Chapter 30

Ticket To Heaven

After work Jiro was eager to go home and try to make up with Selina, but as always his plans were always thrown aside somehow. This time Mod was outside waiting for him. Last night Jiro had forced himself to talk to Mod just to keep her company until 4 in the morning.

“You have panda eyes,” Mod greeted.

“It’s a surprise seeing you here,” Jiro told.

“Sorry, I’m going over the board of being selfish, right?” Mod questioned.

“You must be bored to be here. It’s 3,” Jiro glanced at his watch.

“Yea, figures,” Mod replied as they started to walk down the block. “Walking beats sitting in a car don’t you think? This way it feels like you’re leaving things you want to forget behind you with every step you take.”

Jiro turned to study Mod and asked, “Were you crying?”

Mod smiled and answered calmly, “I’m sorry.”

Jiro stuffed his hands into the pocket of his sweater, “I’ve seen you cry a million times so this time it’s not quite alright. You know why?”

Mod kept her gaze strong on the ground.

“It’s unreasonable for you to keep crying,” Jiro stated.

“Have you seen Selina cry before?” questioned Mod now looking up at him. “You cared when she did right?”

Jiro thought back to all those times he'd seen Selina had shed her tears. Her tears were always for something else which made him wonder if she had shed any tears for him.

“Of course, I cared without knowing it.” Jiro replied and became silent afterward.

Selina stood staring at the door for how long she didn’t know. She hadn’t felt like eating that morning and she had also skipped lunch. Selina glanced down at the time on her cell phone. It was almost 4 now. ‘Why am I waiting? What am I waiting for? I shouldn’t be here. I don’t even need to be standing here.’ Selina thought to herself over and over but still she did not move from her spot.

Suddenly a bunch of memories and thoughts came flooding to her. She and Jiro had come to Taipei in hopes of curing her hearing problem but they hadn’t done anything about it except for visiting a doctor. Selina had already figured that she would lose her hearing anyway meaning that they had already finished what they came to do but why were they still stuck in Taipei? Selina quickly changed the thought to what was she still doing in Taipei. She wasn’t needed anymore and there was nothing else in the city for her.

The ringing of her cell phone awoke her from her thoughts.

“Selina you doing anything right now?” it was Danson.

“No,” Selina replied.

“Care to keep me company tonight? I’m going to the night market,” Danson told.

Minutes later Selina found herself stepping out of the house and getting into Danson’s car. She couldn’t help but feel as if she was in a daze.

“You seemed pretty bored today,” Danson told then glanced at Selina who had her head down with her hair covering both sides of her face. “Are you feeling ok?”

Selina nodded but thought ‘I wish I was ok.’

Within the next hour Selina found herself following Danson who was trying to create a successful conversation but Selina could not catch on to what he was saying. Again her hearing would die out here and there and she would have to reply randomly back to Danson because she hadn’t spoken to him about her problem yet.

“Selina?” Danson asked worriedly.

“Selina!” a voice interrupted.

Selina and Danson both turned to see Aaron running toward them.

“Hey,” Danson greeted as Aaron stopped by them.

“I was eating my meal over there when I saw you two. Do you want to join me?” questioned Aaron.

“Sure why not?” Selina replied with a smile.

At the table Selina found herself eating a bowl of noodle after another. After drinking a whole cup of water and feeling better Selina took a long breath and turned to see that Danson and Aaron were watching her with amazement.

Selina let out a small laugh, “I hadn’t had a meal all day.”

“Why not?” questioned Danson.

“You were home all day weren’t you?” Aaron asked.

“It’s nothing much. I feel so much better,” Selina said stretching her arms out in the air. “So what are you doing here Aaron?”

Aaron drew up his smile, “I was hungry.”

“Don’t you eat at Wu Chun’s?” questioned Selina.

“Oh yea, I do once in a while but his food is so boring,” Aaron complained. “So I hang out here most of the time. Anyway you’re Danson right?”

“That's right,” Danson replied. “You were with Wu Chun the other time.”

“Yup that’s me!” Aaron hurriedly pointed to himself as if proud. “Anyway, Wu Chun told me about that one argument. You don’t seem like a bad guy to me I have to admit Chun is so stuck up sometimes.”

Danson and Selina exchanged glances and gave a short laugh.

Mod and Jiro had just stepped into the area of the night market. Mod glanced around somewhat surprised that Jiro chose this as a place to help cheer her up. She gazed up at Jiro who seemed to be looking around.

“Why did you bring me here?” questioned Mod.

Jiro turned back to her as if he had forgotten her for a short second.

He gave a small laugh, “Selina enjoys this place so I thought it’d help make you happy. They have a lot of interesting stuff here.”

Mod pressed her lips as she glanced around sighing as they walked on. They stopped to get something to eat at a noodle stall and after doing so Jiro led her around to stalls where some people sold handmade jewelry and so on. As usual nothing caught her eye or interested her. Jiro stopped at another stall for a short while and they continued walking on. Mod kept glancing around and moved her gaze as she recognized someone who looked like Danson. Mod watched him walk pass and couldn’t help but want to run over and throw her arms around him.

“Danson!” Mod shouted loudly causing Jiro to turn and follow her gaze.

Danson stopped shortly and turned around trying to see who had screamed his name. Noticing that Danson wasn’t with them Aaron and Selina stopped and turned around. Suddenly through a crowd of people a girl came running and stopped just before Danson.

She had a desperate expression on her face and was breathing heavily for air. Right away Selina recognized her.

“Danson…” Mod began.

Selina moved her gaze up as she noticed Jiro coming to stand aside with Mod. Jiro also turned his gaze to Selina and quickly glanced at Aaron who looked back curiously.

“It’s really you,” Mod said.

Danson did not reply and quickly Aaron felt as if he shouldn’t be standing there with them. He knew that Jiro and Selina had not yet patched up but he was confused about this Danson person and Mod. What did they have going on between them?

“Of course it’s me,” Danson told. “Selina and I.”
