PROLOGUE

It rains a lot nowadays. The city used to be so beautiful, so full of life. But what happened? The sky used to be blue, the air used to be sweet and the people used to smile. But now; the clouds never seem to disappear, the air grew stale with the rain and people’s eyes are cold.

But maybe it’s just me.

‘You’re worthless.’

That would make sense. It’s my fault; it always was.

‘A mistake.’

The rain follows me, wherever I go. It’s my fault that it rains.

‘No-one wants you.’

I see it now; the people don’t smile because of me. They don’t smile anymore because I disappoint them. They were happy, before I came along.

‘You should disappear.’

It would be so easy. The sky is black now; I think there’s a storm coming, and that means everyone will be rushing home. Back to the warmth of their families. There they go, huddling into coats and under umbrellas as the wind and rain pick up.

 I doubt anyone would even notice.

 ‘You’re a disgrace. Why do you even exist?’

Lightning flashes across the sky and the rumbling of thunder crashes against the noise of the city. The rain thrashes and streams down on me. The wind whips against my cheeks.

What do I have left?

Nothing.

Who would miss me?

No-one.

Another crash of thunder. Another flash of lightning. The world is telling me to end it, and this time I’ll listen. I stumble forward, to the edge. The sky is dark as I look up, and the rain stings my eyes. The wind is harsh, it’s pushing me forward.

Here I am. Looking down into the river; inviting me. The flow of the water is hypnotizing as I look down. Nothing left to stop me.

I close my eyes.

I fall.

Soon, nothing but darkness remains. The world is gone, a better place without me. I can rest now and be peaceful; the water is cold and the blackness envelops me, pulling me down.

They were right; they always were. Maybe when I’m gone the rain will stop?

Maybe I can be happy now, for once.

I smile as the weight of the water crushes me; my senses are gone.

Finally, I can let go.

I can die.
