Foreword
PREVIEW:
"Chinese lessons?" My father glanced at me over the top of the newspaper he had been reading before I barged into his office unannounced. I nodded, determination showing clearly on my face. "What on earth would you ever use Chinese for?" I opened and closed my mouth a couple of times, not really sure how to respond in a way that would make him actually agree to my proposition. After a while he sighed. "Is this going to be like all those other projects, Oh Sehun? Like when you wanted me to pay for guitar lessons or art class or basketball?"
"I promise I'm not going to give up this time." He narrowed his eyes suspiciously. I decided to pull out all the stops. Clasping my hands in front of myself, making my eyes wetter and jutting out my bottom lip I probably looked all kinds of pathetic. I was just one step short of getting on my knees to beg. "Please, dad. I'll never ask for anything ever again." We both knew that was a lie.
The longer I looked at him with my pleading gaze, the more I saw his resolve crumble bit by bit. Eventually he let out an huff and fixed his gaze on the newspaper again. "I'll think about it," he said and I knew that it would be best if I didn't press him more. If I did he would most likely balk and tell me I could forget all about learning Chinese.
"Thank you, dad," I muttered. Then I left his office.
The next day when I came home from school there was a Chinese language tape and a small Korean to Chinese dictionary on my bed.
