Chapter Two

Taming The She-Devil [HIATUS/REVAMPING]

Hyunsoo

“I get it, Hyukjae. Okay, alright!” Hyunsoo said for the fifth time. She gave Donghae a pleading look; hoping for some help to make the monstrous arms around her waist to stop crushing her poor back.

Oh who is she kidding…this is Hyukjae we’re talking, and Donghae enjoys the sight of her getting tortured.

“DON’T EVER DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT AGAIN,” Hyukjae yelled into her ears before giving her one final spine-crushing hug before finally giving her the freedom to breathe, and apparently to repent on her wrong doings as well.

A knock came on the door, and she saw a familiar pink bunny ears slipping in between the door. Hyunsoo couldn’t help but smile. “Sungmin oppa, I know it’s you.”

The bearer of the furry ears stepped in with a basket filled with pink goodies, and Donghae and Hyunsoo both cringed at the sight. The two of the just detest the colour pink.

“I think I’m blind,” she sarcastically commented.

“You’re very much welcome, Hyunsoo,” Sungmin said with the same amount of sarcasm, placing the basket next to her. She rolled her eyes and took Hyukjae's leather jacket and covered the effeminate gift, making a face as she hung the jacket over it.

Sungmin shrugged his shoulders and leaned against the window, a habit of his that Hyunsoo had noticed even back in his high school years. “By the way Hyunsoo, I think I ran into your friends while I was on my way here,”

The door was opened again but no one came in, instead they heard low whispering noises from outside, and something like a few people struggling to make their way through the door.

“Let me go through first!” a voice said, and that seemed to have stop the low chattering immediately, before a blond female strutted her way into the room.

“Oh god,” Hyukjae sighed immediately when Jessica strutted her way through and ruffled his and Donghae's hair, “Who the hell invited you?”

Jessica smiled and flipped her long locks to his face. “I have my connections, duh.” She said and looked straight at the girl sitting on the bed in front of her. “So how are you feeling?”

“A bit stiff, but I'll survive,” Hyunsoo replied, and the pretty blond started checking her medical report, her lips pursing as she flipped through the pages, looking unimpressed. Hyukjae scoffed, knowing that Jessica was only bluffing. He knew her well enough to know that she was just trying to show off the fact that she knows just what the report says, even though she doesn’t even have a clue.

Hyukjae looked at Donghae, who seemed to have raised the white flag the moment she stepped into the room. Sungmin, on the other hand; looked amused and as if he’s enjoying the fact that Hyukjae's annoyed by Jessica’s presence.

Her brother, (or to be more precise, half-brother) Hyukjae; Donghae, Sungmin along with Jessica had spent their senior year together in high school, the same one that Hyunsoo is attending now. Though Hyunsoo herself doesn’t fully understand the history behind their friendship - she was once told that Donghae and Hyukjae used to be mortal enemies, and Donghae used to date Jessica.

And now it seems for some strange reason, Hyukjae and Jessica are the mortal enemies and Donghae and he are dating. The only thing that remained the same even after those years was that Sungmin was Hyukjae's best friend, all the way from middle school until now.

Putting that aside, Hyunsoo was well aware that her brother is the kind of person that people would commonly consider as gay, although Hyunsoo sees the term gay as how it isclearly stated in an English dictionary- happiness even thought the term was deemed ‘old fashioned’. But that’s how it is when Hyukjae’s with Donghae. He’s happy.

He’s happy being what he is, and there’s nothing old fashioned when you’re in love with your other half. Although there were times where she thought the couple was extremely cheesy up to the point where she thinks she might drown in a sea of cheddar.

They even call themselves the ‘Eunhae couple’. Yes, they are that cheesy.

            “Oww, that hurts!”

“Tiffany, you’re stepping on my foot!”

“Yuri, why are we even hiding?”

Sungmin walked towards the door and opened it, quirking an eyebrow at the three high school girls hiding behind it.

“I was wondering the same thing, why not just come in?” he said with a chuckle. The three girls gulped and straightened themselves out and nodded sheepishly at the cute pink lover before them.

Sungmin never fails to impress with his looks, as always. In fact, if Hyunsoo could say so without feeling the urge to throw up, even Hyukjae and Donghae have the same quality when it comes to appearance.

Finally able to straighten herself out, Yuri walked ahead of them, trying to look professional and bowed before Hyunsoo, being that she is her Secretary in the Council. The tall Sooyoung followed her from behind with the ever-so-delicate Tiffany trailing behind her, repeating the same action.

“It’s good to see you’ve regained consciousness President,” the three of them chorused.

“And it’s good to see you guys have practiced your welcoming greeting and entrance too,” Hyunsoo commented, “Oh come on, guys. Drop the formal already. I’ve been away from my post for the past…”

Hyunsoo looked at Hyukjae, who also seemed to have realized that she hasn’t got a single clue just how long had she been hospitalized. “Six months,” Hyukjae assisted.

“Right,” Hyunsoo said, glad that there was someone who gave her the answer, “…for the past six months,”

Silence overwhelmed the entire room before realization finally hit her; and when it did, Hyunsoo's eyes were wide as saucers before she screamed hysterically, “SIX MONTHS? I HAVE BEEN IN THIS DAMN PLACE FOR SIX ING MONTHS?”

Hyukjae and Donghae tried their very best to stop the rage that might tear the entire room down and finally, after a few minutes she managed to calm down, though only a little bit. Heaving deep breaths Hyunsoo turned to look at her schoolmates, all trembling out of fear at their friend’s sudden outburst.

“What did the Principal say?” she asked; or to be more precise, demanded.

“Nothing, he said nothing,” the tall Sooyoung bravely spoke. She had always been the bold one, despite her quiet nature.

They all took a breath of relief when they see Hyunsoo letting her head fall back and land on the soft white pillow, clearly aware that their President had finally calmed herself down.

They all knew just how serious Hyunsoo is with her duties as the Student Council President, being that she practically worked her off in her freshman year to reach for the top, earning her the title as the President; in just one year.

She became the first in everything, in academics, sports; you name it. Hyunsoo has her name written in first place for all. How else would she land the spot as a Student Council President in just her first year of high school?

While teachers would consider her as a genius, seniors call her the little she-devil. It’s not that her seniors hate her or anything, just that the girl really is a she-devil. Just one look at her, nobody would thought that such an adorable little girl is able to knock down a boy twice her size all on her own- with just one move.

With her presence, bullies and thugs in that school were no longer a problem. For the first time in the school records, there weren’t any reported cases of student offence for the whole month. Hyunsoo kept everything under control.

            Well, not anymore.

Six months. She’s been out cold for six ing months. The school might as well turn into a war zone knowing that she’s not around to keep things under control. Or worse, a freaking cemetery; but no one’s dead yet, right? She nervously thought.

Thinking about it made Hyunsoo groan out loud, messing up her already messed up hair. “How bad is it?” she finally asked, half hoping that there’s at least fivecases involving the police. She wouldn’t need to ask just how many kids were sent to the hospital, it’ll be rather rhetorical to ask anyway. Basically because she was one of the contributors to the local hospitals patient’s list back then.

“Everything’s fine,” Tiffany squeaked. “We kept everything under control, well not everything…”

Hyunsoo looked at her Vice Secretary, and then to Sooyoung, the head of the Discipline Bureau and finally to Yuri, actually has no post in the Student Council; and yet she’s very efficient as Hyunsoo's assistant so she was often around in their Council room, serving as her secretary.

“So, how bad is it?” Hyunsoo repeated her question, this time, sounding more demanding. “I mean, no police reports? Expulsion? Hospital admittance?”

Hyukjae sensed the tension building up in the room and quickly intruded the short Council report by dragging their three young guests away from his sister. “You, young lady; need to rest and relax for as long as I think you need, before even thinking of going into the school matters,” he warned as he offered her friends some refreshments.

Hyunsoo sighed and let out a small smile. “Good to see you guys, by the way,” she said, referring to her friends. And she began regretting it soon enough as she finds herself almost crushed in Tiffany’s arms.

“I missed you sooo much!” Tiffany said, almost crying as she kept her arms tight around Hyunsoo's thin frame.

            “Fanny-ah, I c-can't b-breathe…”

“Sorry…” she said apologetically. “But it’s hard without you around, with all the boys picking on me,” Tiffany pouted, which Sooyoung and Yuri rolled their eyes to.

“It’s like kindergarten when she’s around. I'm telling you Fanny, you’re just too cute and delicate. Boys just love to tease you,” Sooyoung pointed out.

Hyunsoo laughed and patted Tiffany’s head gently, “I’ll get to that once I'm back okay?” she said, “I miss whacking those boys in the head anyway,”

“Well be prepared to meet all the new faces,” Yuri added. “Parents demanded for their child to leave the school after the fire incident, so we had to deal with new students coming in for every class. Oh, and uh…there’s only like, twenty percent of girls in the student body now,”

“T-twenty?” Hyunsoo gulped while the other three nodded. “And the rest are all…boys?”

Sooyoung patted her shoulder, sensing the burden that’s beginning to pile up on her shoulder. “I know, we’re suffering just as much,” she said and Hyunsoo sighed out loud. “But like we said earlier, things were pretty much under control,”

“How is that so?” Hyunsoo retorted.

Donghae cleared his throat, “Council matters are to be discussed in school, wasn’t it?” he pointed out with a smile, tilting his head at Hyukjae's direction.

Hyunsoo rolled her eyes and turned to look at her brother who’s spending his time bickering with Jessica on what it seemed to be about Hyunsoo's diet once she returns home. “Fine, Donghae. Just don’t tell him, alright?”

The older male smiled and went off to meddle with Hyukjae and Jessica’s never-ending bickering.

“Donghae oppa can be really sweet, can he?” Tiffany commented, looking at Donghae who is now wrapping his arm around his boyfriend’s waist.

“I still can't believe he’s gay for your brother, Hyunsoo,” Sooyoung said, chuckling as she started untangling Hyunsoo's hair ends.

Hyunsoo snorted and shook her head. “I can't believe my brother’s gay for him,”

“Either way, it’s a shame that those are together; yet it’s kind of cute too,” Yuri said and sighed. “Sungmin oppa is not yet taken, right?”

            “Yuri!”

The four of them started laughing when Yuri began pointing out all the good qualities that she sees in Sungmin while Hyunsoo tries her hardest to convince Yuri otherwise. Just at the peak of their girly arguments, two doctors in their white coat came in to do a full check up on Hyunsoo's condition.

The male doctor who seemed to have more authority than the female one beamed at Hyunsoo as he started reading through her report. Hyunsoo stared at the man, for some reason he looked very, very familiar…

“Daddy!” Jessica exclaimed happily and immediately wrapped her arms around the doctor’s arm.

“Jessica, my darling; I didn’t know you were here. I would’ve scheduled a late brunch with you if you told me,” the Dr. Jung said, and Hyunsoo couldn’t help but notice how much he resembled Jessica in so many ways and how she didn’t even notice that in the first place. Six months in a hospital bed does things to you apparently.

“It’s alright, daddy. I want to hang around with my friends so that’s why I didn’t ring you. You were busy anyway,” she replied with a pout.

Dr. Jung chuckled, though he did seem a bit hurt, in an unnecessary dramatic way, (Being that he’s Jessica’s father, Hyunsoo can guess where she got her dramatic trait) before he announced to the his patients visitors to leave so she could do her check up.

“Before we begin I’d like to introduce you to my assistant, Dr Chen. She’ll be helping with the check up as well.”

Hyunsoo nodded and smiled at the lanky lady standing next to him, who seemed like she couldn’t wait to do all the tests on Hyunsoo; as if she’s a guinea pig.

At the end of the test both doctors seemed to be impressed with Hyunsoo's fast recovery and told her that she’ll be discharged tomorrow.

“Well, I guess that’s all for today. Although, I’d like to ask you something Hyunsoo” Dr Jung said, his eyes glinting with amusement.

            “Sure,”

“Just why did you go back into the fire and how in the world did you manage to get out of it without suffering any severe burns?” he asked.

Hyunsoo stared at the doctor. For a few seconds she left the two doctors staring back at her, with the well-tell-us-what-happened look on their faces.

“I’m sorry, but I did what?”

Dr Jung didn’t hide his surprised expression by her respond and flipped his medical record. “Well, it says here in my report that you were hospitalized after throwing yourself back into a blazing fire that occurred in your school, while saving some of the trapped students,”

Fire…Yuri mentioned something about a fire just now. Something about parents making their children stop coming to school because of a fire incident. But Hyunsoo can't remember any of it.

“Err, doctor I think you’re mistaken. I…” and then Hyunsoo thought about how she ended up in a hospital. Nothing.’ “…I don’t remember anything about a fire incident,”

The two doctors exchanged a glances and Hyunsoo couldn’t help but think that this can't be good for her.

“We should call the others back in. I need to speak to them,”

Key

             “!”

            “Excuse me?”

Key cleared his throat when he realized he cursed a bit too loud that the nurse who sitting by the counter had heard him.  She was giving him a disapproving look, and so Key pretended to look at his watch, and then the bouquet of flowers and even tied his already-tied shoe laces before finally looking back to the nurse, who was still staring at him with that same look in her eyes.

“What, you’ve never heard anyone curse before? Give me a break,” he shot back with a glare. The nurse seemed unfazed by his snappy comeback and continued to give him the same look.

After a few seconds Key sighed, “Fine…” he muttered.

He looked around to check if anyone is walking down the corridor before looking back into the nurse’s eyes. “Sorry…” With an awkward smile plastered on his face he went into the elevator, pressing the ‘rooftop’ button.

“Darn nurse with her manner issues. When will she leave this place anyway?” Key complained, waiting for the elevator to reach the roof. “And she saw me too…damn.”

“I'm afraid the patient is suffering from a slight amnesia,”

“Amnesia?” he heard her brother say. He sounded tensed, and Key could guess what kind of atmosphere was hovering in that VIP room.

“But doctor, the tests says she didn’t suffer from any head injury,” it was probably her brother’s partner speaking now. Key had scrunched himself further down so that he could remain hidden behind the door while listening to the conversation.

He waited for the patient herself to speak up, but he could only hear her brother and the doctor’s voice. “Well it’s nothing severe. And she would probably recover her memories sooner or later. We asked her a few questions about herself and she seems to be remembering things fine,”

“Then why did you say I have amnesia? Because I forgot one fire incident?” finally she spoke, but a long, uncomfortable silence followed soon after.

“Hyunsoo-yah, it’s because of the fire that you’re here,” a female voice replied, and Key could guess that its one of her school friends.

“I…what?” Hyunsoo asked once more. “But I remember nothing about…a fire…”

“It’s alright baby. I think its better that you don’t. It wasn’t really a pretty sight,”

“Yah, Lee Hyukjae, what did I say about calling me baby? And get your hands off me!”

When Key realized that the palm of his right hand was beginning to hurt, he quickly made his way down the corridor and disappeared.

“ it all,” Key said once more, slightly softer than before (just in case somebody was around) as he sat down and leaned against the wall. He stared at his right hand which he clenched a bit too tight while listening to the news that his nails dug into it, causing his palm to bleed.

“What am I doing here?” he asked, staring at the bouquet of lilies he bought this morning. He took out his cell phone and turned it back on, checking his call log (which was filled with either Jonghyun’s, Minho’s or Onew’s name- but mostly Jonghyun) when it rang once more.

Key clicked his tongue at the caller ID and answered the call with a grunt.

“Why aren't you in school?” his father’s cold voice pierced through the speakers.

“What’s it to you?” he answered back, just as coolly.

He heard his father heave a sigh, before continuing with a stern voice “Kim Kibum, even if you are skipping your classes I don’t want you lurking around in my hospital with that brutal demeanour of yours. This is a hospital, so I demand you to get out and never come back unless it’s necessary,”

Key cut the line the moment his father had finished speaking, and stuffed his cell phone back into his pocket, cursing under his breath. “What makes him think I'm staying here anyway, ing old bastard,” Key hissed.

“I thought I heard someone from back here,”

The boy looked up to meet the voice’s owner, with the intention to glare at the person for interrupting his alone-time. Privacy really does mean nothing to people these days. He paused when his gaze met the beaming face of his ‘acquaintance’, her perfect white teeth grazing her bottom lip as she smiled at him.
