Chapter Three

Taming The She-Devil [HIATUS/REVAMPING]

The She-devil, the Almighty and the Dragon

Key (Kim Kibum)

Note to self; never come for a visit at the hospital wearing your school uniform. It does not, I REPEAT, it does not make you seem like you’re working hard in school, unless it’s the weekends.

If it wasn’t for the fact that he’s been scared less at the moment, Key wouldn’t have had fought the strongest urge to curse out loud at the moment of this unexpected encounter.

“You’re from Downtown Seoul aren't you?” the girl asked him.

Key nodded, something even he himself never expected to happen, but then he figured it was no use to lie anyway. He’s talking to the student council President of his school.

Even if he did skip a few codes regarding the school uniform (the white dress shirt that goes with the blazer, tie, name tag, and he added a few stitches and chains including buttons – okay, it wasn’t a few. But he looked stylish) people could still tell which school’s uniform he was wearing.

“You must be a first year then, hi!” she said cheerfully, extending her hand out to him. “I’m from D.S. Academy too; though I'm in my second year,”

Key stared at her hand, and he’s pretty sure his expression was probably showing off whatever kind of feelings he’s having at the moment because she pulled her hand back when she realized that Key wasn’t really a hand-shake person.

I know who you are, so why not just spill the beans and tell me you’re going to punish me for skipping school. Jeez, does she realize her smile is god-awful creepy?

“Is your family here? Because I know this is still school-hours,”

So she really did get to the point.

Key wagered whether his President could read minds. He’s heard about her being a she-devil, of course his friends and him always did laugh it off. But right now he’s starting to believe the rumours the second year seniors are telling him. But they looked as if they were joking at the moment, trying to scare off their little freshmen.

Damn wipe that smile off your face would you?

To Key’s horror her smile really did fade, and she even squinted her eyes suspiciously at him, as if she’s trying to the truth out of him just with her eyes.  “You’re not skipping school are you?”

“N-no,” he lied, to his surprise.

“Good, mind going for a walk with me?” she beamed, extending her hand once more and wrapped it around his arm.

Without being able to respond to his senior Key was dragged into the elevator and eventually out of the hospital against his will, and the next thing he knew he was already by the side walk with his strange and scary senior holding onto his arm.

“Umm, where are we going?” Key finally managed to utter, trying to make his efforts in freeing his arm unnoticeable.

Hyunsoo immediately let go of his arm and started walking ahead of him, stretching her arms and breathing in a fresh breath of air as if she didn’t just drag a complete stranger out with her.

Key couldn’t think of anything better to do so he stared at her back in utter disbelief, realizing that he was ignored and well, abandoned.

And nobody, she-devil president or not, can ignore the Almighty Key.

“Hey lady!” he screamed. “Just what the do you think you’re doing? You can't walk out of the hospital just like that!”

Hyunsoo stopped and spun around; her arms folded in front of her chest.

“So?” She muttered, glaring back at him. “I just did, didn’t I? So why don’t you quit making a scene and walk with me,”

Key stared at her with his mouth hanging open. What the hell was that?

One moment she was smiling and beaming sunshine from her face and the next thing he knew she was glaring daggers at him. If looks really could kill, Key would probably be dead by now if wasn’t for the fact that he was quick enough to advert his gaze elsewhere by rolling his eyes.

“Come on, I haven’t got all day!”

“What have I gotten myself into?” reluctantly, Key had found himself walking side-by-side with Hyunsoo, despite the awkward silence that followed. People were starting to give the two of them strange looks, though Hyunsoo seemed to be too preoccupied with everything else around her that she didn’t even notice the suspicious looks she’s getting much with the clothes that she’s wearing.

And Key feels like he’s kidnapping her. Or at least that’s what those staring eyes are telling him.

“Where are we going?” he blurted, scratching the non-existent itch on the back of his head. This is awkward.

“Dunno,” she replied, walking ahead of him then stopping in front of a deserted park. “This place used to be packed with kids,” she muttered, and Key looked at her.

She seemed to be disappointed, but then she advances to the swings and sat down; kicking her feet into the dirt to move the swing. Key just stared at her, sort of dumbfounded by the strangeness of her behaviour. He wondered if she really is okay, and by okay he meant mentally.

She’s not traumatized by the fire is she?

            “Sorry,”

Key’s head shot up to stare at Hyunsoo; she was smiling to him now, a real smile, no creepiness whatsoever and Key found himself gaping at her after muttering a soft “What?”

Hyunsoo pushed herself on the swing some more, looking up to the blinding afternoon sun. “I’m sorry, dragging you out here and all,” she said, chuckling lightly. “My room was getting rather noisy, Heechul-oppa came and decided to throw a party since I’ve finally woke up- not that I’m complaining or anything, but I’d rather stay away from my drunk brother,”

Key didn’t say anything, though deep inside he’s thinking that his father would seriously not tolerate the fact that the visitors are having a celebratory party with booze included, and hell the patient who’s supposed to be celebrated are not even there, what are these people thinking?

“You can go if you want; I can find my way back. In fact I was only using you to get pass the nurse,” she said, laughing. “Sorry, again,”

“T-that’s okay,” Key replied softly, and he saw her face lit up at his statement.

What am I saying?

“I mean, I was hoping to go for a walk too, so... uh, I suppose I don't mind,” he added.

You have gone mad Kim Kibum, mad.

“Thank you!” she beamed, and even reaching out to grab his hands and squeezed it lightly, rendering the younger one speechless at the touch of her warm hands. Key was too shocked to react at first, but then he realized that he was being way too passive this whole time, and he knows letting a girl boss him around like that is not cool.

He pulled his hands out of her grasp and sat down on the swing next to her, which Hyunsoo followed suit by pushing herself on the swing again. “I’ve been out cold for the past six months, so I’m dying to get a little bit of fresh air,”

            “Yeah, I know...”

            “You know?”

Key cursed himself again for letting those words slip out his mouth and face-palmed himself only to groan out loud when a bouquet of lilies was stuffed on his face.

Oh . The flowers...

“How come you carried the flowers all the way out here anyway?”

“I'm supposed to get rid of them,”

“You want to throw them away?”

            “Yeah,”

            “Wasteful bastard,”

Key turned his head and glared at her, and she glared back.

“Well what am I supposed to do with it when the person I'm supposed to give it to doesn't need it anymore?” Key said in defence, though his tone showed a hint of annoyance for being called a ‘wasteful bastard’.

“What do you mean, doesn't need it anymore?” Hyunsoo asked.

            “Forget I said anything,”

Hyunsoo went quiet, and Key was about to thank the Gods for shutting her up before he heard rustling noises from behind his back and a giant (almost the size of an adult goat, if he could be more precise) dog jumped above both their heads and ran  towards the road across the playground.

“What the was that?” Key shot his head up and stared at the dog, which stopped in the middle of the road and turned his head to look at the ‘hurdles’ that it got over just now- which of obviously his head.

“That mongrel better get run down by a truck soon,” the boy hissed, running his fingers over his red-streaked fringe.

            “Kid, look out!”

Hyunsoo disappeared from his side; and he realizes that for once since this morning, his prayers was answered- well almost, only now Key seriously wants to cuss at the Gods for actually granting his wishes when a little boy came running from the other side of the road and hugged what seems to be his precious pet, and a truck decides to dandily honking its way toward the boy.

            “Wait Hyunsoo, you’re not supp-”

The truck went past. And Key screamed.

This can't happen. This can't happen again. She can't be de-

            “Are you okay little boy?”

Key’s eyes snapped open to see the older girl hugging the goat-dog wait no, the goat-dog her face clean of dirt.

“I thought you wanted to save the little boy?”Despite the relief he felt, Key had to ask with that obvious tone and Hyunsoo only responded with a confused look.

A sound of a throat being cleared is heard, and Key finally noticed that there was someone standing on the other side of the road. Hyunsoo stood up and look at the direction Key was looking at as well, and Key thinks even she was somewhat...amazed by his presence.

Note here that Key isn’t really the type who is easily impressed or amazed, and something tells him it’s the same for Hyunsoo too. But they were seriously ogling at this guy now, who might even me just a few years older than Key himself.

He wore a black hoodie and a bored, yet menacing look on his face, as if appearing out of thin air and grabbing a kid by his waist- the poor boy was in fact; dangling helplessly at the side of his body in one arm (and yet Key couldn’t help but feel that the kid is enjoying himself) was something that he does every day.

A silver chain necklace with a pendant the shape of a dragon was hanging freely around his neck.

            This guy seems really familiar.

“Might as well just sit there and watch me save the too,”

“The dog’s a male,” Hyunsoo said, letting the canine go as it made its way to its owner.

The kid who was clearly oblivious of the tense atmosphere around him simply cheered as he hugged his dog before chirpily thanking his hooded stranger and ran off.

“Whatever, but if you’re ever going to save anyone next time, it’s a good thing to aim first,” he simply muttered and turned around.

Key swore he heard the stranger whisper a soft ‘stupid’ before leaving, and then Hyunsoo scoffed next to him.

“Men,” she said, before turning to Key and told him that they should get back to the hospital.

“I need to get this cut on my knee fixed or else my brother would freak,” she added, and Key’s eyes went down to her knee and what-the--that-is-not-a-cut look struck his face immediately.

“The blood says otherwise though,” Key pointed out, watching the blood ooze from her knee and down to her foot.

She waved her hand and started walking and only God knows how amazed Key was when she didn’t even flinch nor did she limp as she walked.  “I’ve had worse, so this is practically nothing,”

Key simply shrugged the comment off, but he still couldn’t help but wonder just what kind of ‘worse’ events that happened to her that made her consider an injury like that as nothing- he could see her flesh, it’s like her knew was practically ripped apart.

I suppose she really is a she-devil, as they all would say.
