Chapter 5 Last Chapter

The night sky of the spring, how many moments have the cherry blossoms witnessed so far? The joyful times painted with smiles and laughter, the gloomy days drenched in tears and cries, how many more moments and times have these cherry blossoms have to witness? How many more loses and gains does it have to see? How many more successes and fails does it have to watch over from above everyone? But, life keeps on moving forward and perhaps this night and many more nights to come shall forever see all these emotions that are being unfolded by the inevitable happenings in everyone’s life.

As dark as the starless night sky is the last night of this mournful loss of a love one, a person loved and cherished by everyone. The clouds partly cover above just like this night when everyone’s in black and gloom. As gloomy as the deep night can be are the downhearted friends and family that come and go inside the funeral home where there lies the body of someone dear to them. As special as the flowers surrounding the coffin is the person wearing her beautiful white dress who seems to look like sleeping only inside it, peacefully forever.

“Jennie is one of the kindest and most humble people I’ve ever known. She’s very patient in everything she does and she may look so cold but if you look and know her better, she’s the softest and sweetest person too.” Jisoo, being one of the late Jennie’s long-time friends said in her speech as people closely listen, from known personalities to family members.

Arriving on that same time the speech on-going is Chaeyoung in her all black dress, neatly combed dangling blonde hair long enough to cover her tired swollen eyes. Her hand still trembles as she signs the guest book for she has been sleepless since that very day she last saw Jennie smiled. She’s evidently crumbly that some eyes of the visitors listening to the speech would twist their heads towards her as she occupies a seat from the corner to join the eulogy.

“I thought you won’t come anymore.” Lisa, who happened to be Chaeyoung’s seatmate in the corner said, almost looking as tired and as stressful as Chaeyoung is.

Chaeyoung sighs, massaging her aching forehead, “I have to. It’s the last night after all. Have you been coming since the first day here?”

“Yeah. It’s the last time I’ll see her anyway. I even had to do a speech earlier. It was harder than I thought it would be.” Lisa grimaced.

“I see…” Chaeyoung replied short and went back lowering down her head covered by her hair.

The speech goes on, and Jisoo reminisces more of Jennie’s life, “Jennie has a lot of friends, boys and girls, popular or not, she isn’t picky and she never failed to make us happy and she makes sure we’re happy all the time. That’s why, her passing and this lost breaks us so much. Her smile, we won’t see it anymore. Her presence is such a great lost for us. She was a very kind person, an angel for us but why does she have to be taken away from us and wasn’t given a longer chance to live…?”

Both Chaeyoung and Lisa intently listened to every single word of Jisoo’s words and probably like most of the visitors who are present in the place, recalled all these traits of Jennie. But for the two who love her dearly in their heart, the same certain piece of memory flashed before their minds when it comes to Jennie’s best traits she showed them to make a bad day turn good.

“Hey! Lisa! Chaeyoung! I’ve been looking for you guys everywhere!” Jennie came dashing as she found two women at the university building’s rooftop, curled and leaned by the fences, Lisa crying a river while Chaeyoung spacing out staring at an empty space. And as she joins them under the sun’s heat, she worriedly talks to them, “I heard what happened…”

“I failed… we failed our subject…” Chaeyoung grumbled and avoided Jennie’s concerned looks.

But Lisa sobbed onto Jennie’s chest, “Jennie! What should I do? Our professor said I have to repeat the subject next semester!”

“Is it the same with you Chaeyoung?” Jennie asked the isolated one and nodded. “I see. So both of you, huh?”

Jennie kept zipped momentarily as she sits in between them, pulled their heads to rest on her petite shoulders and she let herself absorb all their sadness eating them out. She hums a song for them, almost like a lullaby, soothing their souls, calming their anxieties and later Lisa’s cries stopped and enjoyed her presence with them, while Chaeyoung couldn’t help but to smirk and hide her blushing face under her hair.

As soon as Jennie heard no more cries and all is in silence, she tells for encouragement, “You know, I also failed one of my subjects when I was on the same year as you guys…”

“Really unnie?” Chaeyoung looked up in shock.

While Lisa recalls, “Oh yeah, you told me once about it.”

“I was also crying back then. I couldn’t tell my parents immediately because I was so scared to be scolded. But you know, what I learned that time was to look for something good in every bad situation. I was indeed scolded because I didn’t properly study and I do admit I didn’t but I used it as a motivation not to slack off on my next try because you see, I’m not coming from scratch but I’m coming from an experience I don’t want to happen again. Having a detour in life is not a bad thing after all. In fact it will make you stronger for better future.” Jennie guided whole-heartedly as she patted their heads.

“You’re really amazing unnie.” Chaeyoung acknowledged as she stood up to stretch. “I feel a lot better with your words. No wonder why you’re being looked up by a lot of freshmen around here because you’re really an angel.” She then praised.

“I’m not really that good either. Sometimes I can’t even follow my own advises too.” Jennie giggled then looks over at Lisa who stayed clinging to her and asks, “How about you Lisa, did you understand what I was trying to say? Do you feel better now? Or do you still down?”

“Well, I’m really not sure…” The dumbfounded Lisa pouted.

“I guess the two of you need some ice cream then!” Jennie announced as she stood up, walking ahead in front of the two and waves at them, “C’mon! Let’s go quickly grab some ice cream! It’s my treat! Don’t worry! You guys need it to cool down and relax!”

“Just in time, I’m craving for it.” Chaeyoung smirked and jogged beside Jennie.

And Lisa caught up with them and proudly says, “As expected from my one and only best girlfriend!”

This happy memory from their college days ended, those young days of them when there’s nothing to worry about but their grades, their young love and their rare times together after classes. Thanks to Jisoo’s speech, such important memory was recollected into their thoughts, Lisa realizing she never actually followed Jennie’s advises while Chaeyoung kept it tattooed in her mind making her this brave and successful. This memory was so sweet to remember at first but as they look over what’s in front of them, a coffin where their light is in, it turned so bitter that they cannot keep their tears for themselves anymore.

“And oh…!” Jisoo halted from her speech upon the notice of Chaeyoung’s attendance at the corner then she proceeds, “There’s someone in here that I believe who can tell us more about Jennie, someone I believe who knows her the best amongst everyone. She’s Jennie’s hero who doesn’t wear cape, the best of all the bests and even I am sure about it. She knows all of Jennie’s ups and downs especially during Jennie’s last moments in life.”

Jisoo darted her eyes onto Chaeyoung who was startled upon seeing the gesture for her to stand up, “H-hey… don’t… I don’t want to go there and I don’t know what to say. I didn’t prepare anything.”

But Jisoo went on introducing, “Please let’s welcome Jennie’s one and only warrior, Chaeyoung. It’s your turn.”

The visitors applauded low and all eyes are now on Chaeyoung as they are anticipating for her participation, even Jennie’s parents who eyed on her. She’s initially reluctant to even move from her seat and she can only give the people an awkward and forced smile to satisfy them all. Until Jisoo came approaching her and giving her a hand to stand up, she felt the heavier pressure in her, more when she felt a push from Lisa beside her.

“Chaeng, please. It’s for Jennie. It’s for your love right there waiting for you to talk to her. Don’t you think she will like it if she hears your voice and that you’re beside her?” Jisoo cheered.

“B-but…”

Lisa also encourages, “Do it Chaeyoung. For Jennie… just this once.”

Chaeyoung stared at the coffin one last time before she decided though nervous, “Okay, I will. If it’s for Jennie then I’ll do it. I have no other choice too…”

Chaeyoung made her stand and the few visitors gave her round of applause as she walked towards the microphone, close to the coffin where she saw Jennie, eyes closed, breathless and yes, lifeless. And right at that moment she eyed at her in such a state, she heard her heart cracked as if it’s so hard to breathe that she needed to part her lips. Too painful to look at, Chaeyoung desperately looked away from her and fixated her teary and tired sight to the audience full of anticipation with her own speech.

“W-well… Hi, my name is Chaeyoung.” She nervously started with her hands tightly clasped together and with her eyes that later began uneasily shifting looks everywhere, she went on, “Jennie and I first met during my college freshman days, the very first day of my college to be exact and she was my senior. I am from Australia and it’s so difficult for me to adjust with the new environment and people thought I was just cold. It’s always been so difficult for me to speak up because I was scared to make mistakes. But then, Jennie bravely approached me during an assembly, sat next to me because I was all alone and talked to me freely even though I couldn’t speak properly. But, despite that, no matter how many times I gave her short responses, she was there when I needed help the most and that’s one of the days that I will never forget. Her acts of kindness, her genuine care and her reality, she let me see everything in her when we barely knew each other. And that’s when everything started for us…”

While Chaeyoung reminisces one of the most precious memories she had with Jennie, the happenings and the circumstances during that particular special day snapped in her mind and she couldn’t help but to imagine that day yet again. Everything was so surreal for her, especially knowing for herself what kind of a person she is yet there was Jennie who courageously cracked and smashed the wall she built from the world and people around her.

“Excuse me, is this seat taken?” Jennie tapped Chaeyoung’s shoulder, her who was sitting alone while everyone was with their friends having chitchats waiting for the assembly to formally start.

Chaeyoung hesitantly shakes off her head, “Oh… n-no. It’s vacant.”

“Then I’ll take it. I can’t seem to find my friends so I’m alone too. I hope you don’t mind me joining you here. Or perhaps are you waiting for your friends to join you here? You can tell me so I can go find a new spot, you know.” Jennie said nonstop that it was so hard for Chaeyoung to catch up with her talkativeness.

Chaeyoung again shakes off her head in difficult, “N-no… I’m actually alone too. I uhh… don’t have friends.”

“Really?” Jennie gasped and suddenly she initiated a handshake, “I’m Jennie Kim by the way, second year and let’s be friends!”

“Just like that?” Chaeyoung raised an eyebrow. Then when she saw the disappointment in Jennie’s face as she pouted like a little girl, she utters to correct herself, “I’m s-sorry. I didn’t mean to offend you or anything. It’s just that… I’m socially awkward. I just moved here from Australia and—“

“That’s why we should be friends then! I’ll introduce you to Jisoo-unnie later on too if you don’t mind. Don’t worry, we don’t eat people!” Jennie beamed getting all excited by herself, not letting go of that handshake she initiated.

“S-sure…” Chaeyoung had no choice but to agree, so afraid to make a mistake. “Oh, I’m Chaeyoung by the way… Park Chaeyoung…” She then added with a sloppy smile.

“Chaeng! That’s it, I’ll call you Chaeng. It’s so nice to meet you!” Jennie chuckled then in a quick she jotted down her number and email address and slipped it inside Chaeyoung’s side pocket, hissing, “Here, that’s my contact information. Please do give me a call if ever you need some help or anything around this campus.”

“Uhm… excuse me but… mind if I ask if you’re really like this to everyone you meet for the first time… Jennie-unnie?” Chaeyoung questioned so cautious.

Jennie then marvels, “Now that you say it, not really, not to everyone. It’s like I have radar to know who’s in trouble and I just naturally approach them, just like you. And your blonde hair actually got my attention. Maybe try black next time so you won’t stand out too much around here…”

Chaeyoung got speechless from Jennie’s bubbly attitude, but it was this side of her that got her heart somehow moved for the first time since she moved. And with that she can finally smile comfortably as she found a companion, a friend to guide her, a friend to save her from all the adjustments she’s been struggling on. It was that day that Jennie gave color to Chaeyoung’s once bland world.

How it feels so great to look back at this piece of a very important memory if only Jennie is here with her but sadly, looking back at this first meeting is too painful now that Jennie cannot be there to hold her hand anymore when she’s scared and how heartbreaking it is that the first person who made her believe that no man is an island cannot be with her forever anymore and there she is, sleeping forever.

And Chaeyoung goes on with her speech after an unconscious minute of silence from her, beginning to get drowned with the pain she has been trying to hold on, “From freshman to senior, she guided me very well, even after she graduated. She’s very focused with that she wants to achieve and that’s very admirable of her. She never let anyone feel alone even when she was so busy with her career. It almost felt like I was so dependent with her guidance and that I cannot possibly move forward without her. She was so straightforward but because she has that kind of personality, I slowly became confident of myself too and it’s all thanks to her. Jennie is that kind of person, understanding and very thoughtful of everyone around her, someone who can uplift anyone away and out from my fears. But of course, someone like her also has days she cannot uplift herself and cannot follow her own guidance… and I was there… and I thought it’s my time around to guide her.”

If there’s a memory of Jennie breaking down to her lowest, it was on that day Chaeyoung arrived back after she found out that Lisa broke up with her, that same day when she had to rush to the hospital, that same day when her world began crumbling down and for a moment she lost all her hopes. However, it was also on that same day when Chaeyoung witnessed Jennie’s brave heart during the storm.

“Chaeng…” Jennie cried and immediately pulled the just arrived Chaeyoung in the hospital ward where she is for a hug, for her to cry on.

Chaeyoung hugged her back, tighter than she can give her and whispers, “Hey, I’m back. I’m here as promised. I heard it from your parents outside. They are talking to the doctors right now.”

“Why are these things happening to me…? What did I do wrong…? Why is God punishing me like this…? I’ve lost Lisa… now I’m like this… what’s next? What did I do to deserve all of these things!?”

Chaeyoung kept her locked and protected around her arms, not allowing making her feel alone at this time she needs someone to lean on the most. No matter how m
