Chapter 3

‘Love is blind’, this old typical phrase has been going around for ages as the definition of love. This can be the closest meaning to love despite of how many meanings can be written on books. The hate, sorrows, cries, pain, happiness, smiles and laughter, all these things, love entails it all. And because of love, people either make the wrong or the right decisions. Nonetheless, there is no right or wrong when it comes to loving someone with all their heart and soul. And for this reason, love is indeed blind.

It was winter night in downtown, and people are enjoying the streets filled with snows and snowflakes falling lightly from the sky. For this cold night, indeed, is the best time to be spending quality time with their loved ones. Thus, the enthusiastic Lisa pulled her girlfriend Jennie out of her house for this very romantic night to spend together. It may be cold and chilling, but Lisa surely kept her girlfriend warm by keeping her hand inside her coat’s pocket and one arm wrapped around her shoulders, just the perfect warmth that Jennie needs from a lover.

“What should we get for dinner?” Lisa deliberated while both of them are looking at the busy restaurants just on the sides, not letting go of Jennie’s petite figure around her arms.

Jennie looks up and suggests, pulling out a cute voice, “Italian? I want to eat some Italian foods tonight. We’ve been having a lot of Chinese and Japanese foods lately.”

“I don’t really like it that much…” Lisa said and as soon as she received a glare from Jennie, she immediately corrects herself, “But if you beg me like that with your cuteness then I’m going to love this Italian dinner you’re craving for. Should we go have one now then? I’m hungry.”

“Yay! You’re really the best!” Jennie squealed and hopped that made some passersby look at her weirdly.

Lisa minded not of how much attention Jennie act of happiness has got, as long as she can see her smile then she could even join her in her small celebration. And Jennie can be the happiest woman alive at the same time for having someone like Lisa, not someone who is perfect yet is supportive and loving enough to be in her side for better or for worse.

“Oh… look at that!” Lisa stopped Jennie’s hops and pointed at a store from across the street.

Jennie’s eyes can only sparkle more and screams in so many thrills, “Ah! Wedding dresses! Let’s go check it out first!”

Lisa was roughly pulled by her excited girlfriend, crossing the busy streets and approaches the designs displayed on the glass which any passersby can view from the outside. The wedding dresses have variety of designs, from y ones to the conservative ones and all decorated in beads and diamonds. Everything seems to be a dream-like in front of Jennie’s wide glittering eyes full of admiration towards the works, and her heart fires up in appreciation.

“Don’t tell me you envy these designs? C’mon babe, your works are almost world-class already and you’ve been featured on magazines and popular personalities even admire your work. Look at people around us, they even recognize you and talking about you.” Lisa commented while eyeing at the people who are trying to approach Jennie and ruin their date, so lethal they can only step back and ignore them.

Jennie though responds with her eyes glued on the dresses, “I know but I don’t want to brag about it. I just love the designs and their originality. And besides, don’t you want to wear one too? Someday, we’ll wear one of these dresses too.”

“W-well…” Lisa blushed and nodded shy. “…if it’s our wedding then yeah… and I’ve been imagining these days that it would be amazing if you’ll be the one who’ll design our wedding dress then have our ceremony overseas and a lot more plans that we have to think about.” She then added, whistling as she looked away to cover up her shyness.

Jennie giggled at Lisa’s shy yet charming actions and couldn’t help herself but to reach in for a quick kiss, not caring of what the passersby and people who recognize her would think for she’s proud and loud being with Lisa for this romantic night. Lisa, on the other hand, was stunned at Jennie’s sweet gestures and as a result, she’s unable to return the favor and stood there blushing hard with her parted lips and eyes looking straight at Jennie’s eye smile.

“I love you.” Jennie beamed.

“I love you more…” Lisa smiled and planted a gentle kiss on Jennie’s forehead while she tightly grasped onto her cold hands she never wanted to let go.

This is yet another dream from a momentous past that flashed into Jennie’s unconscious mind, a past that she wanted to forget as much as possible. Yet, unfortunately, she was haunted by it in her dreams and she was only relieved when her eyes finally opened to welcome another day, another morning to deal with her life that’s draining slowly. And in her bed she found herself alone properly covered in blankets, where one pillow beside her was left empty which supposed to be isn’t, as far as she can recall.

“Huh?” Jennie carefully sat up at the bed. “Where’s Chaeyoung…?” She then instantaneously recognized what’s missing in her bed and around her room and it was Chaeyoung’s presence despite of that dream she had about her past with Lisa.

Not long after Jennie started panicking in her bed, Chaeyoung enters the room with a smile and a tray of food in her arms, greeting her brightly, “Good morning, Jennie! I’m glad you woke up in time!”

“Where did you go?” Jennie yelled out of her anxiousness, making Chaeyoung shocked with her initial reaction. “I woke up all alone and you were supposed to be beside me when I wake up, right? You promised me! I hate you!” She yelled more and threw a pillow but Chaeyoung thankfully dodged it.

Chaeyoung, rather than defending herself with the same tone, she just laughed at Jennie’s sulking expression as she sits on the bed side, put the food tray on the bedside table for a while to give Jennie’s hand a hold and talks in so much calm, “I’m sorry if you woke up without me beside you. I just thought of making you a breakfast because ever since your parents allowed me to stay here with you, I haven’t tried cooking for you. So I thought I would surprise you with something I made. That’s all and it’s not that I broke my promise. I’m still here with you.”

“I’m…” Jennie immediately calmed down after finding out the truth and in so much embarrassment, she bows, “I’m sorry for my harsh words earlier. I jumped into conclusions and it’s just that I got scared when you weren’t beside me because, you see, it’s been a week when you agreed to sleep with me and take care of me and this is the first time I’ll wake up not finding you beside me.”

“It’s okay. I understand. You just surprised me with that pillow attack, that’s all.” Chaeyoung laughed and presented the well-made breakfast set for Jennie, eggs, bread, a glass of milk, fruits and few slices of meat.

“You made all of this? You’re the best!” Jennie beamed at the food served for her on the bed for it smells good and prepared simple but just the way she likes it to be.

Chaeyoung pats Jennie’s head like a little girl, saying, “Dig in before it gets cold. You have to eat all of it, okay? You need energy for today.”

Jennie wanted to talk about the dream that she had for she knows Chaeyoung will give her a full attention without judging or complaining about it but not when Chaeyoung just made this wonderful surprise for her. She can only keep on observing her moves around her room, from cleaning the mess to fixing herself, which is now their room together for a week already since that night she saw Chaeyoung also broke down for the first time in front of her eyes.

“Hey Chaeng, where are you going? You seem to be pretty dressed up to be just at home.” Jennie asked after noticing Chaeyoung’s business attire, her black blazer, white inner blouse and an A-line skirt fitting her long legs covering up her knees.

Chaeyoung then replies while putting on some make-up in front of the dresser, “I’ll go for a job hunting today. You know, I got myself removed from the place where I used to work at so I have to find new one immediately. But don’t worry, I talked about this with your parents and they took a day-off from their work today so they can take care of you while I’m out.”

“It’s my fault, isn’t it, that you resigned from your previous work? After all, I’m a trouble, right?” Jennie frowned and stopped from munching her foods.

Chaeyoung turned around to face her from a distance and eye-to-eye she clearly voices, “We already talked about this last time. You’re not a burden, okay? And you’ll never be a trouble for me and for your parents. And you know why we’re always here for you, right?”

“Yeah, I know…” Jennie said in guilt.

“Then please don’t say you’re a trouble because whatever happens, we’ll be here. So, relax because I won’t let you be alone, not even for a second, okay?” Chaeyoung assured her with a nod and thumbs up to make Jennie smile which was successful.

Jennie returns in silence as she goes on eating her breakfast as ordered and needed but her mind isn’t on how good it tastes anymore, rather her mind is on Chaeyoung’s unconditional love she has been undeniably overlooking all because of someone who broke her heart yet she still cannot let go. Because of this realization, Jennie began to contemplate onto herself and considerations started to come in.

In the meantime, the heartbreaker Lisa whose marriage is ticking near spends her time with her husband-to-be in their mansion checking on their wedding rings that are being presented in front of them both. However, Lisa, as always and has always been, though she’s physically present she’s mentally absent for even if she’s staring at those rings, only Jennie appears in her mind and all those memories they shared particularly that day she secretly planned searching for diamond ring for her.

“What kind of ring are you searching for Miss Manoban? Will you buy for real this time?” The retailer said upon welcoming the nervous Lisa who has been familiar for them as their window shopper.

Lisa awkwardly shakes her head with an uncomfortable laugh while checking on the rings on the glass, “Well, not yet really necessarily right now. But this time, I’m not just going to check because I want to. I’m checking because I’ll really buy one when I find the perfect time to purchase it, not just today since it’s my father’s birthday and I can’t show them I’m bringing home an expensive diamond ring.”

“Is it for Miss Jennie?” The retailer guessed with a confident smirk which made Lisa blush so hard and speechless. “Don’t worry Miss Manoban. We won’t tell anyone. Your secret is safe with us.” She then added.

“I already gave her a silver ring during my simple graduation party and she was already happy with it but I know she is also looking forward for something romantic and a real proposal from me, a formal proposal with a perfect ring for her. Besides, that silver ring I first gave her was only my plan to secretly get her ring finger’s size.” Lisa said with a proud grin on her lips.

And so the retailer presents diamond rings for Lisa to choose from, advising, “These rings are the ones I would personal recommend. And if you would want, we can also engrave her name on it or both of you. We can modify it but there would be additional charges.”

Lisa thoroughly checked on the rings, those varieties of diamond rings that all seem to be perfect for someone like Jennie who deserves to have one. She’s so excited looking at every ring, imagining it wrapping around Jennie’s finger and her cute smile showing all of her gums and full set of teeth as she’s overjoyed by this upcoming surprise. Almost looking like she’s out of her mind imagining these scenarios in her head, Lisa giggled loud enough for the other few customers to raise an eyebrow on her.

“What kind woman is Miss Jennie by the way? We only see her in some magazines and we only know her by her pictures spread online. Maybe we could help you find a perfect ring for her if you tell us more about her.” They suggested.

Lisa then looks up, imagines Jennie with a grin, “Jennie is just a simple woman but she has a lot to offer. She looks cold physically but she’s actually a warm and kind-hearted woman. She’s a quiet type but definitely gets loud when she knows she’s right. She easily gets thrilled with simple things in general. She’s not picky and she’s fine with whatever I give her. But then again, she’s the love of my life so she deserves something special once in a while.”

“I see. You must be so lucky to have her Miss Manoban.” The retailer chuckled then pulls out a ring from the glass as she recommends, “How about this ring? It speaks simplicity but the small pieces of diamonds surrounding it can also mean the simple moments you have with her so far but at the same time these are the moments she treasures the most. Although this ring is being rarely recommended to other customers, I think for someone like Jennie as you described her, this one should look perfect on her.”

Her imaginations were only disturbed when her phone started ringing and clumsily excuses herself, “Oh, please excuse me. I’ll be back. I’ll just answer this call from dad.”

And on that night of the same day is when Lisa’s future and imaginations on living a forever with Jennie and loving her shattered for she was suddenly forced into forming a future with someone else she never loved with her whole heart. It was on this night that her young coward heart failed to fight for her true love and chained by her parents’ orders.

This piece of memory was cut short when the metalsmith that they personally invited for lunch in front of them started explaining the meaning of the wedding rings, its significance and how it’s professionally made just for their upcoming auspicious day. Indeed, Lisa is amazed of the we
