chapter XVII: turtledoves
the aster and the sunflower.Little Angel.
Jennie grinned as she took a picture of Lisa who was balancing a fry on her nose while Ella had two fries as vampire fangs, both were goofily looking at each other; Jennie laughed at their antics and continued to snap photos of them. The three of them had decided to have lunch at Benny’s because Ella was amazed with her sister’s wonderful stories about the place, and no doubt Ella was in love with the place, she had made friends with the waiters and waitresses and had even befriended Sally, Benny’s wife.
“Little Angel, wanna dance?” Lisa asked as she heard the festive music start to play
“Yeah!” Ella said excitedly
Benny’s angel, that’s what they immediately named her. Ella beamed at the monicker; it was like the best thing Ella heard today. Lisa on the other hand decided to put on a Christmas show, encouraging other customers and the two Kim’s to dance along to the beat of ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ that was playing from the jukebox. Most of the customers then joined them, no one was holding out their cameras or fishing for their phones to capture the moment, instead, everyone was actually living in the moment.
And as Lisa knelt as she gestured to Ella to show off her dance steps, she couldn’t help but try her best to remember every single thing that was happening right at this moment, because she aims to keep this precious memory in her back pocket, for when she feels sad and down, she’ll simply take a peek at this moment and remember the happiness she feels in her chest as she spends Christmas Day with Jennie and Ella, two of the most important people in Lisa’s life.
“That was beautiful, Angel” Sally exclaimed as she lifted her up and hugged Ella after their little production number
“Thank you Miss Sally” Ella giggled as she was then put down back on the ground
“You’re an amazing dancer, little angel” Lisa said
“Well, Jennie Unnie taught me everything I needed to know” Ella bragged
“You dance professionally?” Lisa asked, amused at the new information
Jennie blushed as she ruffled her sister’s hair.
“Ballet” Jennie stated, Lisa nodded with amusement
“Wanna teach me someday?” Lisa asked
“Yeah sure, when do you wanna break your toes?” Jennie asked
“Never mind” Lisa muttered, Ella just chuckled at the two’s banters
“I’m gonna use the rest room, okay?” Jennie said
With only the two left alone, Ella’s smile suddenly went form overly excited to calm.
“Hey, are you okay?” Lisa asked
“Unnie?” Ella started “Can you promise me something?” she asked
Lisa simply nodded.
“Take care of Jennie Unnie when I’m gone” Ella said
And Lisa swore she heard her heart break. Lisa did not respond, instead she kept her head low, her hands clenched into fists, she was never one who could handle such things so lightly. She was never a fan of death, I mean, no one is anyways.
“Once I’m gone I know she’ll break. She’s been strong for a long time, but she’ll crack soon, and I’m afraid she’ll find it hard to build herself up again” Ella said
Jennie was right about Ella having quite an old soul as well. She spoke like a true adult.
“She has a lot in her mind that she shares with no one, she keeps a lot to herself and would rather have you think she’s fine even though she’s shattering inside” Ella smiled sadly at Lisa
“Promise me, Unnie” Ella said as she held the Thai’s hands
Lisa fought the urge to cry.
“I promise” Lisa said
“Bring her sunflowers. She’ll love them because she’ll think of me when she sees them. Take her here because she’ll remember this beautiful moment if she comes back here. Buy her milk ice cream, both of us love milk ice cream” Ella said happily, showing off a toothy grin that made Lisa smile
“Okay” Lisa said
“Cross your heart?” Ella asked
Lisa crossed her heart.
“Cross my heart” Lisa said
“Make her smile, okay?” Ella said
“Okay, angel” Lisa said as she planted a soft kiss on the top of Ella’s head, like how her mother always used to do with her
“Now who’s excited to go to Duncan’s Toy Chest?!” Jennie exclaimed as she excitedly sat back down with the two
“ME!” Ella and Lisa squealed in unison
Jennie laughed, of course Lisa would also be excited to go to Duncan’s, and it was basically the main thing that the 90’s kids loved when they were watching Home Alone. Too bad Jennie never watched it.
“Let’s go then!” Jennie exclaimed.
...
The drive to Duncan’s was exciting for the two old souls who were currently singing along to Johnny Mathis’ “It’s Beginning to look a lot like Christmas” that was blasting from Jennie’s stereo. Jennie was literally driving two kids to a toy store, but little did they know Jennie was planning on buying a new train set for herself, and as expected, as they arrived at the store, the two quickly left Jennie and entered the toy store.
“Twerps” Jennie mumbled, laughing at how much Jisoo has influenced her already
As Jennie entered the store, no doubt kids were playing all over, squeals, giggles and cries of joy were heard throughout the store; its interior actually sort of gave a Santa’s workshop kind of vibe, with statues of elves “working” on the toys that are to be delivered by the jolly old man called St. Nick. Most of the tables and shelves were of mahogany, Christmas lights were hung around the walls, hundreds of toys were displaye
