Chapter 2: Stargazing

The Limbo of Calamity

The dorm room was dimmed, only letting natural light shine into the room through the windows. Day was succumbing into night and Kyungsoo did not bother turning the lights on. His vision was not the best and he would have switched on the lights if they didn't shine an annoying yellow color that only made his eyes hurt more. He picked up his pen, spinning it between his fingers as he leaned his head on his palm. A sarcastic smile found its way onto his face and he let out a sigh. The confusion of yesterdays event was still there. Kyungsoo didn't understand what had happened, and although he was fairly sure he shouldn't be overthinking it he couldn't help but feel as if he was going to encounter the tall weirdo again – as if there was a connection between them.

"I can't believe you are that deprieved of human interaction", he thinks to himself because no one is connected. It was just a coincidence that their eyes met, and even if it wasn’t it’s not like people don’t look into other peoples eyes all the time.

It had been a while since he had someone in his life he could call a friend. Most so called friendships he had were not really friendships, just casual acquaintances. He wasn’t sure why people avoided him as he was never a problem child. Kyungsoo sinks into the chair and chuckles a bit when he remembers how people used to think he was some sort of genius because of the stereotype that all quiet people had to be smart. People would attempt to befriend him based on that assumption and eventually leave when they realized he was nothing above the average; everyone wanted to be friends with the smart kids, they could help you with your homework and most importantly they would sometimes help you cheat on tests.

”Hey roommate?” a soft voice reached out to him, ”Are you ok? You seem to have spaced out a bit.”
This soft voice, full of empathy and genuine worry, came from his roommate Kim Minseok. Kyungsoo had flinched when Minseok’s words reached him which made the kind roommate laugh. This was their second day together as roommates in the College, both of them were still getting used to it and each other. Minseok stood up from his bed and walked closer to where Kyungsoo was sitting, He bent over placing his elbows on the desk, supporting his head with his hands and turned his face to look Kyungsoo in the eyes.

”I know we just met, but you can always tell me what bothers you,” his voice was soft and genuine, he really meant what he said, ”We are going to be roommates after all and I don’t plan on changing roommates anytime soon so we will have to get used to each other”.

”Minseok, thank you, but you really don’t have to worry about me it’s fine” Kyungsoo tried to brush off Minseok’s attempt to make him open up.
He hasn’t opened up to anyone in years and he would rather have it stay so. But, something about his roommate made him feel at ease, his voice were like two arms inviting him into a comforting embrace. Minseok’s perfectly almond-shaped eyes pierced right through him; forcing open a door whose key has been lost by picking the lock open with a hairpin.

He took a deep breath,

”A guy kept looking at me, I think he wanted to pick a fight with me or something”, Kyungsoo said it in the most serious tone without any hint of joking.

His roommate couldn’t help but cover his mouth and throw his head back laughing at what he had just heard.
”How can you make such an assumption based on that?” Minseok was almost mocking him, although in the most friendly way possible. ”Why didn’t you just ask him what he wanted, maybe he wanted to be friends…” he smirked teasingly ”..or he thought you were cute.”

Kyungsoo’s eyes widened slightly and he tried to subtly cover his face when he realized how red it was. It amused Minseok how shy his roommate was, he loved teasing people and he definitely had luck being roommates with someone who was so easy to tease. The conversation went from friendly teasing to talking about favorite ice cream flavors to common interests. They found out that they were the perfect match as roommates, none of them would create a mess as both had an obsession with having everything neat and organized.

Their conversation started fading as it got later. Tucked into the blankets of their comfortable beds they finally let their tired eyes have a rest.

It was difficult to rest. Sleep was not an option right now. His thoughts were keeping him awake although, his eyes begged him for rest. Indeed a sensational feeling, as if someone is pouing salt into your eyes. Chanyeol had told his roommate that he was staying up to finish an assignment, which of course was a lie because they had not been assigned with anything yet (it was only the second day), fortunately his roommate was one of those people who wouldn’t notice such small lies. He put the back of his hand to his forehead and closed his eyes. Only the moon was illuminating the sky with its trustworthy allegiance of stars shimmering peacefully around it. Nights like these were made for poor decisions. The tall boy stood beneath the wide sky whose temptation was too strong to resist. We all know the most beautiful stories are written in the dark. No matter how beautifully daylight illuminates our presence, it can’t compare to the overwhelming emotions night brings us. It is because these are the hours when we are supposed to be asleep, our eyes give in to the dark and let our imagination complete it.

He found himself standing in front of the closed window. Curiosity got the best of him and he decided to peek into the room. Two sleeping students, sound asleep. The first one his eyes trailed to not being within his interests at all so he turned to look at the other sleeping boy. Kyungsoo. Soon Chanyeol realized that the visit had no point, he hadn’t planned anything. Not like he could have planned anything as he knows any sane person would be asleep right now. But, this is where the adrenaline of the night kick in, when the poor decisions are the only thing you can think about.

He knocked on the window.

”What am I doing”, panicked thoughts crossed Chanyeol’s head after he had knocked on the window.

A grunt was heard from inside the dorm and Chanyeol was frozen in place, afraid to move even a milimeter of his being. Something was approaching the window from the inside of the room. Chanyeol finally managed to loosen himself and quickly put his hands into his pockets. If he was going to be caught standing under someone’s window like this at least he wanted to look cool, maybe even slightly intimidating. Looking up at the sky while gently rocking back and forth, from his toes to his heels, quietly whistling a melody to distract himself.

”What are you even doing here!?” a deep voice hissed at the distracted, tall boy.

It was different from the first time they saw each other. The first difference being that they are actually talking with each other right now and the second one being that this time Chanyeol was the one who was slightly afraid. A shiver went down his spine and he gulped attempting to collect himself and regain his confidence.

”I…I…uh…” his words couldn’t escape his mouth, instead he stood there stuttering. Worst of all, a single human being provoked this reaction.

”You what? Speak up or leave” Kyungsoo’s voice got angrier. ”I will report you to the principal if you keep being such a creep.”

Chanyeol bit his lower lip and considered walking away. Instead he looked towards the now open window, locking his eyes on Kyungsoo’s just like they had done the first time they met. His lips curled into something that looked like a smile, not a happy one but a slightly intimidating one. It was as if he was telling him he was trouble with unspoken words. Kyungsoo’s tired eyes ceased to feel heavy and instead payed close attention to Chanyeol who was walking closer towards the window.

”I was thinking we could have some fun” he replied in the most cold yet inviting tone.

They were so close, to each other that if Chanyeol wanted, he could have drained all of Kyungsoo’s energy. And the temptation to do so was there. Bu the held back and leaned on the wall and looked up at Kyungsoo raising an eyebrow as if to ask him whether he would accept his offer or not. He reached out his hand to Kyungsoo as if he was some princess from a Disney movie needing to be escorted down the stairs to a ball; except he wasn’t going to be escorted down stairs, Chanyeol was asking him to jump.

”What the actual are you on about? I have already lost enough sleep, i’m not going anywhere” his voice cracked mid-sentence, revealing the nervousness he had been trying to hide.

”Oh, is that so?”

Chanyeol grabbed Kyungsoo by the wrist and pulled him from the window. It was an impulsive action which none of them had the time to process, not even Chanyeol who pulled the poor boy down from the window. He had caught the latter in his embrace, if he hadn’t he would have fallen on the hard ground and who knows how many bones he could have broken, he was so small and soft-looking. Chanyeol was at least a whole head taller than him. The shorter was trying to hold his breath, if he didn’t he would be breathing straight at Chanyeol’s bare neck.

”You can let me go now”

Kyungsoo shook his head and quickly let go of Chanyeol. Without realizing it, Kyungsoo was the one who had pulled Chanyeol in the tight embrace. He turned around to cup his face and collect himself from what just had happened.

Inhale.

Exhale.

”This is fine. This is fine. This is fine-” he repeated quietly to himself.

Chanyeol couldn’t help but find this quite adorable.

”By the way, my name is Chanyeol”

The wide-eyed boy turned to look at him, almost shaking.

”If you expect me to tell you my name after this then yo-”

”I already know your name, Do Kyungsoo.”

Run. That was all Kyungsoo could think about. But his legs did not let him, they had given up on him and he was left standing still stuttering with thousands of thoughts. Was Minseok wrong and he right? Did this guy Chanyeol want to pick a fight with him? Is this the end??

”Listen, I don’t know why you are doing this and my life is nothing special, but please let me live” he begged with eyes on the verge of tears.

”Do you think i’m here to kill you?” Chanyeol laughed with his whole body, slapping his thigh.

Kyungsoo tilted his head and furrowed his eyebrows.

”The stars are beautiful tonight, they told me to take you with me to gaze at them.”

Chanyeol took Kyungsoo’s hands in his and lead him across the campus. They passed the dormitories, main building where all the classes are held and reached the gates. There is a door right beside the great gate that is never locked. Chanyeol tilted his head to look at the human next to him wondering if he had followed him out of fear or if he actually wanted to gaze at the stars. He knows that he basically forced him into this but a part of him hoped that he actually wanted to enjoy the stars in his company.
They were behind the campus the place Chanyeol for the first time had reached the limbo. Being so close to campus and the town you would think more people go there, but it was almost completely isolated and untouched by humans. The perfect place for stargazing.
Chanyeol spread a blanket on the grass and patted the free space on it next to him telling Kyungsoo to sit there.

They sat there in silence. It wasn’t an awkward silence like they would otherwise had, it was a silence none of them wanted to break. The stars were indeed beautiful that night, such a starry night hadn’t been seen in the city for years. Suddenly Chanyeol felt bad, an overwhelming guilt filled him for having forced Kyungsoo to go here with him. He wanted to apologize to him for dragging him along. Kyungsoo was not supposed to be anything more than just a being he harvests energy from, he isn’t suspposed to befriend him. But  that is what makes Chanyeol so different from other demons.

A weight fell on Chanyeol’s lap, it was Kyungsoo’s head. He was so tired that he couldn’t keep his eyes open for one more second. Although Chanyeol had only known Kyungsoo for a few hours he knew that this wasn’t something he would normally do, especially not trying to snuggle for warmth. Chanyeol really did feel sorry for forcing him to go so he picked him up gently and carried him to his dorm, without waking him or his roommate up.

I feel Kyungsoo though ;__; being deprived of human interaction and all. That was an interesting first meeting for them.
