Letting Go

Forcing his heavy lids open, the man silently laid in bed and continued to stare at the glowing green numbers resting on the nightstand beside his bed. The numbers read 2:24AM, nearly four hours after his call to Yejin. It was completely dark in this room–in her room. He let out an exhausted sigh as he closed his eyes and turned to his side. He pulled the covers up to cover his bare upper body. It was a habit for him to sleep without a shirt. Opening his eyes once more, he stared at the empty spot beside him.   Ever since he and Yejin remarried, she had asked to sleep in separate rooms since she wasn't yet ready to share a room with him. And he was fine with it. He understood that she'd need her space from him, but he never knew that the nights she didn't sleep in his arms, she slept in another man's. He didn't know that when the space in his bed was left empty and cold that she had been warming up another man's bed. It hurt. Of course, it hurt. She had been going behind his back ever since they got remarried to sleep in that man's arms and it wasn't only until about a month ago that Chanyeol found out. He wanted to stop her and make him go away, but what power did he have? He couldn't make her stay. Sure, she was legally bound to him, but what was that going to do? Their signatures on a pathetic piece of paper wouldn't stop her from loving someone else. He couldn't stop her, not when he knew everything was his fault. He broke their marriage and he was the one who had snuck behind her back to convince her parents to let her marry him again. How could he even think of stopping her and making her stay by his side when the methods he used to bring her back were secretive and manipulative? He knew he was wrong to do what he did, and he knew she'd never believe him if he said that he loved her, but he still had to try and bring her back to his side.   Closing his eyes, Chanyeol held her sheets closer into his arms. Her fading scent lingered faintly and it brought only the slightest bit of comfort to his breaking and aching chest. She wasn't going to come home, was she? She wasn't going to come back to him. She was going to abandon him, wasn't she? She was going to choose that other man.   "Chanyeol," she softly whispered and breathlessly pushed him back. She gazed up at him, her hand resting against his bare shoulder, "Will you always love me?"   Smiling, he tenderly kissed her lips and jaw, "That ring is my promise to you, Yejin. I will love only you."   Pulling back, Chanyeol deeply gazed at her, "Promise me something, Yejin?"   "Hmm?" she hummed and gently his cheek.   "Promise me you won't throw me away. Promise me you won't leave me ever," he whispered against her fingertips.   Nodding, she placed her hand against the back of his neck and drew him close, whispering a gentle "I promise" against his lips before letting their lips meet and winding her arms around him to pull him closer.    Chanyeol sighed and tried to swallow the thickness in his throat down as his tears slid across the bridge of his nose. It hurt. He felt like he was dying–no, he was sure dying would hurt way less. It felt like he couldn't breathe and there was a terrible pressure on his chest. He tightly squeezed his eyes shut, attempting to dull out the pain as he gripped tightly onto the sheets. His sobs came out choked and broken.    No matter how long she was gone, no matter how many hours of the day he didn't see her, Yejin always came home to him. She always returned. But now, Chanyeol wasn't sure if she would.   Suddenly, the front door clicked open. He silently and attentively listened to her footsteps as she quietly made her way into their home. She opened the door to her room and froze at the door, noticing her husband in her bed. Too tired to ask him to leave and too exhausted to grab her blanket and pillow, she forced herself to shower before laying in be
