Chapter 7

The (Expensive) Cure to a Broken Heart

Key slowly pushed the door open and walked inside. It was the first time he was in Jinki’s room, since the older had always refused to sleep with him. He tried to take a look at the room but heavy dark curtains were keeping the sunlight from entering. Careful not to bump into the furniture, he walked alongside the wall to reach the curtains. He heard someone groan when he drew the curtains apart. He had to close his eyes a few seconds due to the sudden blinding light and turned to the bed. He could make out the outline of Jinki’ body under the covers and he smiled. The older was buried under the covers, the only thing Key could see being Jinki’s hair. He walked to him and sat on the side of the bed, grabbing the covers and pulling them gently not to startle Jinki. Sohye had said that he was not a morning person, and the last thing he wanted was to make him grumpier.

He heard Jinki mumble something but he couldn’t make out the words. The older was lying on his back, his arm resting on his eyes to protect them from the light. Key smiled and shook his arm.

“Jinki…”

He didn’t react and Key shook him harder.

“Jinki, you need to wake up. The physio will be here soon.”

Jinki ignored him completely and pushed him away. His eyes were still closed and he seemed to be still half asleep. Key found himself watching him for a moment. He usually tried not to stare at his customers (unless he knew they wanted him to) since he knew it was rude, but Jinki hadn’t woken up yet and Key intended to make the most of it.

Jinki was wearing baggy pyjama bottoms and a black t-shirt which gave a nice view on his strong biceps and chest. Key would not be surprised if there were abs hidden under his t-shirt… Jinki had a well built upper body and Key had to admit it was very attractive. Jinki also had full lips and brown eyes that looked like two straight lines when he smiled. He had an angel smile, the kind of smile which lit up the Earth like a sun or which established world peace. Key really wondered how he got to meet someone so pure.

Jinki stirred and Key suddenly remembered he was supposed to wake him up. He put a hand on his shoulder and shook him.

“Jinki ? Jinki, wake up ! Jink-”

Before he had time to realize what was happening, he felt an arm slide around his waist and he found himself lying on the bed. Jinki was propped up on his elbows, an arm on each side of Key’s waist. He still looked half awake, with his eyes still closed and his hair tousled. Key felt his cheeks burn.

“Key.”

His voice was slow and raspy with sleep and it did weird things to Key’s heart.

“J-Jinki. Sohye sent me to wake you up, you need to get up.”

“It might be a bit difficult.”

Key’s eyes widened.

“T-that’s not what I m-”

“I know.” He said, a small mischievous smile on his lips. “I’m just kidding.”

Key sighed a sigh of relief and Jinki lied back down next to him.

“Y-yah ! You shouldn’t joke about those things ! And don’t go back to sleep, Sohye asked me to-”

“I don’t care about what she said.”

Key sat up and frowned. Jinki was already falling back asleep. Sohye had entrusted him with a mission and he intended to carry it out. He grabbed Jinki by the shoulders to shake him once more. There was no way he would let him go back to sleep now when the physio would be there soon. Sohye trusted him and she would never ask him anything anymore if he failed. A part of him liked to be involved in Jinki’s life, even if he denied it.

“Wake up !”

Jinki finally opened his eyes, heaving a sigh. He grabbed Key by the waist and forced him to lay back down on the bed. Key was lying on his side, Jinki’s chest pressed against his back and his arms securely wrapped around his waist. He blushed and tried to fight back, to no avail. Jinki was stronger than him.

“You can try all you want.” Jinki said.

Key could hear his smile and it annoyed him a little.

“Yah ! Sohye and the physio will be here soon !”

“You’ve been saying that for a while now.” Jinki mumbled.

“You can’t go back to sleep !”

“They’re not here yet, we’ve got time.”

He was tempted to hit Jinki for being so stubborn, but he didn’t. He was still his customer, after all. He should have shut up and let Jinki have his way. But strangely, Key acted and talked to him in an informal way. He was not usually like this.

Key was not shy, nor embarrassed. Key was seductive at heart and was not the type of man to let people walk over him. Key loved when people stared at him with envy, he loved when people desired him.

Kibum, on the other hand… Kibum was more sensitive than Key, more shy. Kibum was the type of person to be embarrassed when being caught singing and dancing to girl bands’ songs. Kibum liked to cook with love like his grandma had taught him to. Kibum liked to take a walk in the gardens and go to the cinema to watch romance movies.

Kim Kibum was Key’s real name. And it was the person he was outside of work.

Without really knowing why, Key had found himself to be Kibum when he was with Jinki. He wondered whether it had to do with the fact that Jinki had no intention of having with him, but even if it was, it couldn’t be the only reason. He had already had a few customers who had refused to sleep with him, but this had never happened. He had already respected the boundary between private and professional life. He had even started working under a new name to differentiate the two even more.

And yet, Jinki had achieved what Kibum had forbidden himself to do.

Jinki pulled Key closer and rested in head in the crook of Key’s neck. The younger could feel the warmth of the older’s body and his breath tickling his skin.

He closed his eyes for a few seconds and the door opened. Kibum turned his head to look at the two people standing in the doorframe. Sohye and a man - he looked like he was in his forties - were standing there, staring at Jinki and Key. Kibum was a bit embarrassed to be caught in that situation and tried to get up, but Jinki’s arms were holding him too tight.

“Jinki.” Sohye warned.

There was an authoritative tone to her voice, and Jinki let go of Key with a sigh. The latter stood up quickly.

“Key, this is Mr Han. Mr Han, this is Key, a… friend of Jinki’s.”

“Nice to meet you.” Key politely said.

“Likewise.” The man said, looking him up and down with something akin to disgust.

He didn’t look very friendly and Key wondered if it had to do with the fact that he had just caught them hugging in a bed.

“I’m… gonna go.” Key said, leaving.

He saw Sohye nod and she closed the door behind her. He hoped she wasn’t too disappointed. He had failed miserably, and seeing the way the physio had stared at the both of them, Key doubted she would ever ask him to wake up Jinki again.

…………………………..

Jinki was now wide awake and he felt a bit ashamed of the way he had acted earlier. Of course, he had been very tired and not very awake when it happened. But he still pretty much had taken Key in his arms. In his own bed.

They were eating breakfast and Jinki was trying his best to avoid meeting Key’s eyes. The atmosphere was a bit awkward, since they had never really had physical contact before except for holding hands. Hugging Key went against Jinki’s principles. He had clearly told Key that he had no intention of sleeping with him, and yet, he had initiated physical contact. Sure, hugging him and sleeping with him were two very different things, but still. He should have been able to keep his hands off the younger man.

The ringing of the doorbell got him back to his senses. He frowned. He didn’t expect anyone today, and even less at that hour. It was not even nine thirty.

Mrs Park went to open the door - although she was the maid, she acted more like a butler - and Jinki’s friends came in. He met them in the hall to greet them.

“What are you doing here ?” Jinki asked, frowning.

“Well, that’s a nice way to welcome your friends…” Jonghyun snorted. “Please, do tell us if we’re bothering you !”

“You usually call someone before coming over to their house. There’s something called a phone, if you don’t know.”

“Ah yes, a phone, I’m familiar with that object. I briefly recall you hanging up on me with it before.”

Jinki heaved a sigh. The inconvenient of having his friends over was that he had no way of making them shut up.

“Next time, be sure to call before-”

He wondered why his friends even bothered coming here if they weren’t going to listen to a word he was saying anyway. They were all staring at something behind him, and Jinki frowned. He turned his head to see Key standing in the kitchen, only wearing his burgundy red robe.

“Am I dead ? Is this Heaven ?” Taemin asked, a dreamy look on his face.

“I don’t know but I’m pretty sure I saw an angel.” Jonghyun answered.

Minho rolled his eyes at the other’s reaction but Jinki couldn’t help but notice he too had trouble taking his eyes off Key.

Jinki went to the kitchen and closed the door. Taemin pouted.

“As I was saying,” Jinki said, going back to them. “next time, be sure to call before coming.”

“Okay, okay, promised.” Jonghyun said, sighing.

They went to the living room and Mr Bang brought them some tea and biscuits.

“So what brings you here exactly ?”

“Jonghyun wanted to come, he asked us if we wanted to come with him.” Minho answered.

Jinki glanced at Jonghyun questioningly.

“I just thought we hadn’t seen each other in a while.”

“We saw each other yesterday.” Jinki deadpanned.

“Oh, yeah ! What I meant was I hadn’t been here in a while ! We never know, you might have changed things, you know, redecorated…”

Jinki raised an eyebrow. Jonghyun was obviously not there to take a look at his house’s new design.

“Are you sure it doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that Key is spending the weekend here ?”

“Of course not !” Jonghyun said, faking to be shocked.

“He came to see if you were putting his money ‘to good use’.” Minho said.

Jonghyun glared at him and Jinki smiled when he heard him whisper ‘traitor’ faintly.

He started talking about something else and Key met them in the living room later. Taemin and Jonghyun both seemed to be feeling disappointed that Key was no longer wearing the rather revealing robe, and Jinki couldn’t help but smile. These two would definitely never change.

Key was no longer wearing his robe, instead, he was dressed in a fluffy gray sweater with a turtleneck and a pair of very short shorts. He sat in an armchair next to Jinki and the latter had to keep himself from staring. His friends were there and they obviously intended to watch their every move.

“Key !” Taemin said with a big smile before hugging him.

Key seemed a bit surprised but he still smiled while greeting him. He then greeted Minho by shaking his hand, and did the same for Jonghyun.

“Happy to see you again, baby.” He said, gently kissing Key’s hand instead of shaking it.

Key chuckled and sat back down. Jinki just sent Jonghyun a glare, while the latter mischievously smiled upon seeing Jinki’s reaction.

He should have been used to it, since Jonghyun always had an urge to flirt with every human being he deemed attractive. He even flirted with Taemin and Sohye every now and then. It didn’t upset Minho at all though, because he knew how Jonghyun was. He didn’t flirt with Taemin because he liked him, but only because it was fun. It was Jonghyun’s way of being affectionate.

“Now that we’re all here, what do we do ?” Minho asked.

“You didn’t plan anything ?” Jinki asked, raising an eyebrow.

“We thought it’d be nice to go out for lunch, but it’s still too early…”

“Oh ! I know ! We could play a game !” Taemin said excitingly.

Taemin may have been an adult, but he still acted like a child sometimes. He loved games and sweets.

“What game ?”

“I might have an idea…” Jonghyun said, smirking.

Jinki already knew he wouldn’t like it.

“What is it ?” Taemin asked, curious.

“Let’s play strip poker.”

Minho’s eyes widened and Jinki sighed. He glanced at Key to see that the younger didn’t seem unphased or shocked at all. Jinki wondered if he had already played this kind of game with a customer before.

“It sounds fun !” Taemin said.

“It’s not a good idea...” Minho deadpanned.

“No.” Jinki said coldly.

Taemin pouted and Minho heaved a sigh of relief.

“You don’t wanna play because you’re all losers ! Except Minnie. Minnie’s a winner.” Jonghyun said and Taemin smiled.

“We’re not losers.” Minho said.

“Oh really ? Then why won’t you play ?”

“I say we vote !” Taemin suggested. “Those who want to play raise one hand.”

Taemin and Jonghyun raised their hand while Jinki crossed his arms. Minho seemed to be hesitating. It was not a surprise, since Jonghyun had picked at his competitiveness and Minho never refused a challenge. He would have done anything to prove he was the best.

Taemin turned to Key.

“What about you ? What do you think ?”

It was a draw, two votes for the idea and two votes against. Their fate was in Key’s hands now.

“Well…”

They were all staring at him expectantly.

“I vote against.”

“Noooo !” Taemin said, falling on the couch dramatically.

“It’s all your fault, Jinki.” Jonghyun said, looking disappointed.

“I didn’t do anything.”

“You influenced him !”

“Not at all.”

“What do we do now ?” Taemin asked, pouting.

“We could still play poker, but you know, while keeping our clothes on.” Minho suggested.

That was how they found themselves searching for a poker set hidden in Jinki’s attic for at least half an hour. Taemin and Minho were up in the attic, while the others were down the ladder, staring up at the trap door.

“If I’m attacked by spiders, I swear-”

“There are no spiders here.” Minho said to try and reassure him.

“Oh yeah ? And who made those spiderwebs, huh ? The boxes ?”

“Did you find it or not ?” Jonghyun asked from downstairs, loud enough for them to hear him.

“No ! What does it look like, exactly ?”

“It’s just a silver briefcase.” Jinki answered.

“I’m starting to regret that poker idea.” Taemin admitted when he saw another spiderweb.

Minho’s eyes fell on the said briefcase when he moved a few boxes.

“Found it !”

“Finally !” Taemin complained.

“Well, it would have been quicker if you had searched for it with me, instead of staring at the ceiling.”

“I was looking for the briefcase ! I was just careful not to touch spiderwebs.”

They climbed down with the said briefcase and went back to the living room to play. Taemin complained to Jinki because there was obviously enough space in his big house to set up a room for playing games, and Jinki rolled his eyes. Fortunately, there was nothing missing from the poker set, all of the poker equipment was there - although a bit dusty - even after spending so many years in the attic. The briefcase had belonged to Jinki’s father, he had offered him for his twentieth birthday. Unfortunately, Jinki had never liked poker that much, and he had put it away in the attic. He had always preferred chess. Jonghyun and Minho liked to make fun of him about that by comparing him to Professor X from X-Men - because of the wheelchair, as well as his love for chess -, also saying that he would soon become bald.

The game ended and Key was the winner. Nobody suspected him to be a great player. He  perfectly knew how to pretend, and it made Jinki a bit uneasy. Jonghyun and Minho had been at each other’s throats for the whole game, only to be flabbergasted upon seeing Key’s cards. Taemin and Jinki knew they didn’t stand a chance from the beginning, so they weren’t very surprised. As for Minho, he was devastated.

When came noon, they went out for lunch. Mr Bang was rather happy to see them leave, since he hadn’t planned to cook food for so many people and he hadn’t had the time to grocery shopping.

Since Key had won the game, he was the one deciding where they would eat. He chose a rather simple restaurant in the center of the city and they all had to admit the food tasted amazing. It was Jinki who payed the bill, since Jonghyun had begged him to think about his very empty bank account. It didn’t really bother Jinki, he had always had more money than he needed anyway.

Taemin insisted for them to go shopping after lunch, to Minho’s great disappointment. The shops were very crowded on Saturday afternoons and they were not always adapted to disabled people. Jonghyun, Jinki and Minho stayed in front of the shops most of the time while Key and Taemin were shopping, but Jinki wasn’t really surprised. He had noticed Key obviously took great interest in how he looked, it wasn’t a surprise he was a fashion addict.

They went home a few hours later, arms filled with bags containing brand new expensive clothes.

Key and Jinki hadn’t been alone since this morning and Jinki was rather happy his friends had come over. He was still a bit embarrassed of his behaviour that morning and he was a bit afraid of being alone with him. Jonghyun, Minho and Taemin left a bit before dinner.

This time, the cook had already made dinner and they had dinner in the dining room. Key had changed into his silk robe, like every evening, and he was sitting next to Jinki. He talked about his afternoon and the clothes he and Taemin had bought. Apparently, they had also bought some clothes for him. He wondered what they could possibly have bought him. Taemin didn’t always have good fashion sense - despite being a model - and he didn’t always respect Jinki’s taste. He hoped the said clothes weren’t too flashy. Jinki had always preferred simple clothes.

Key had suggested they watched a movie and Jinki hadn’t had the heart to say no to him. He went in the living room while Key cleared the table.

There was a loud noise, akin to a glass shattering and somebody screamed. Jinki recognised Sohye’s voice right away and he hurried to the kitchen. Key was standing in the doorframe, surrounded by shattered glass scattered on the floor. Sohye was standing a few steps away from him and she kept apologising.

“What happened ?” Jinki asked worriedly.

“We bumped into each other and the vase fell.” Key answered.

“I-I was just about to put some water in it because the flowers were starting to wither and Key walked out of the kitchen at the same time as I was walking in-”

He understood why there was so much glass on the floor, the vase was a gift from his aunt, and it was a very big vase.

Sohye looked panicked. She was wearing shoes but Key was barefoot and when he made a step forward, he accidentally stepped on one of the glass pieces.

“Don’t ! Don’t move.”

When he raised his leg, blood started running down his foot and he winced a bit. Sohye had her hands over in shock and kept whispering ‘I’m sorry’s. Key couldn’t make a step without stepping on the broken glass and Jinki came closer. He held his hand out and Key sent him a questioning look.

“Come.” He said, grabbing his hand and pulling it towards him.

Key understood right away, but seemed to hesitate a bit. He glanced at Jinki as if to ask if it was okay and Jinki nodded. Key put a hand on his shoulder before sitting on Jinki’s lap, careful not to step on glass again.

Once he was settled in Jinki’s lap, the latter went back to the living room and stopped right in front of the couch so that Key wouldn’t have to stand on his injured foot.

“Don’t move.” He said, going back to Sohye.

He saw her in the corridor, she had a broomstick in one hand and a first-aid kit in the other.

“Thank you.” He said when she gave him the first-aid kit. “Be careful with the glass.”

“Jinki, don’t worry, it’s not the first time I pick up broken glass.” She said, smiling at him reassuringly.

He smiled in return and went back to the living room. Key was still sitting on the couch, and Jinki came closer. He gently grabbed Key’s foot and put it on his lap, before opening the first-aid kit and putting it on the coffee table. He disinfected the wound and then carefully wrapped a bandage around his foot.

“Thank you.”

Jinki looked up and his eyes met Key’s. He smiled and put his leg back on the couch. He touched the sole of his foot without meaning to do so and Key jumped.

“Did I hurt you ?” Jinki asked, worried.

“No !” Key said hurriedly, looking down. “It’s just that… It tickles...”

“It does ?” Jinki asked, raising an eyebrow

He smirked and Key’s eyes widened. Jinki grabbed his uninjured foot and started tickling him. Key started laughing, struggling to get out of Jinki’s grasp.

“N-no ! Jinki !”

He fell down on the couch and Jinki’s smile widened.

“No ! Y-yah ! P-please !”

Jinki stopped and Key heaved a sigh of relief as he turned to lie down on his side. Jinki couldn’t stop smiling. Key’s eyes were a bit teary due to all the laughing, his robe was slightly parted and his shoulder was bare. His milky white skin looked so soft and inviting...

“It’s not very polite to stare at people, you know.”

His hair was tousled and without really knowing what he was doing, Jinki raised a hand to gently run his fingers through the blond locks. They stayed silent, and after a second or two Key put a hand on Jinki’s wrist. The older suddenly got back to his senses.

“So, what about that movie ?” He said, looking away.

Key silently nodded and Jinki mentally heaved a sigh.

It had already happened twice today. Twice, he had let himself touch Key. And he had a feeling things would not get any better.
