Door 6 - Sungyeol

Dating Door Days (Oneshot Collection of Infinite Dating)

When my seniors told me that college days would be "gone in a daze", I didn't expect it to be literal. At the very least, I would expect to end my freshman orientation week in a more sober state. I couldn't recall anything that happened that night, nor how I manage to stumble against the weight of my-similarly-drunk-friends all the way back to the dorms. We reeked of alcohol and was an unsightly mess. Yet our minds were dancing on cloud nine, too lost to bring ourselves back to senses. I must have left them at some point, probably by the road as they tumbled and fell. Did I laugh then? Probably. I could be mean when I get drunk. Being drunk that night was accidental. I hardly drink, so when my friends tested my limits, it didn't take long for the alcohol to overcome my system. Miraculously, I stayed on my two feet all the way back to the familiar sight of the dormitories. Anything thereafter, I heard from him in time to come.   - ∞ -   I'd been sitting in bed staring at the boy on the floor for a while now. I checked the clock on his desk, and realised it was already 1 in the afternoon. I had slept away my hangover by then, and it had come to a point when I was just waiting for him to wake up so I could interrogate him about what happened the night before.    Meanwhile, I scrutinised his dorm room. He was definitely from my block, since the furnishing was the same. He had pictures of his dog lined on the wall, along with pictures of his water-skiing ventures. There were pictures of him and a bunch of other friends, including a few whom I knew (Myungsoo, Sunggyu). There was a boy who recurred in many of his photos, and judging by their resemblance, it was probably his brother. There were several pictures of him doing crazy or stupid poses in front of monuments I could not recognise. He must be someone who liked to travel. On the shelves, what should have been textbooks and notes were instead replaced by an assortment of computer games in their places.    Finally, the tall figure lying on the floor stirred. It took him a while to process that I was bending over and staring at him from the bed directly overhead. He gave out a loud scream, right into my face.    "Oh, wow, er, you're awake. Wah~ you really scared me there." He clutched his heart and looked slightly displeased.    "Sorry. Uhm, look, it's 1 and I' really just sitting here to know what happened last night." I said firmly and perhaps with an accusatory tone. He must have caught that because he was extremely defensive when he replied, "Yah! You budged into my room yesterday drunk and took my bed while I was in the middle of my game. I lost my game and had to sleep on the floor. I even wrapped you in that blanket even though you reeked of alcohol."    Needless to say, the blanket was indeed now soaked up with my smell from the night before. I felt vaguely apologetic and mumbled, "Sorry."    "Can't hear you." Oh gosh, what a kid.    "I said, I'm sorry."  I said with an angry pout. It was an instinctive thing I did when I was annoyed at someone.    "Hehe." He grinned, satisfied at the apology. "It's alright, it was no big deal. Look at what I've done, I'm quite proud of my makeshift bed to be honest." I peeked over the edge to look at the pile of clothes that might have been inititally rolled up and carefully piled up on the floor. It was terrifyingly messy after he had rolled all around throughout the night, presumably. "The jeans are the hardest, so they go to the bottom. Sweaters are soft so they will be alright for the back and the neck. Ha! I even thought about that. And of course shirts have buttons so they won't be very comfortable would they? I put them near my feet to-"   "-so do you have any clean clothes left for class today?" I interrupted him.    He just stared at me blankly.      - ∞ -   As it turned out, I must have stumbled into Sungyeol's room by pure accident. He was closest to the lift on another floor that I had jabbed by accident, so there I was, on his bed. We became close friends that day after we realised we were both idiots.  I lent him my ex-boyfriend's extra shirt in the closet so that he could make it in time for his afternoon class without doing his laundry, and he paid me back with breakfast for that morning.    He didn't ask me why I had an extra male-size flannel shirt in my closet, and I was grateful for that.    If it wasn't obvious already, Sungyeol's nickname among his friends was Chodingyeol. I used to have a theory that if he invested his creativity for pranks into his studies, he would have been the brainiest scholar in school.    Despite his silliness, Sungyeol was the best son I've seen around. On weekends when people went on trips for a breather, he would return to his family restaurant to help. His family owned a Fried Chicken restaurant that was quite renowned in town and both him and his brother Dayeol would devote their weekends at the restaurant. Sungyeol's bubbly personality that had no limits of silliness meant that he was popular among customers across all ages. The noonas loved him, the dongsaengs looked up to him and always requested for a joke from him, the ahjummas liked a child like him, and even the guys liked him because he was a gamer. Since he was hopeless at cooking or the dishes, this naturally meant that he was permanently the waiter. His height was an advantage too; he could spot customers' raised hands easily.    As his close friend, I was obviously inducted into the free labour team at the restaurant. Sungyeol's parents offered to pay me, but I thought it was awkward, so they paid me with meal installments instead. I had a feeling they were kind to me more so because I was tolerating their son's idiotic behaviour, rather than my help around the place.    Although to be honest, Sungyeol and I were just two peas in the same pod, which was that we were full of nonsense. He would rent stupid comedy movies with a bunch of vulgarities so that we could laugh our asses off in his room as we munched on food. Occasionally he rented Disney movies because he thought classics should be revisited. On my birthday, he crashed the cake into my face "by accident" and gave me an eyepatch that had droopy eyes.    "Because you're a who needs to keep the lights on in your room but you can't sleep well with bright lights." He said before catapulting the gift onto my face. "Ha! Gotcha!"    I used the thing to cover my blush.    Who was taking care of who indeed.    - ∞ -   It was any regular weekday and the restaurant was packed. Dayeol was working at the cashier, and Sungyeol was dashing around serving customers their orders. So naturally when there was a raised hand at the corner, Sungyeol gestured me to go over to take their orders.    Except that I didn't expect to find him sitting there. Or meet him again in such a setting, with me in my  apron and t-shirt emblazoned with the logo of the restaurant.    "You're here." He said with a shocked expression.    "H-hi." My throat was dry. My ex boyfriend Yosep was sitting there with his bunch of friends that were still vaguely familiar to me. I took out my note and hastily took down their orders before making for the kitchen, almost in a sprint. I knew behind me, he would definitely chase after me for answers.    Tossing the order to Dayeol, I rushed to the back of the restaurant where the broom cupboard was and hid in there. It was like revising a long forgotten routine. I had forgotten how it felt like to sob alone in a dark spac

Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Such a cute story, and yes it could have gone really cheesy really quickly, but you wrote it well so I think it's just on the right side of saccharine :) I love how they communicated and got to know each other through these notes, whether it was post its or coasters, and even the lyrics on napkins. I really enjoyed reading the others as well! But this is the one I keep coming back to.
