1. His favorite color is PURPLE.

Kyuhyun was like Pavlov’s dog; every time he saw the color purple he would find himself smiling in some dopey way...which was weird because he didn’t even like purple. Purple was more of a Ryeowook thing. His friend owned a purple backpack, a purple phone, purple pencils, purple plushies, and purple folders in various shades of purple for each subject. Hell, he even dressed as Fear last Halloween for the purple face paint. Kyuhyun had come to associate everything purple with Ryeowook.

Though...now that he thought about it, maybe he smiled at purple because somewhere in his mind, he was really smiling at Ryeowook.

2. He’s afraid of dogs (but just a little bit).

(No, actually a lot; keep those hell beasts away from him.)

“Ryeowook, it’s just a sign!” Kyuhyun pushed—like, literally stood behind him and pushed—the older one towards the fence with the BEWARE OF DOG sign on it.

“I’m not scared of the sign; I’m scared of what the sign implies!” Ryeowook clung to—like actually grabbed onto and half-hugged—the tree he stood next to in order to avoid being pushed.

“It doesn’t imply anything,” Kyuhyun groaned. “It’s just a joke from a cartoon. I’ve walked past this house a thousand times and I haven’t heard so much as a bark!” He finally backed off from the shorter.

“Look, Ryeong,” Kyuhyun said. “I know big dogs are scary. You know I’m not a fan of them either. But this is a plastic sign. You can walk past a sign, can’t you?”

“I don’t know…”

“Look, there’s even a fence to protect you for when that big bad imaginary dog attacks.” He gestured grandly at the wooden fence.

“That’s not funny.”

“Oh, come on, Ryeong,” Kyuhyun said. “There’s no dog. I swear on my grandmother’s cookies you can walk past this sign without—”

An explosive series of barks and sharp claws on wood interrupted him. The sound was like the deafening thunder of pain and fear.

When the screaming died down, Kyuhyun found himself hugging—as in full body wraparound—Ryeowook like a terrified mama’s boy. Which he technically was but that was beside the point.

Ryeowook looked at him. “You were saying?”

3. He has glasses (-0-0-) but wears contacts. Usually.

“Oh my gosh, it’s the Boy Who Lived!”

“Can I touch your lightning scar?”

“How’s the wife? Still a redhead?”

“Shut up,” a four-eyed Ryeowook said, face burning flaming as he set down his lunch tray.

Eunhyuk, Donghae, and Kyuhyun all gasped in unison.

“He said ‘shut up.’ He is as sassy as they say!” Eunhyuk’s eyes lit up with glee.

“You know, Harry, I always did like your style.” Kyuhyun flicked Ryeowook’s round, black-framed glasses. “The muggle look isn’t your thing though. Where’re your wizard robes?”

“I hate you all,” Ryeowook informed them.

“Can you show us a magic trick? Say something Latin!” Donghae bounced up and down in his seat.

"Would you stop with the lookalike jokes!" Ryeowook cried. “Harry Potter isn’t even Asian!”

 Eunhyuk, Donghae, and Kyuhyun all gasped again.

“Harry, that’s so racist!”  Kyuhyun said. “I know you’re pretty isolated up in Hogwarts but please, have some respect for other cultures.”

Ryeowook buried his head in his arms. “I will never lose my contacts again.”

4. He truly cares for everyone.

Kyuhyun did not like this whole “move to a new classroom for each class” mentality of America. In five seconds after class ended, the whole class had drained out of the room—even the teacher!—leaving him stuck alone in his desk. With his broken leg restricting all knee movement, Kyuhyun stretched as hard as he could to reach his fallen books. It didn’t work.

His first day in a new school and already he was struggling. All his English classes from Korea failed to prepare him for the bizarre colloquialisms in his new hometown, and getting hit with a car last week really hadn’t helped him fit in.

Another bell rang. Kyuhyun gasped. Late already?! Who gave their students such little time to run across the building? With renewed effort he reached for his books when suddenly, they rose, though not by his hand.

Kyuhyun looked up to see a chubby, East Asian boy with round glasses looking down at him. His first thought, naturally, was, “He’s going to laugh and hit me with my own book.”

“Are you okay?” the boy asked.

“Uh…” Kyuhyun quickly stood himself up. He stumbled. “…yes. I am okay.”

 “Do you have anyone to help you with your books and stuff?” the boy asked.

Was this a threat? Kyuhyun leaned backwards. “No?”

The boy tilted his head. “That’s weird. The school usually assigns someone to help students with broken legs. Here,” He picked up the rest of Kyuhyun’s stuff, “What’s your next class? I don’t have one so I can walk you there.”

A great relief filled Kyuhyun. This boy was here to help. “Chemistry. With Lee,” he said. 

“Cool.” The boy smiled. “My name’s Ryeowook, by the way,” he said as they started out the classroom.

“Kyuhyun.”

“Neat name, are you new this year?” Ryeowook walked slowly so Kyuhyun on crutches could keep up with him in the hallways.

“Yes, my family just moved here from South Korea.”

“Really?” Ryeowook asked. “That’s so cool!” He then proceeded to say something which sounded eerily like Korean but could have easily been Klingon.

“Uh, what?” Kyuhyun asked.

Ryeowook smiled sheepishly. “I’m Korean too. I was adopted by a Chinese-American couple when I was two though, so aside from my birth name, my Korean-ness is spotty.”

“Ah, well, at least you still have East Asian influences,” Kyuhyun said in Mandarin. “I learned Chinese at my old school,” he explained to Ryeowook’s surprised look.

“Wow,” the other boy said, wide-eyed. “I’m learning Spanish.”

The chatted for the rest of the walk which was surprisingly long and far. Kyuhyun wasn’t complaining though. (Okay, maybe a little because the crutches hurt but not a lot.) Ryeowook was a nice conversationalist, and he didn't point and laugh when Kyuhyun didn't understand a slang word. 

By the time they reached the chemistry classroom, Kyuhyun was sure he was at least ten minutes late and therefore as counted absent for the period, but he stopped to thank Ryeowook anyways.

“Of course!” Ryeowook said. “What do you have after this? Maybe we can talk to the office and get me a pass so I can be your official aide.”

“I have lunch.”

“Perfect.” Ryeowook grinned.

After getting him an aide pass during lunch, Ryeowook introduced Kyuhyun to his group of friends (Eunhyuk, Donghae, and Sungmin), and gave him a run-through of the school. Eunhyuk taught him all the English sayings he would need for high school and some coded curse words to throw off the teachers (“Instead of ‘’ say ‘butthole.’ Mr. Davids will give you a sticker”), and Sungmin gave him some kimchi which Kyuhyun hadn’t had all week. Before walking him to his next class, Ryeowook gave Kyuhyun his number and promised to text him that night.

“You can help me with my Korean!” he chirped. “I’m way better at writing Hangul than speaking it.”

When Kyuhyun went home that day, he did it on crutches with a limp, but he felt like he was flying.
