Beautiful Monster

The scars had multiplied. It had started with the stab wound on her stomach and the knife slash across her face. Then came the cigarette burns on her arms and the knife wounds that would follow. After came the lashes that crisscrossed over her back, healing in jagged lines across her back. And lastly, the perfectly parallel lines that would make their way up her wrists. She was the only one that saw them, so carefully covered during the day, now stark in the remaining daylight. It would be a new day tomorrow. A new school, new teachers and new bullies. Jaerin strode into the courtyard, ignoring the harsh glares and whispers sent her way. They all knew who she was now. The crowd parted as she approached, those closest scrambled away, clutching at their friends desperately as if pleading to be saved from her. The monster. The scar faced creature that had murdered her parents in cold blood. That's what they thought of her now. No longer was she the cheerful girl, friend to the privileged and the poor. No. Those days were long gone. She passed easily through the courtyard, not caring of their thoughts towards her. Not a glance to the girl who had been pushed in front of her. Once she would have stopped, would have helped her up. But that girl was gone. Killed along with her hopes and dreams. Slaughtered. And it was all because of her parents. They say that every story starts with their parents. Those born to rich parents grow up rich. Those born to poor parents grow up poor. And those born to monsters hiding behind masks, sometimes they didn't even have stories, just there one moment and gone the next. Just like I will be one day. She made her way through the twisting hallways remembering her first day of school in this wretched country. "Class, this is Kim Jaerin, she will be joining us for the rest of the year." Her peers had welcomed her with open arms and curiosity though they quickly learned not to ask about her scar. The only answer they received was that she got it the same day her parents died.
