The three of them didn’t stay together long; Zoie had to be at the Mission campus for her next class. Skye and Naiara were left to entertain one another – Naiara didn’t have anywhere to go for a couple hours – so Naiara opted to accompany Skye to the Apple store on Chestnut Street in Cow Hollow, to get the graduation present for Kaito’s little brother.
There was traffic on Divisadero Street; Naiara settled into the driver’s seat of her car, resting her head back on the headrest as she inched down the street toward the red light.
“You’re really going to spend $2,000 on a laptop for that boy?” she inquired after a moment.
“Well, yeah,” Skye answered after a while. “I mean he’s graduating at the top of his class so he’s earned it, and I haven’t spent any of the money I got from Kire Na, or the advance from the anime, except for bills and student loans.”
“Hey, it’s your money. I’m just saying, I’m with Kaito; he would’ve been just fine with a Dell.” Skye laughed a little, shaking her head in Naiara’s peripheral vision. They continued onward, past Geary Boulevard.
“So you seemed kind of testy back there at the restaurant,” Skye began after a moment; Naiara knew she would bring it up sooner or later. “Is everything okay?”
“Why wouldn’t everything be okay?”
“You almost bit Zoie’s head off.” Naiara sighed, hitting her hand against the steering wheel lightly. “You said something about things messing up between you and Matthew…”
