Oasis

I opened my eyes, adjusting to the sudden brightness. While stretching my arms, I rolled to my right side and my beautiful wife came into view. I could only smile at how perfect my life had been since she entered the picture.

“Taengoo, you know that staring is rude, don’t you?” she suddenly remarked, eyes still closed. I could only chuckle at her.

“What’s the problem with staring at what’s mine?” I playfully asked her, pulling her into a hug and smelling her neck. “What do you even do at night that you are so fragrant in the morning?” I continued, breathing out.

“Stop that, it tickles!” she retorted, gently pushing my face away.

“Ouch!” I feigned being hurt. “You could be more gentle you know?” I told her, while caressing my supposed-to-be-hurt face. Guilt crept upon her face. Success!

“Omo! I’m so sorry dear. Did I hurt you?” she sweetly asked, giving me kisses all over my face.

I only grinned at her and pecked her cheeks. “Just kidding!” then I bolted out the bed.

“Yah!” she glared at me, then she reached her arms out. “Pull me up, I don’t want to put pressure on my stomach.” She said, which made me smile widely and go to her then kiss her 8-month-old stomach.

“How’s our baby?” I asked, her stomach. “Do you feel sick Sica?” I asked my wife while pulling her up, but she replied with a smile.

“I’m fine.” She said and fixed my bed hair. “By the way, good morning” she said and kissed my lips. This brought a huge grin on my face. “I love you”

“Good morning too dear” I greeted her back. “And of course I love you too.” I said and pulled her toward the door.

We headed to the kitchen hand in hand.

“Go and take a bath, Taengoo, I’ll prepare breakfast. We don’t want you going to work late do we?” Jessica said while she puts on a pink apron. Really, why am I so lucky?

“Yes ma’am!” I exclaimed, saluting her. “Don’t burn anything okay?” I reminded her as I took my bath towel.

“Rude!” she retorted. “I know full well the basics of cooking you know? I won’t repeat my teenage mistakes anymore!” she said with a pout.

“Haha, yes, I know that, love.”

“How’s work?” Jessica asked as she brought a spoonful of bacon on . Really, are the contents of her tummy a baby or food?
I gulped down the food on my mouth before answering her. “Going good, I have enough evidence against that yakuza group now. Now it only rests upon my delivery.”

She smiled sweetly at me. “Love, you know, and I know that you’re the best lawyer in town.” She stated with a grin. “Being nervous is so unlike you” then she reached out for my hand. “No matter what happens, you know I’m here for you, right?” Really, I’m so lucky.

“I’m going now.” I said, encircling my arms around her waist then kissing her. “Take care okay?” I told her with worry while she’s just smiling at me. “Call me if there’s a problem. Even small pangs will matter. So just-“ she shut me up with a long kiss. “What is that for?”

“It’s because you’re too serious. Nothing will happen, Taengoo. Now go and win that case!” she hit me on the shoulder lightly. I could only smile upon her cuteness.

“Yes yes. I’ll be going now for real.” I said in defeat then grabbing my bag. “Take care of mommy, okay?” I spoke, my face on level with Jessica’s stomach, and kissing it.

I turned to leave but Jessica called me. “Taeyeon-ah” she said. “I love you” then she smiled sweetly which I reciprocated.

“I love you too.” Then I opened the door, closing it and catching a glimpse of my beloved wife.

“Taeyeon!” someone called me before leaving the court’s premises.

I turned around and saw Tiffany. “Hey Tiff” I greeted her, stopping on my tracks.

“You breezed through that didn’t you?” she remarked.

“Did I?” I asked, completely clueless.

Tiffany donned her poker face on. “Of course you did! And we should celebrate!” she exclaimed, clinging on to me. I let her be since I’m already used to how she is.

“You know I can’t Tiff” I declined. “I have my family waiting for me”

formed an O then her eye smile appeared. “Yeeees. I know, Miss whipped Taeyeon. I’ll let you go for now. But you should promise to hang out once your baby is born okay?” she said, walking away. “You can’t back out Tae!” she said, waving her arm.

I opened my eyes, adjusting to the sudden brightness. While stretching my arms, I rolled to my right side which is empty. I lay my arm on my right side, gently caressing the sheets.

I groggily got up, then fixed my bed hair. I looked at myself in the mirror, maybe I should cut my hair. It’s been a year since I did so anyway.

I put on a pink apron and cooked breakfast. I sat and started eating alone. It’s quiet. Deafening.

“I’m leaving!” I said, looking back to a dark, empty house. I could only smile bitterly before grabbing my bag and heading out.

“Ahjumma, a bouquet of white roses please.” I politely asked the saleslady. “Thank you” I said, grabbing my wallet and paying her.

“Thank you for your patronage!”

I breathed in, this place surely has clean air, doesn’t it Jessica? I thought of this as I put the bouquet in front of a grave. Then I proceeded to sit down.

“Hey love, how are you?” I asked her, but of course there’s no reply. “Is Soyeon giving you headaches?” I asked, tears now forming on my eyes. “I miss you, you know?” I declared, tears now streaming down my face. “You went to soon, leaving me.” I took a deep breath. “But time really does fly by. It’s already been a year since that incident isn’t it?” I continued, remembering the bloody floor and the lifeless body which welcomed me home on that night.

“I thought of following the two of you there, but I guess I lack the courage to face your wrath if you knew I killed myself.” I chuckled. Imagining her angry face. “But I will prefer that over being alone.” That came as a whisper. “You know what? The reason I’m alive right now is because those bastards are still free. How ironic, I can solve the cases of other people without hardships but I can’t do that now.” I traced their names with a sad smile. “I miss you. Soyeon would have been crawling around by now. I wonder how she looks like? You are so unfair, leaving without showing me our child.” I know that I’m now sobbing like a mad man. But I badly miss them.

“Hey, Sica” I started, I’m now a lot calmer. “Wait for me okay? I’m coming, but I doubt it will be anytime soon. But don’t worry, I promise.” I stood up. “I gotta go now love. Work is waiting. I’ll see you some other time okay? I love you, dear.”
