The young mother softly brushed the hair out her child’s face, as she closed that night’s bedtime story. Looking slightly distressed as his mother moved away from placing a warm, loved filled peck on his forehead, the boy no more than six years old, looked up desperately for answers to a question that was not all that unanticipated by the mother who recognized the child’s unyielding curiosity, as it was a trait that she had also possessed.

“Mother, why is it that humans used to hunt us merpeople? Did we do something that made them hate us? Have they forgiven us?”

Even though most would be distressed to respond to a question whose answers would surely be laced with disheartening and dark themes, especially for a six year old, the mother smiled brightly at her only child. She smiled that this child, her child, was her spitting image. She could see that his ignorance to the situation was obviously bothering him, so she was more than happy to oblige and answered truthfully.

“No darling, they didn’t hate us, in fact the reason why they hunted our kind was because they wanted something from us.”

“If they wanted something why didn’t they just ask? How would they get something by killing us?”
