Fate of Souls

COUNTDOWN: 7 DAYS TO FULL MOON #3

Kai’s enthusiasm was infectious. His foot had been jiggling in his chair all morning, his hands had been rubbing anxiously against the denim of his jeans, his eyes had been flickering everywhere like a madman. But his smile, that had been pretty constant. And wolves, as attuned to each other as they were, were slowly becoming the same way. Chanyeol and Baehyun fell into step fairly easily, but even Kris could be seen tapping his foot every now and then.

And the person who had Kai’s magic running in her veins was no different. She hadn’t even noticed the way she and Kai were moving in sync, heads turning in identical motions to grin as a surprised looking D.O. walked through the door.

“What’s going on?” He asked cautiously, placing his gloves down on the entryway table and looking between the two excited people watching him.

“We’re going to try magic again!” the words practically tumbled out of Kai’s mouth with the speed he said them.

D.O.’s owl eyes widened as he looked at Kita, “you think it’s safe?”

She nodded excitedly, “I’m fairly confident I’ve got it under control now. And Kai’s a lot better at recognising magical currents so I don’t see why not.”

“I can feel her magic even though its not a full moon, look, we’re not even touching.” He held up his hands as if that was necessary proof, even though the two were on opposite sides of the couch.

Originally, Kita had considered that he could feel her magic because she’d grown better at controlling it, but under brief inspection it was obvious that wasn’t the case. Her magic levels had grown. Substantially. Like a muscle that had been unused her magic had been atrophied, but now it was flexed and flowing at all times. A brief look at Kai showed that he was the same way. Their magic was growing, both alone and together, and she figured they needed to get a handle on controlling it before things got out of hand.

So D.O. tentatively followed them outside into the back garden, sitting on the back porch as he watched Kita walk around the garden, digging her toe in the dirt every now and then as if testing it, until she seemed satisfied and sat down on her knees.

Kai had been following her, an amused light in his eyes, an enjoyment that D.O. hadn’t seen in a long time. He and Kai had been close for a long time, Kai was the wolf he was closest to in this whole pack. It pained D.O. to see the pain his packbrother went through every full moon, the confusion he felt, the lonliness and self-hatred as if he was more of a monster than the rest of them.

D.O. Had been there during Kai’s low point, he still remembered the emptiness of his eyes and the rawness of his voice as he’d yelled at them. “You were all human before this, I was born a monster!”

They’d made it through, but every full moon had taken Kai back to that dark place, until now. It was plain as day that Kita was helping him, even if the two of them were too dense to see it. Kai could spout excuses about escaping headaches and Kita could riddle off nonsense about magical currents, but D.O. could see past that. Those two needed one another. Two people cast out from their homes, lost in a world much bigger than them, they deserved one another. They just couldn’t see it yet.

D.O. watched as Kai wordlessly slipped his hands under Kita’s shirt, his palms flattening on her lower back. He said something to the Fey and she smiled over her shoulder, giving him a small laugh before looking back to the dirt. But Kai was still looking at her, watching her with a guarded adoration, as if he was afraid to even confront the idea, the possibility of what it could be.

D.O.’s attention was caught then, by Kita’s hand’s as they drew a circle in the dirt, pulling up stray strands of grass that were in the way. She lay her hands flat, outlining her marks, and took a deep breath. Kai breathed with her, their bodies moving in sync.

Ok. I’ve got this, Kita thought, breathing deeply and feeling Kai do the same. Use both of us this time, not just my magic. Gather it in Kai and then move it through. Don’t pull it, but move with it.

Got it.

She breathed again,

She felt a strand of her magic and floated along with it, over her shoulder and down her spine until it reached her lower back where it turned into Kai’s magic streams. Again, Kita waited until the magic was at his ribs before slowing it, pulling it back with everything she had, watching a mixture of Kai’s magic and her own build up behind it like a magical dam.

And then she let go, feeling it rush forward like a wave, into Kai’s other arm then her back then down to her right hand –

D.O. had heard about the glowing, but he’d never actually seen it. It was still a shock now, to see the way her arm lit up like a miniature sun, moving over her skin like a snake before it buried in the ground, lighting up for a hanging moment more before dimming.

Was that it?

Kita opened her eyes, watching in disbelief as a little flower grew before her eyes, finally opening its petals to reveal the same wintery blue streaks as the last one. But this flower, this was not the same weak little thing as last time, this flower had vitality, this flower was alive.

“we did it.” She whispered, “we actually did it”

She felt Kai’s hands slip as he kneeled up to look over her shoulder. “Did we just-” His hands moved completely before his whole arms wrapped around her shoulders from behind, “we made a flower! And no one’s unconscious!”

Kita laughed along with him, the two of them loosing their balance in their excitement, landing in a heap on the grass beside them.

D.O. smiled, seeing the two of them try to get back up in their tangle of limbs. A smile that ended quickly as something dark whispered over his heart.

He knew that feeling.

A wolf’s bloodlust is not easily forgotten.

But he wasn’t, he hadn’t even fallen ill at the last full moon-. He looked up at Kai, noticing the way his fingers were lingering on Kita’s shoulder as he brushed her hair away, hovering in a way different than before.

D.O. had always been closest to Kai, he’d always been the first to notice when Kai was upset. But this was back in their pack days, when they transformed every full moon, when their wolf senses were at their best. They didn’t feel this connection now, well, until now.

Everything was getting murky, more confusing, but one thing was clear.

Kai’s wolf was back.

D.O. could only hope it wouldn’t make an appearance at the next full moon.

Chapter 31: I miss this story. The slow burn romance is done well but I'm honestly so invested in the mysteries around the magic. Every now and then I'll remember this story exists and pop back to read it and see if there are any updates.

Chapter 31: The relationship in this story is so well done, honestly. And somehow, even though there isnt much 'on screen' interaction, its also easy to see her relationships with the pack growing and evolving. All in all it makes for a really good story with one of the best mixtures of fluff, romance, action, adventure and character development ive seen in a long time. Also, its really good to see that you have rules and stuff about how magic works cause otherwise itjust ends up being the solution for everything and anything when it makes no sense. So yeah, super keen for the next chapters

Chapter 31: Such fluff lol I didn't expect the chapter to end that way. It was hard not to squeal or smile whenever they were being cute together! Loved every moment of this chapter, especially the part where Jongin said he wanted to spend the day with her all to himself. Ugh I'm trash. But low key, it hurt, too, because it feels like he's so scared that he might actually hurt her. It just made me feel like he was saying goodbye almost TT TT which I know he isn't but Jongin just–he's so sweet. And Kita, too. Her character is amazing and she's adorable. to be honest, I hadn't expected Jongin to do that. Even though they were in a jewelry store, I hadn't expected Jongin to buy her a silver ring. Even up until the moment, the saleswoman put it on her finger, I hadn't expected it lol until Jongin explained why she needed it. If I were Kita, I'd be upset, too, but like her, I understand where Jongin's coming from, too. orz so torn because they're so dense, but they're cluelessness makes it cute but also frustrating and ugh. Sadly, I love it lol

Thank you so much for updating such a fluffy chapter! <33333333

Just finished reading all 30 chapters and I have to say, I love this story! I'm a er for fantasy and werewolves and anything that is remotely similar to Teen Wolf lol but also, I'm just trash for Jongin. No shame in being trash lol I love being trash. But anyways, I really love this story and how it's unfolding! Everything is great so far and I love the relationship between Kitaria and Jongin. Everything is so beautiful. When I got to the part where she managed to open the door to the library, and the wolves couldn't get through, I thought Jongin would pull her aside and make her promise him that she'd never hide in there away from him. But I like angsty moments of avoidance like that lol Anyways, Jongin's cute lol like when he was upset that she was avoiding him and he was eating his sandwich. Cute lol

Anyways, thanks for writing such an amazing story! <3333333
