013 [BONUS]
Fate of SoulsKyungsoo had always been a perceptive guy. Somehow he always found himself in the background of where important things were going on. Even if nothing was happening, his owl-like eyes were always on the lookout. Like when Kai had injured his waist, Kungsoo had been the first one to notice. Or when Baekhyun was trying to sneak off to avoid doing work, or when Sehun was lying about how much food he had stashed in his room.
So when the Fey had first shown up and fellow members of his pack were complaining amongst themselves, he’d kept his eyes trained on the newcomer. Even before he saw her tapered ears or her willowy frame or her tiny hands, he saw her frantic eyes and tense shoulders. She was terrified, plain and simple. When her had left her and walked back into the forest, Kyungsoo had seen the poor girls longing stare and her desire to go with them. He’d seen her frame shift when Kris approached her, head bowing in an unintentional motive of submission. At least, Kyungsoo assumed it was unintentional, she didn’t really seem to know what she was doing around wolves.
She’d been more at ease after Suho had spoken to her, but Suho was a fairly relaxing guy when he wanted to be, and when he wasn’t being an overprotective mother hen. Not that D.O. could say anything in that department.
The next few days she’d been so terrified, so overwhelmed, that even Chanyeol had noticed. Kris had done nothing to help the situation, putting on his ‘scary Alpha’ mode to keep up appearances and a sense of authority around her. Only when Kris left to talk to the other packs did Kyungsoo notice Kita beginning to relax, especially around Xiumin and Luhan. She’d slowly began replying to people in more than frightened glances or one word answers. Slowly but surely, she was opening up.
So that was probably what made Kyungsoo so curious about what made Kai different. As far as he could tell, Kai hadn’t done anything different than the rest of them. Kyungsoo had gone as far as to ask Kai why she treated him differently, why she seemed to go out of her way to remain distant from him, but the younger boy had no idea.
Then, a fateful day had happened. The day of Kita’s first patrol with Kai.
As soon as Kyungsoo had come back he knew he’d missed something important. Kai seemed the same as always, if only a little confused about why Kita had finally decided to treat him like she treated all the others. But that’s because Kai wasn’t the most perceptive of wolves.
Kyungsoo could tell that something had motivated her, there was a driven determination in her eyes every time she looked at Kai. Something had happened, something had changed, if only he could figure out what.
Days had passed, nothing of interest worth watching other than Kita slowly growing used to Kai’s company. The determined look was still there but now it was accompanied by something else, familiarity? Comfort? Whatever it was, Kai seemed to have no idea it was there.
Then Kyungsoo couldn’t believe his luck, another fateful day. The day the Leaf had arrived. If he’d thought Kita was terrified upon first meeting the pack, this was no comparison to when she’d realised what was going on. The colour had faded from her skin, her fingers had betrayed her in the slightest tremble, her breath had caught in . He’d been there to steady her when she wavered, already seeing that this was something far beyond what his pack would understand right now, but knowing that this meant the world to Kita.
And then, she’d asked for Kai. Kai. Even Kyungsoo, with all of his people-watching, had been shocked. But his well-practiced skills had been put to good use when Kai had pulled Kita in for a hug, seeing the way her body eased and that look of comfort laced underneath her ebbing fear.
Kai of course, was still utterly confused, but Kyungsoo had no explanation for him. Kita herself didn’t seem to have an explanation, looking somehow confused and conflicted at the same time. Kyungsoo had been cautious, what could Kita possibly have to feel conflicted about? Was she using Kai? Was he in trouble?
But when Kyungsoo had looked into the room later to check up on them, he had nothing in him but a chuckle. They had both been sat against the wall, leaning on one another, their eyes closed softly in sleep. It was the most relaxed he’d ever seen Kita, but strangely, he could say the same about Kai.
If Kyungsoo had to pick a moment that he’d set his ‘Kaita’ ship-a-sail, that would be it.
