[HIATUS] Little Colorful Butterfly
“You know what this is called?” asks Jinyoung gently to JIyeon, who’s sitting next to him. Opposite in their direction is the annoyed, lonely L. Joe. Do these two lovebirds have got to have date in his house? Really?
“Yes I do,” she answers as she looks at him. With a natural smile, she says, “This is the blastocyst stage; the stage where the fertilised egg is implanted on the uterine wall. It has about 100 cells.”
“Exactly,” Jinyoung says, smiling at her as well. L. Joe is already making weird faces when them two are in the middle of shooting love gaze over at each other.
“Do we have to know how a baby is produced?” L. Joe butts in. “Isn’t it good enough to know how to make one.”
“L. Joe,” Jinyoung utters through his clenching teeth, looking at him with a derp look. “Would you please?”
“But this topic is preposterous. Let’s cover another sensible chapter, shall we?”
“Okay, what topic is it?” Jinyoung gives in to his friend. Gee, L. Joe sometime could be a pain in the neck.
“I don’t know,” he shrugs as he leafs through his thick book and just randomly stops at any page. “This.” He points at a snake-looking creature. “What about this organism? Look, it says this thing, I don’t know what this weirdo is called, is the smallest cell in the male body. Hmm, I wonder why it doesn’t mention female as well.”
“That’s probably because female don’t have ,” Jiyeon retorts at him, unbelievingly.
Jinyoung is holding back his laughter while L. Joe, with his eyes wide, leafs through another page again. Okay. His pride is nowhere now.
“Let’s just memorize what all the biological organisms are called, okay? I know that would be a big help to someone,” Jiyeon adds some more, giving L. Joe a sharp glance.
“Okay.” Jinyoung couldn’t agree more.
“Jiyeon, what are you even doing here when you already a Biology smarty-pants?”
That’s when Jinyoung sends L. Joe a warning gaze to his best friend and signals to him that if he crosses the line, L. Joe’s not gonna like the outcome.
L. Joe clears his throat, understanding what Jinyoung is trying to tell him. “I mean, you don’t seem to have problems revising Biology on your own. Why- do you come here?” Okay, he just doesn’t know how to put it.
“Jinyoung wanted me to.”
“Do you want to go?”
“Invitedly, I do.”
“I don’t think the word ‘invitedly’ is grammatically correct.”
“I didn’t know you’re such an English smarty-pants.”
“Even primary kids know the ‘invitedly’ is like, invalid.”
“Hurtful,” she whines. She then narrows her eyes and fires back, saying, “AND BESIDES, I HAVE EVERY RIGHT IN THE WORLD TO USE ANY WORD I WANT WITHOUT PEOPLE LIKE YOU BOTHERING TO CORRECT ME.”
Jinyoung is craning his neck from left to right, from Jiyeon to L. Joe and back to Jiyeon again when she talks back to him directly in his face. He is surprised. Who knows Jiyeon has that kind of side to her.
“Can we please, not argue and focus on the study right now.” Jinyoung is looking at them two as Jiyeon and L. Joe are holding back each other’s meaningful passionate eyes. The passion of not losing alright.
DING DONG; and those three suddenly shut their mouths.
“Is your dad home?” Jiyeon asks, starting to feel anxious. L. Joe shakes at his head as one of his brows come up in a perfect arc over his eye.
“I don’t think so. It’s only 5.00. p.m.. He won’t be home unless it’s 8.30 p.m. or something and he never calls it a day early.”
DING DONG. DING DONG. DING DONG. DING DONG. Whoever that guest is, he is getting impatient.
“Well, aren’t you gonna get that?” She asks again.
With much annoyance and laziness, L. Joe gets up reluctantly. “Who are you? My mother?”
“Grow up!” She snorts.
“You told me that earlier, grandma. Did you forget that?”” He talks back, but already walking to get the door.
“- ” Jiyeon quickly turns to her right to find how ed up Jinyoung’s expression is. Uh oh!
“What was that all about?” Jinyoung’s tone is slightly bitter.
She tightens , hey eyes balls going wild while her brains is trying to come up with some excuse. “So you wanna explain again how do work?”
“What?”
If she has a hand-grenade with her right that instant, she would have pulled out the key and swallowed the grenade herself. “I mean, lets not talk until L. Joe gets back here.” She is starting to get nervous and no matter how much she wishes to run away, her fat is stuck on the damn chair.
“What’s up losers!” Hoya exclaims once he gets close to the study table, with L. Joe’s arm wrapped around his neck. Jiyeon and Jinyoung are looking at him, astonished. “And to my lady, Jiyeon, how are you doin’?” He then winks at her. “I’m Hoya, in charge of normality.”
“Jiyeon.” She smiles back at him. “Normality?”
“I know. I’m the most normal person if you were to pick any one of us. But, scrap that. You know, Jinyoung told me a lot about you. But L. Joe doesn’t seem to enlighten every time he hears your name. So, it’s kinda crazy to have you here actually. But I mean no harm. I like you.”
L. Joe jokingly shoves Hoya, but his face is far from looking alright. “Don’t do that, Hoya,” he bursts out laughing, mostly to hide his humiliation. “Do you even value your life right now?” He asks, grabbing Hoya by his collar.
Hoya does nothing but laughs at his best friend. L. Joe could look realy funny when he’s embarrassed. They both are laughing so hard that Jiyeon unconsciously starts to laugh a little. Jiyeon who’s had her eyes on Hoya suddenly fixes her gaze over to laughing L. Joe and she is stunned by the looks of his laughter. L. Joe looks really adorable when he laughs, especially when he’s not faking it. She misses that lively and loud laughter.
She then feels a shockwave go through her body and her heart literally skips a beat when L. Joe suddenly looks back at her, before he quickly changes his gaze over to Hoya the moment their eyes meet.
“Hey, I didn’t know you would put aside your pride and come over?” Jinyoung stands up to greet and hug his buddy and his voice drags her back to reality, a reality where things in her imagination don’t come true.
“For my buds’ sake, why wouldn’t I be?” Hoya sounds genuinely glad one the hug is broken. “And besides, I got complains from our playboy over here,” Hoya then nudges L. Joe in his rib, saying, “He complains of suffocating from ~love~ air and that he needs a company, badly.”
“You dim-wit!” Shouts L. Joe, looking all red in his face before he quickly shoves Hoya real hard and those two, jokingly, are at each other’s throat, again.
Jiyeon gets close to Jinyoung to whisper something. “He looks normal. But-”
“He’s far from being normal. I know.” He then looks in her eyes seriously. “He’s got a loosing screw in his system.”
“Jinyoung!” She shoves him and chuckles. “That’s not a nice thing to say about your best friend. He may not be normal, but c’mon, a loosing screw? You’re just being mean.”
Jinyoung smiles broad when he watches her giggling with what he just said. How much he is drawn to her.
“Okay, now guys,” Jinyoung voices out. “Let’s not stray afar from our first intention when we got here.”
“What intention?” Hoya asks, looking clueless.
“Oh yeah.” L. Joe gets back to his seat. “We were in the middle of studying Biology before you came.”
“WHAADT?” Hoya has his eyes wide open. “I didn’t know I came here to study with you guys. I even thought we could order some pizza and talk about stuffs-”
“What we’re gonna have pizza instead of doing some revision?” L. Joe cuts abruptly. “Do you honestly think that we would still have time to order pizza and talk about unimportant stuffs when the Biology test is just right ahead of us? Are you serious Hoya? Have you ever spared some thought of building a bright future? Don’t you wanna make your parents proud of you when you walk up that stage and take all the credits for your hard work?
“BUILDING A BRIGHT FUTURE?” Hoya mumbles under his breathe. That does it. He doesn’t wanna live in this planet anymore.
Every single one in the rooms has their eyes fully focused on L. Joe. They all share this one unpleasant feeling. What the is wrong with L. Joe?
There is an awkward silence before the room erupts in laughter. The entire room literally cracks upon hearing what L. Joe says.
“Seriously can we have some pizza?” Jiyeon interrupts and her laughter fades instantly when says that. The three guys seem nonplussed. “I’m honestly famished I could eat a friggin’ whale all by myself right now.” She looks completely innocent when those words come out smoothly from her lips.
“Okay,” Jinyoung manages to look calm. “Eating some pizza doesn’t deteriorate out brain system.”
“Thank you,” she smiles at him. She lowers her head, feeling ashamed as she rubs against her tummy. But she couldn’t help it.
“L. Joe,” Hoya calls for him. “When you talked about that bright future thingy, were you like, possessed when that happened?”
“I was.”
Then the room bursts out laughing, again.
