The darkness swallowed up the vibrant sky in a blanket of pure black. Crickets hidden under a field of smooth cut grass. Misty clouds buried the moon's glow, dimming the entire city. The drumming of rain, coating everything in its cold wetness. The groans of a human echoed in the night, as a reaper swooned in closer. 

"P-pick up."

"Your called has been forwarded to an autom-" Her finger instantly found the end button, having pressed it countless of times in an attempt to reach him. She continued limping with her head bent down and her hair shielding her face. She was losing track of time, unaware of how long it had been. Before taking another step, her body took its toll on her weak legs as she crumpled to the ground, her phone airborne before it landed away in front of her. The cold asphalt stung her scratched up cheeks and sent chills down her spine, but there was no will left in her to get up. Remaining motionless and sprawled against the ground was her immediate reaction. Then she clutched her left waist, the acute pain surging farther around. Her eyes tightened together, tears beading across her lids. She clenched her teeth to stifle a groan that almost slipped off her tongue. Slowly opening her eyes, the view of the house in front of her was distorted, blurred at the sides and almost faint. I'm here. Her vision must have been deceived since two images were overlapping similarly to a kaleidoscope. Just two steps. Its entrance, the porch that once was hospitable now seemed to be repelling any memory of the girl; shielding itself and the owner from her looming darkness. It became a habit for her to rehash happiness when she thought about it. Memories echoed in her soul, becoming a constant reminder like an alarm. But it was only in her head. The distant chipped bricks now became the stepping-stones to her own salvation. Desperately, she extended her arm outwards to the phone; her fingers stiffly trembling for any grasp. The phone remained untouched, refusing to be given up and used for her own down bringing. I have to. Thoughts were in combat which each other, preventing her from making any regretful choices. She knew the unforgiving consequences; but at this point, her mind was set, and there was no going back. Not this time. Inhaling deeply, she struggled to lift herself only to drop back down, bringing the excruciating pain along with her.
