Chances

Speaking Silences

AN: Well, I have got somethings to clear out first before you read the chapter.

I dunno if you have noticed or not but I follow a pattern in chapters like 2 Sehun, 2 Jongin and so, on. So, I'm really sorry if its confusing for people.

And secondly, I will clear out the ages of the characters

Sehun- 21 (as said in Chap 1 that he tried 3 times to get through the University- Criminal Law)

Jongin- 22 (He is a year older to Sehun and in last year of Uni- Dance major)

Suzy- 19 (2nd year in Kyunghee Academy- Literature)

Jessica- 18 (Freshman at SNU- Foreign Studies)

With that said...Happy reading^^

“It is better to live your own destiny imperfectly than to live an imitation of somebody else's life with perfection.”

While entering the city of chances and dreams four years ago, Jongin had promised himself to leave his past behind. The links that reminded him of his painful past, the chained yesterday to revive into the carefree Casanova he was called now. Jongin was aware of the many names he was awarded behind his back, all those jealous stares and somehow he ignored them. Being named as the biggest ‘Manwhore’ was very crude and disheartening at times but he was aware of the fact that he deserved the title. Jongin was intelligent, a bright student, the lead dancer of the Seoul National University’s dance troop, charming and handsome but he was also the reason of the many broken hearts.

Even with clear and straight-forward beginnings, girls somehow used to fall for him in due course of their flings forcing their ‘undying’ love on him, irritating Jongin to no end. How many times will he have to shout that he cannot love anyone? And this often led to nasty endings with rounds of blame putting and yelling that tarnished his image altogether. Hell, he never cared about the label or characterization he was tagged with.

Jessica Jung was one headstrong person who technically barged into his heart without any warnings. If we leave all those physical attributes and attractions apart, the girl was a close friend, very close friend who never missed a moment to sooth his pains. They were in a relationship that nobody understood apart from them. Not bounded by the boundaries of commitment and the force of love but with affection and Jessica will die before accepting but immense care for each other. Jongin had spent several thousands of moments with the ice queen, seen her lazing around, with messy and totally worn hair, cussing relentlessly, bossing every single person in sight, hitting like a pro wrestler and watching hours of soccer telecasts. It was almost funny to see her feminine sides jump several times when around people because the Jessica he knew was bold and bordering tomboy- a perfect play partner. There were no such things as possessiveness or jealousy in the relationship bracket they carried.

To be honest, Jongin was scared of the endings that came attached as a complimentary gift with the feeling called love, affection. It has broken him several times in the past- making him cover his heart with a fence. He was afraid of getting hurt in the process of giving away his insolent heart. It was something Jongin wanted to keep it to himself, to protect from woes, guard it from the inevitable pain yet why was he feeling a sudden clench while witnessing Suzy hug the man close?

What was the feeling that was bubbling deep within him? Jongin was not sure whether it was a one-time thing or not but he couldn’t fool himself whilst covering the pain coming to him as he seeing the object of attraction with yet another person.

Jongin wanted to stop his brain that was shouting at him for being in this state. He could no way be jealous; this feeling was omitted from his dictionary, his mind way back. He never felt this way with any of his flings or even Jessica. Jongin felt like 16 again, just like he was when in love with her, with Ah-reum.

his already stiff palms, he shook his head, desperate to throw out those painful memories. Ghosts of the past. Without noticing, Jongin bit his tongue to stop these feelings from over powering his senses, anger to kill whatever little conscience he was left with.

Jongin didn’t want to commit the same thing he did last time.

Somehow, he was getting afraid of his own self.

He was afraid of being the same person he was before. It scared him.

Soon, he collapsed on the sidewalk, knees giving away under his panic attack.

In the midst of his inner turmoil, Jongin was unaware of the curious and worried glances thrown to him by the onlookers- by the two people who had parted from their prolonged embrace and were looking at him currently.

“Jongin..Are you okay?” The girl came forward, quietly detaching her hold from the person’s middle, worry evident in her voice. She couched in front of him, coming down to his eye-level.

Jongin found himself unable to look into her orbs, scared to see the same pain he saw in Ah-reum’s eyes. But Suzy was persistent. She put her warm hands upon Jongin’s shoulders, nudging him to look at her.

“Jongin” She murmured and Jongin found himself giving to her request. They locked eyes for a brief second as her soft palm caressed his left cheek. Unknowingly, a few drops of tears fell from his eyes, falling directly over Suzy’s hand.

“What’s wrong?” She questioned in a soft voice, eyes bored deep into Jongin’s.

Jongin leaned into her touch unconsciously and muttered lowly, finding his voice from the pits, “N-nothing. I j-just want to go home.”

Nodding, Suzy turned her head to look at the person behind her who was scowling at the moment. She withdrew her hand from Jongin’s face and shoulder and stood up, facing her back to him. Some gestures were thrown from each sides and Suzy turned again, slowly facing Jongin.

“Umm....Where do you live? Sunho can drop you at your place.” Suzy enquired in her velvet voice, looking at him with concern. Jongin shook his head, not ready to be escorted by a stranger but Suzy’s hand was on his shoulder again, squeezing very lightly as a comforting gesture. Jongin felt assured and he slowly gave away his address which she signed to the man in front.

Jongin saw the man huff loudly in annoyance as Suzy helped him get up. He walked over smoothly albeit reluctantly to help the frail girl and assisted Jongin to his car which was thankfully parked nearby. Jongin was feeling too blank, too weak, too helpless as he gave away whatever dignity was left in him and surrendered himself to his caregivers.

“No........Jongin.......Noooooooo...Please leave him....Please...I love him...please...Don’t hurt him.”

“Jonginnie....See I made you pancakes...Call your Appa from his study okay...We will have breakfast together.”

“My baby boy, I am getting you a new mother who will love you more than your mom?”

“The convict is sentenced life imprisonment over the cruelty that has been done.”

“You scream murder Jongin.”

Series of voices surrounded him in wisp and darkness, it was all smoky as he stood in nothingness, covering his ears and shutting his eyes tight to buffer them, to stop them from invading his senses. Not able to take another accusation, he screamed at top of his voice, asking them to go away, to leave him alone.

He opened his eyes, waking up from a dream that he had not experienced in years.

He was sweating furiously as he sat up, taking in the familiar surroundings. The bed was same, the walls were utterly familiar and so was the eerie silence. But the sheets were fresh and blue, not the green ones he had woken up in the morning and that confused him. Who changed the sheets?

And the whole day came stumbling down to him, fist in bits and pieces and then in whole, making him scream again, this time in pure embarrassment. He went through a panic attack in front of the girl he was planning to woo? Why sweet lord why? And then he remembered the trigger and flinched. Suzy was already with someone. Someone that was really tall and attractive and owned a nice car.

Jongin sighed. He had no chance with Suzy and how would he even have with the way he behaved in front of her. The cool and confident Jongin that charmed girls into obliviousness was nowhere in sight, only helpless and weak Jongin and who in the world would get attracted to this person.

Getting off from bed he went to the attached balcony. It was late evening. He must have slept for many hours. A sudden ring diverted his mind from the orange-pink sky that recently bid farewell to the sun. Jongin went inside, snatching his phone from the bedside table. She must have placed it there too.

Seeing the caller, he picked up fast. Jongin didn’t want the person waiting for a long time. It was not fair after bailing out on them today. And even three rings were too much for that person, as they screamed into the receiver.

“Kim Jongin. Where the are you?” The voice was cold and low, as if ready to murder him.

“I’m really sorry. Listen....” Jongin tried to save himself from the wrath that was dangerously bestowed upon him. As expected he was cut short very rudely.

“You listen, you moron. I waited ing 3 hours for you outside the campus gate. Because you said you will come at sharp 4 pm to pick me up.”

As usual Jessica was scary when angry.

“Jess.” He threw the endearment in order to save his soul and was killed with coldness again.

“My name is Jessica. Call me that. OKAY. Did you even see your phone? I looked like a ing freak standing by the ing gates alone. Mind you. Alone.  What were you even busy with? Stuffing your face with ing chicken wings?” She slurred dangerously.

“Jessica, I am really sorry....I-I am...sick Jess. I was sleeping.” Jongin murmured barely audible even to himself but Jessica caught the words.

“Sick? Oh my god! Where are you? You have a fever?” She blabbered, her anger evaporating into thin air. Sometimes the girl surprised him to no end, Jessica was unpredictable like anything. One second she will be all fiery like an insulted girlfriend and all motherly in the second.

“No, no....I don’t have fever. It must have been the lack of sleep and the stretched work hours. Don’t worry I slept it off. I feel much better now.” Jongin assured her.

“Are you sure? I can get you soup if you want.” Jessica sounded...guilty? Jongin had to stifle a laughing spurt. It was funny. Jessica must have been guilty about her persistent presence in his apartment last night, raiding him off his precious sleep.

“No, it is fine. Jessica. I’m fine okay. Don’t worry so much. You will get wrinkles fast if you will do that.” Jongin cooed, smiling profusely and too soon he got the expected pfft and an Oh please.

Laughing, he slid down to his bed and said a quiet good night to Jessica and cut the call after getting a sweet reply. Jongin just loved teasing that girl.

Taking a quick look at his phone, he noticed that it was already past 7 pm. Whatever he must have said to Jessica, he was hungry. Way way too hungry. He had even skipped the quick bite he was about to have prior to the events. Huffing, he dragged himself to the small kitchen all set to extract that single piece of instant ramen that was left in his stock.

As he was searching through cabinets for the pot, his eyes fell on a container that was placed on his dining table. Jongin didn’t remember putting any unwashed dishes there, so he waltzed to the placed. And z

His eyes widened in utter surprise noticing that the container wasn’t empty. It held a beautifully green liquid with chunks of vegetables. A small paper was kept folded underneath the heavy bottom and Jongin fished it out in a lightning speed, all aware from whom the note was. And his guess was correct.

I have made you tofu soup. Hope you will like that.

Take care.

-Suzy

Beneath the shot message, digits were placed neatly stating call me if you don’t feel good, I will send Sunho to bring you to doctors.

Jongin didn’t know what to feel. Thankful or scared?

Thankful for her helping gestures or scared to fall in unrequited love again.

The voices booming from the television set were muffled by the flowing water and cluttering of utensils. It was suddenly very cold today and it was evident in the sudden fogging of the glass window of the kitchen.

She was on a dishwashing duty today and she didn’t mind it very much. It must be crazy, but the constant rubbing and cleansing of the pieces gave her a much needed space and time. Time to ponder over the events of the day that went, to schedule the next day.

Her work as a TA and as an assistant chef barely gives her any time to breathe but she made sure to leave a slot open. Just for visiting that cafe in the mornings. She herself doesn’t know why she does that, but she awaits an answer, from a person she hasn’t seen for days. But she is sure he will come one day.  And then she will get an answer.

A sudden ringing breaks her out of her reverie and wiping her hands in the kitchen towel she goes to pick it up. It is rare that she gets any type of calls from anyone. Only if the teacher is leaving all burdens on her in due of a holiday break or a sudden call from the restaurant she works in. But that has been done rarely.

Seeing an unknown number she picks the call.

“Hello” She says very cautiously, brows furrowed.

There is a static at the end and then a low cough.

“Umm....I-Is that Suzy?” The deep voice looks uncertain and Suzy racks her brain for who must have had her number and then it hits her. It must be Jongin seeking assistance.

“How are you feeling now?” She asks slowly.

“Ummm.....Now? I guess..I am fine.” The voice looks utterly confused now and Suzy mentally slaps herself for taking the person to be Jongin.

“May I know who I’m speaking with?” Suzy enquired all embarrassed and nervous.

“Ah....Please don’t freak out. We have....met before but not really talked. I don’t know if you remember me....” The person was rambling now and it deeply confused Suzy. “It has been many days..and I was just thinking......You remember your friend?..ummm..from Dreamer’s?”

She never thought her wait will be over this soon. She never thought she will be answered this early.

Sehun?”
