Thirty One
The RoommateLess than a week after their breakup...
"I don't know, Soojung-ah..." Seungyeon shook her head, moving to join her friend on the couch.
"What do you mean you don't know?"
"This..." Seungyeon waved her hand towards the table. "I feel such a fool taking a pregnancy test."
"What? Why?"
"Because I shouldn't have been so reckless, that's why!"
"That's not the issue here. The issue is you might actually be pregnant."
"Not really though," Seungyeon rolled her eyes. "I mean when you were listing off the symptoms; I thought I had them too. But... fatigue? tenderness? That could be anything."
"Yeah sure." Soojung shrugged. "It could also be a baby. Tell me this; did you and you-know-who did it last month? Before all this happened?"
"You know the answer to that," Seungyeon's eyes settled into a glare; her face flushing slightly as she remembered the last few days she spent in the penthouse with him.
"Unprotected?" Soojung smirked; thinking it was cute how Seungyeon seemed slightly uncomfortable with the discussion.
"Only kind of."
"What the hell does 'kind of' mean?"
"It means that we didn't use two forms of contraception," Seungyeon rolled her eyes once more. "Besides, I took the morning-after-pill."
"Which is what? Only ninety-one percent effective," Soojung pointed out, reaching for one of the boxes in the table. "And... your period is late."
"It had always been late," Seungyeon countered. "And not even a day late so it's probably too early to tell anyway."
"Nope!" Soojung waved the box in the air. "It says here that this is the only test that tells you '6 days before you missed your period'. So... one day late... is not too early."
"FINE." Seungyeon snatched the box from her hand. "I'll take the damn thing."
"Now we're talking..." Soojung stood; reaching for the grocery bag. "I'll make us some tea. Meet you here in three minutes."
"Three minutes?"
"Three minutes," Soojung eyed her best friend and offered an encouraging smile. "It will be fine, unnie. I promise."
"Fine," Seungyeon sighed and moved towards the loo. "I'm just going to pee on a stick; a ridiculous little stick," She held up the box and Soojung laughed as she went to the kitchen.
The two firends sat on opposite couches; facing each other while they waited out on the agonizing three minutes. The stick lay on the table in front of them; having taken great care not to wobble it. As the time ticked by and the tension grew, neither of them said much of anything.
Seungyeon tried to sort out her feelings trying to figure out what she wanted. They had just broken up a few days ago and she made it clear she doesn't want him in her life anymore. But she was honest enough to tell herself that she shouldn't have made any decision when she's angry. Though during their relationship, she and Jonghyun had discussed wanting children; they had also discussed waiting for it even after they get married.
Yet here she was, taking a pregnancy test with the slightest hope that it would be...
