Fourth Encounter
The StrangeTrue to his words, Chanshik has been relentlessly following me for the last few days. I had started to wonder if he was attending school at all. He had stalked me home that night and has since been bothering me from the time I leave the house, till the time I get home. When I get to my room, he would throw rocks at my window, leaving me sleepless at night. I’ve thought of telling my parents, but he had been smart enough to hide at the exact moment I would try calling my parents' attention. He’s also used the same tactic of disappearing whenever I try to approach the police when he follows me outdoors.
It doesn’t help that word has gotten around at school about the incident with Park Chanyeol. Apparently, according to the rumors, I had purposefully approached him with the intent of confessing. But when he rejected me, I said something so repulsive that I pissed him off.
“I know! You could sing him this song we made when we were kids!” Chanshik exclaimed, and started to sing beside me as I sat in the bus on the way to school. It had been a novel addition to his collection of tactics on how I could catch his brother’s attention. The last one involved bombarding me with random facts only the two of them knew about each other, and I had to tune him out more than a couple of times because some of those details could be described as ‘too much information.’ He sang the song like an mp3 on repeat until we reached the stop near my school.
I felt relieved when we reached the gates, because for some reason, Chanshik would never follow me inside the school. I guess he knew the school guard would not let him in, but that never prevented me from wondering how he never thought of sneaking in. Maybe he didn’t want his brother to see him? I thought. Seeing as to how violently the elder Park reacted upon hearing his name, something really big must have happened between the two of them that could have lead to them being the way they were right now.
I shook away thoughts about their strange family as I entered the classroom. Fortunately, not every student in the school was a fan of Park Chanyeol, so it didn’t turn into a situation where I suddenly became an outcast that everyone was bullying. I’ve even noticed a few students in my class looking at me in admiration so I guessed he must have had some ‘haters’ as well. Still, there were quite a number who eyed nastily me in the hallways and would whisper to each other while pointing at me in the cafeteria during lunch.
I was just thankful that Jae-eun and Yaehee were still talking to me, although they had been persistently trying to get me to ‘cough up the exact details about what happened with Park Chanyeol.’
“Tell us the EXACT words you said to him.” Jae-eun urged me as we were walking to the cafeteria for lunch. Yaehee hasn’t spoken a word but she was looking at me in earnest anticipation.
I had been trying to avoid talking about the incident for the past days, but between them and Chanshik, I was tired of dealing so I decided to give in to at least my friends, even if it was just a little.
“Honestly, I don’t even remember. I had just mentioned his brother when he got mad at me.” I narrated, trying to keep the details to a minimum. I wasn’t lying when I said I couldn’t remember the exact words I told him, though. I had been too mad about the situation for the last couple of days that I had decided to forget about the whole incident.
“Wait—what? Park Chanyeol has a brother? I’ve never heard of that.” Jae-eun exclaimed, making me even more suspicious of the whole situation. What is wrong with this family? Are they trying to hide his existence?
“And you’ve seen him?” Yaehee asked, her first words since this conversation started. When I nodded, she curiously added, “How does he look like?”
“They look exactly the same, except the younger one is three years younger than us and just a bit shorter than me.” I described, scratching my chin as I tried to recall the younger Park’s features. “Oh and he has a mole under his right eye, and another one along his jawline. Seriously though, he’s never mentioned having a brother?”
Yaehee cleared and Jae-eun nudged me as we walked to the back of the cafeteria line. I looked at her with a puzzled expression, until I caught Park Chanyeol eyeing me warily just a couple of students ahead of us in the line. I scowled at him before breaking eye contact and proceeding to browse today’s menu.
I found myself humming as I contemplated what to get for lunch when the conversation between me and my friends waned. And wouldn’t you know it: I was humming the song Chanshik was singing in the bus earlier this morning. An idea suddenly popped into my head. Thinking about it now, it probably wasn’t a good idea but I was too pissed off to let the opportunity slide.
I started whistling the song as the line moved, quietly but audible enough to the people surrounding me. Soon enough and just as I suspected, I saw Park Chanyeol glaring at me from the corner of my vision. He had stepped away from the line and had stopped moving, earning confused looks from his friends.
I and my friends, on the other hand, continued to move along the line. As we walked past him, I made sure to sing at least a whole line from the song, slightly bobbing my head along as I casually made eye contact with him. Yaehee, Jae-eun and I were about to pay for our lunches when I felt a sharp pain in my wrist and found myself being dragged away from the cafeteria.
