Angel’s P.O.V

“We are glad to welcome you in Asan Medical Center, Dr Ahn.” A lady in her late thirties said, she sat behind a big desk. On top of it sat a big plate made out of glass and on it was written ‘Director Han Yesung’. She wore expensive clothing and jewels that accentuated the fact that she was the director and rich.

I was sitting in front of the desk, in a comfortable chair; I smiled at the welcoming speech the director gave, “I’m honored to have been accepted as a resident in your establishment.”

“When I saw your CV, I couldn’t help but be impressed by how good of a student you were in the hospital you interned in. Not to forget that I heard some really good thing about you from doctors you worked with.” She paused for a moment to look back at your CV, “I believe you have a gift in what you do.”

I slightly blushed at her compliment, it wasn’t the first time I was praised for my skills as a doctor but I was still not used to the feeling. I was grateful, of course, of the praises directed at me but I just didn’t know how to react to them. “I wouldn’t say I have a gift Director Han, but just that I worked really hard to be where I am now.”

“Well, I hope that you will work as hard in our Hospital as you did for your studies.” She smiled at me, though she looked quite professional and serious on the inside, I was pretty surprised to see that Director Han was actually a really nice and warm director. “I will work twice as hard!” I said to her with determination in my eyes.

Director Han laughed at my determined face, “Well, as of now we already have someone taking care of the emergency department, so I expect you to begin work tomorrow morning.”

“I understand.” I nodded at her.

“If you have some time right now, I’ll have someone you to the emergency department so you can have a first look around at your new work space.” On cue, someone knocked at the door, “Come in!” Director Han called.

A pretty looking woman, about the same age as me or older walked in. She had light brown hair that reached to her shoulder, her skin was pale, she had big doe eyes, a pointy noise and thin lips. She was wearing the hospital uniform, a blue shirt and pants with a white coat.

“Oh Doctor Ha! You came just in time.” I stood up at the new person in the room, “This is Dr Ahn, he will be the new resident of the emergency department.”

I bowed to her and shook her hand, “Nice meeting you, Dr Lee” I said to her, “Nice to meet you too, Dr Ahn” she smiled at me.

“Take him to the emergency department and show him around.” Dr Lee nodded and asked me to come with her, before following her I bowed to the Director and then made my way out.

“So this is how the emergency department looks like, at it center you can find the reception desk, up front you can find individuals intensive care rooms where major emergencies are treated, beside the desk there is several beds where minor emergencies are treated. And that is mainly how the emergency department is composed of. You’ll get to know it more as you work more regularly here.” Dr Ha said to me as she showed me a bit of everything. Though the odd thing is that I didn’t see the doctor in charge, I had a few questions for him.

“Do you perhaps know where the temporarily doctor in charge is? I don’t really see him here” I asked her. At my question she looked around and she seemed to notice that the doctor wasn’t here. She went to the desk and asked the nurse there, “Or so I’ve heard, he went ahead and took his break.”

I nodded at her response, “Well I have some questions for him actually but I guess it’ll have to wait till tomorrow.” I looked around and my eyes fixated the front desk, “Or I can always ask the head nurse.”

“You can go ahead then, I guess I’ve showed you everything that I could, I’m looking forward to working with you Dr. Ahn” Dr. Ha said. I nodded at her and she went ahead to do her job. I still had a lot of questions so I went to the reception desk.

“Hi, I’m the new doctor of AMC, I would like to see the head nurses, I’ve got a few questions up my sleeves.” I smiled at the quite buff male nurse. He looked at me then nodded and went ahead to go search for the head nurse.

He came back with a woman who looked like she was in her mid forties.

“Are you the head nurse?” I asked the woman, she looked at me in curiosity but nodded nonetheless. “My name is Ahn Angel and I’ll be the new doctor in charge of the emergency department.”

“Ah! So you are the new resident of our department! Nice to meet you Dr. Ahn.” She exclaimed as if she just had an eureka moment, “I’m Nurse Choi! But you can call me by my name Jin Kyung!” Looking at her I’ve come to realize that she is an energetic woman.

“Nice meeting you too, Jin Kyung-ssi, so I got a few questions I wanted to ask, about how things are happening here.” She nodded, “How does a day in the emergency department usually in AMC goes?”

“Usually, a lot of minor emergencies come throughout the day, as for example people with minor burns, or who had minor work accidents and so on. And there are day, though not everyday thankfully, where some major emergencies come to our hospital,” She paused for a second, “For example, people who had major car accidents, or people who were badly injured at work even sometimes people who were badly assaulted comes in the hospital.”

I nodded at her response, it didn’t seem like something new, I worked as an emergency intern in my previous hospital and all of the cases she just mentioned where frequent there too, so it’s not a surprise.

Suddenly the phone rang, and the other nurse, the buff one, answered it. He looked panicked at the end of the call, he looked at nurse Choi, “A badly injured patient is about to come in, and they said he was badly injured!” At the mention of that, Nurse Choi immediately put on a serious face and began giving orders, as the head nurse, “I’ll call Dr. Jeon and notify him of the emergency, you go prepare a room for the incoming patient.”

She looked at me apologetically, “I’m sorry to not be able to answer more of your questions but an emergency has called.” I nodded at her to go on with her work, as I understood fully what she was implying.

And like that se went ahead and called for the substitute doctor. I decided that I should stay longer, just to see how a major emergency is handled here. It’ll be a good thing to experience.

“I prepared the intensive care room for the patient, he should be here any minute now.” The buff nurse said, nurse Choi nodded at his co-worker but still looked panicked, “I can’t get a hold of Dr. Jeon but I’ll try again!”

At that exact moment, the paramedics came rushing in, blood was everywhere in the bed where the injured patient lied, and nurse Choi and the other one immediately rushed to it.

“What happened?” Nurse Choi asked the paramedics, “The guy was shot, gun unknown, bullet touched his heart slightly, but the bleeding goes on, if nobody stitch it now too much blood will be lost and he will eventually die.”

“Nurse Kim, I’ll take care of preparation for the surgery and, you try your best to get ahold of Dr. Jeon fast” Nurse Choi said to the buff nurse. The latter nodded and went ahead to search for Dr. Jeon.

As I heard the conversation I couldn’t help but wanting to help the patient, seeing how things are going, it doesn’t seem like the substitute resident will come any time soon and the patient need to be stitched immediately. When the heart is pierced whether slightly or not, every minute counts for the heart can stop beating at any seconds. At last as I looked at the panicked face of everybody, I decided to help.

I went into the intensive care room, much to the surprise of nurse Choi and the remaining paramedic’s. I put on my serious face, “No questions for now, do as I say please. Put him on anesthesia, and prepare surgery tools, we need to stitch him now or else…” I didn’t want to finish my phrase. Nurse Choi only nodded and went on with what I told her to do.

I began prepping for the minor surgery I’ll do, when everything was done I began the surgery. As I cut through the flesh blood came out, after getting the excess blood out, I located the bullet, when I found it I took it out, once it was out, more blood came flooding in making my view of the injured heart blurry. I drained the excess blood. Once I could easily see the injury in the heart, I took the stitching tools and began stitching the heart.

I was only able to sigh in relief as the heart monitor showed that the patient's heartbeat was stable.

“Wow, that was quite impressive.” Nurse Choi, who had witness the whole scene looked at me impressed.

I smiled at her and again sighed in relief.
