appearance /

elaboration /
► Soojung is very well-known for her gracefulness and serene aura. She is soft-spoken, polite, kind, always thinking of others more than for herself, and always caring about others’ feelings and well-being. She’s refined to her superiors, gentle to and considerate of her peers. Is very dutiful to her job as a retainer. Soojung is really observant of her surroundings and is gifted in reading people’s feelings, intentions, and actions. She constantly strives to improve herself in order to benefit her comrades/peers and to prove herself to her father and still does, but mostly to gain the attention and worthiness of Prince Euikyeol. If she fails, she gets up again and trains herself to not fail a second time, never giving up. Follows the principle that as long as she can breathe, she’s going to always give her all in everything.

► She’d grown to be very loyal to Yul and as everyone knows, is greatly devoted to Prince Euikyeol and would do anything for him, quite literally. She’d do her best to protect her Yul brothers and sisters and would willingly and without hesitation put her life on the line for her prince. Fighting a battle she knows she has no chance of for him, she’s on it. He’s sad, mad, frustrated, stressed, exasperated, or etc., she’ll do what she can to help him whether it's showering him with support, assurance, or compliments. She’s a generally patient person but does have her limit. Though when irritated, she’s more of the calm but raises hell. Physically hurt those she cares for, especially Prince Euikyeol, and you’ll be blacklisted to her, she’ll make sure you don’t see the light of day. She’s reasonable though, so if it were someone higher up, she’d just secretly take revenge on them. Soojung can get competitive when it comes to improving skills, but always appears quite collected.

► Soojung has occasional moments of bashfulness around Prince Euikyeol. Despite being friendly, she never opens up to others thinking that it’s a sign of weakness that they can possibly use against her. Though never disingenuous, Soojung frequently masks how she really feels, not wanting to burden others or again seeing it as a sign of weakness and wanting to keep it to herself. So her pain, sadness, and burden, she just masks it all. Rather than displaying these emotions to others, she projects them inward. She also developed low self-esteem because of her father. No matter what she does or accomplishes, her father never seems to be proud or satisfied, making her constantly feel like she's not good enough and thus her obsession to improve. When enraged, Soojung becomes more emotional and rash at times which often leads her to impulsively attack her opponents and get rescued by her comrades before getting herself killed. So in order to avoid that, she practices emotional control to maintain her calm and rational state of mind.

background

/// SWEETIE, YOU'RE GOING TO STAY WITH YOUR FATHER FROM NOW ON ///

► Soojung was told that she was born in Yul, both of her parent’s hometown, though she’s never seen the said country for she was raised in Auril’ian with her mother and maternal grandparents. Her maternal grandparents own a tea house there where her mother works alongside them. The then 6-year-old Soojung wondered why she didn’t have a father like all the other kids, but it was no use asking her mother for she’d scold her at the mention of the man. Seeing her granddaughter’s confusion and curiosity, Soojung’s grandmother told her a bit vague information about him, that her father is a very busy man with an important job. That he’s still at Yul and she’s going to see him soon. For years, Soojung didn’t understand what her grandmother meant by “see him soon”, that is until she turned 10 years old. The day after her birthday, her mother told her that she’s going to be sent to Yul to her father. She was then told of the agreement made between her mother and father. As her mother wanted to end her marriage with her father and go to Auril’ian back to her parents, her father agreed to the condition that she sends Soojung back to him when she’s 10 to continue his family tradition. Soojung hated that she had no say in what she wanted or thought but she said nothing and followed whatever she was told. Thus, she found herself traveling to Yul with two soldiers.

/// SERVING THE ROYAL FAMILY AS RETAINERS IS THE CHAE'S DUTY, OUR DUTY ///

► All throughout her travel, Soojung kept wondering about her father; how he looked, what he was like, what he did, and so on. At her arrival, Soojung was fascinated with Yul’s beauty. She was then taken to a little more than the average house to stay; her father’s house. Though unlike what she expected, she didn’t meet her father for days but instead a trainer, Im Siwan, came every day. He first began by explaining the whole Chae family-line tradition. Soojung learned that her family has been loyal retainers to the Yul’s royal family for generations. They begin training since young and once they’re seen as ready, they’d get assigned to a royal family member to fulfill their duty. Currently, most, if not all, of her cousins are retainers to a member of the royal family and her father is the retainer of the king of Yul, King Heonju. After grasping her family history, Soojung was surprised to begin training with Siwan right away but she cooperated with anyway. That’s when she started to practice magic and combat training. Days went by and she learned that her father spends most of his nights out so she doesn’t see him often. But when she does, he’s always so cold, distant, and tough on her. He wanted his daughter to be the best, and not just the best that she could be. Whenever she didn’t live up to his expectations, he’d stop paying attention to her and decide that she was beneath his attention. The moment she didn't live up to his satisfaction, she was as good as nothing to him. Sure he loved her still but to him she was weak and weakness isn't tolerated in the Chae family. Her father's constant push to be stronger in order to not be a bother to others in the future worsened Soojung’s self-confidence. However, this weirdly made Soojung feel determined and the need to improve her magic abilities and skills in order to gain the acceptance and approval of her father. She is helped in this goal by Siwan’s influence, who trained her to have a contempt for losing and an unbending will; she will place herself at risk so that others don't need to and to assure her allies' victory. Thus, for 3 years, Soojung trained endless, even isolating herself from everyone in order to focus on only training.

/// SOOJUNG-SSI, I'LL TRUST YOU WELL WITH MY SON ///

► At the age of 13, Soojung was deemed fit to start ‘experience training’, so she was placed to be with Yul’s young quiet prince, Prince Euikyeol, with the young boy’s current retainer to train her. Before heading to start her first day as a retainer, her father took her to meet Yul’s king, King Heonju, for he wanted to have a word with her. Despite not showing it, Soojung was actually really nervous. Her father taught her how to speak, act, and behave in front of royal family members, so she was really cautious. Though she relaxed when King Heonju patted her head while smiling, telling her to take care, protect, and be patient with the prince. The king was really kind and receptive and had a strong and confident aura, which Soojung admired. After that, she made her way to a study room she was instructed to go to meet the young prince and his retainer. There, she saw them and the retainer started telling her all the know-abouts. For months, Soojung always accompanied Prince Euikyeol along with the other retainer. While the other retainer did most of the work, she stood from a far to visually learn from the older. Soojung noticed that most of the prince’s days were spent with him usually stuck reading books or being taught by nannies and sometimes trailing behind King Heonju. This made her wonder how the heir of Yul would grow up to be.

/// FROM THIS DAY ONWARDS, I DEDICATE MY LIFE TO YOU ///

► Soojung noticed the prince exchanging greetings and talking to the other retainers that accompanied him except for her. This fueled her to focus on getting his attention above everything else. However, all her attempts were to no avail and Soojung guessed he must be teasing her so she let it go. That is until a year later, as Soojung was informed that she’s going to be accompanying the prince alone one day. She wasn’t exactly thrilled at that news since Prince Euikyeol would most likely spend most of his day at his study reading and usually Soojung would talk to the other retainer when that happened which she won’t be able to now. When she went to the castle, as she expected, Prince Euikyeol was at his study reading. Out of curiosity and to understand the prince better, she picked up a book she remembered the prince was reading before and sat at the table near the prince’s usual spot. As she began reading, she was surprised when the prince placed another book in front of her telling her that this book is better than the one she’s reading and then sat in front of her. Soojung smiled at the prince and began reading the book he recommended to her. The two spent the rest of the day quietly reading with the company of each other. From that day onwards, whenever Prince Euikyeol is in his study, she’d find a book placed on the seat in front of him. She’d smile each time at the nonchalant prince and sit in front of him to read the book he leaves for her. She found herself intrigued to see what books he’d give her to read each time. When she gets tired from reading, she’d start talking to the prince about random things. She didn’t expect the prince to actually be listening to her talking for he wouldn’t reply or show reactions and she didn’t mind that, but she mentioned one day about greatly missing Auril’ian and then stopped talking as she felt homesick. The next day, when she entered the prince’s study, he propped a small book in front of her and told her that it’s nothing like seeing the real thing but the book contains drawings and sketches of Auril’ian she could at. That greatly surprised Soojung for she didn’t think he was listening but mostly she felt really touched at the prince’s thoughtfulness.

► The more time she spent closely with the prince, she found herself picking up his hobbies, developing an understanding, able to read his feelings and thoughts… and developing feelings she never thought she would, especially not for the prince. She found herself becoming willing to sacrifice herself to protect him, coming to value him very deeply and look up to him, inspired by his rapid growth and his love for his country and all those he holds dear. Then one day, as she was accompanying Prince Euikyeol on his stroll at the castle garden, she decided to tell the prince what she’s been feeling for weeks. So she gently called on him and when he turned to look at her she said, “I just wanted to tell that from today, I fully dedicate my life to you. I will be your devoted, faithful, and protective retainer. I’ll put my trust in you and I hope you’d do the same one day. I’ll prove myself worthy of it. And I’ll always be there for you at your beck and call, whether it’s for something serious or you just want someone to be with. Whenever you’re sad, mad, frustrated, stressed, or exasperated, I’ll do everything I can to cheer you up. That’s all I wanted to say, my prince.” And smiled genuinely. She saw a hint of a blush on the prince’s face before he quickly turned away and just continued walking, making her chuckle at the prince’s action. That was the start of her calling Prince Euikyeol “my prince”. Soojung never had to spell it out to the prince that she has a crush on him as her actions expressed her feelings very clearly. She had no intention to hide her crush from the prince but she didn’t intend to be too obvious to others (she blames her constant slip of the tongue of referring to the prince as “my prince”), though who was she kidding, her affection is like an open book. Not once is she expecting the prince to return her feelings but she doesn’t know why she just didn’t feel like hiding it. The only true and genuine feeling of hers she wouldn’t mask. Despite what she thinks though, she finds herself being formal with the prince when her father is around in fear of what he’d do to her if he discovers she strayed from the purpose of being a retainer.

/// IF YOU WANT TO KEEP BEING PRINCE EUIKYEOL'S RETAINER, YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO BE STRONGER ///

► On her third year of being Prince Euikyeol’s retainer, Soojung’s father warned her that if she doesn’t become stronger and more skillful, she’s going to be taken down from her position as the prince’s retainer. As the prince is now getting older, he’s going to be facing more threats and going on more dangerous battles, so he’s going to need to be accompanied by resilient and competent retainers. The thought of no longer being able to constantly stay by her prince’s side scared Soojung. In order to avoid that from happening and keep the family tradition going, her father took things into his own hands and started to occasionally train her instead of Siwan. His way of training was tough and harsh, even brutal sometimes, leaving Soojung with scars and bruises by the end. As much as Soojung hated to admit it, her father’s training no doubt made her stronger and durable to pain. She dedicated nearly seven years of hard work, training, and gaining experience from battles, missions, and whatnot to making herself as more than just capable to be Prince Euikyeol’s retainer. Her father didn’t stop his cruel training with her until she moved up in class to becoming a Light Priestess.

► As time passed, Soojung increasingly got exposed to the realities of the world. She used to focus on her physical appearance in a bid to appeal to Euikyeol. As a retainer, however, this is insufficient. Her long hair that she lets down and put so much effort into became a liability to her where during a battle, the opponent used it against her by pulling it hard rendering her useless. That incident made Soojung particularly disappointed in herself, as she was unable to contribute much in battle and had to rely on Prince Euikyeol, Taejoon, and the others to save her. So, from that day on, Soojung always styled her hair in a bun and rarely let her hair down unlike before.

/// ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH THE LIFE YOU HAVE NOW? ///

► By now, Soojung is a fully capable retainer and member of the army, who, like her peers, is comfortable with her opinions, dutiful in combat and on missions, and willing to put her life on the line for her prince, friends, and country. However, her self-confidence regarding her worth and skills do need a boost but it doesn’t seem like that will happen anytime soon with her father continually dragging her down. Whenever her father comes back home in a bad mood, he’d drag Soojung to their yard to test her skills and power. The result of it never changes where she ends up both physically and mentally hurt. She just can’t spiral out of her father’s abusive tendencies.

relationships /

Chae Byungchul | Beorc | Archsage | Dark | Because the Chae’s are a very power-oriented family-line, Byungchul, while nobody really knows his mind or his parenting strategies, in his own weird way wanted Soojung to be the best and saw fit to use whatever means necessary to toughen her up. Reasoning his abuse out of love. Soojung hates that no matter what she does or how much she improves, her father never seems to be satisfied. But she can’t help but try to hopefully someday earn her father’s approval. They don’t have the best or closest relationship, as Byungchul is always so formal, but Soojung doesn’t bear hatred for him for she understands that that’s his cruel way of wanting what’s best for her. Though she can't lie and say that she doesn't wish he'd praise her efforts sometimes.      Fc: Kim Byungchul

Im Siwan | Beorc | Sorcerer | Anima | Siwan was the best trainer Soojung could ask for. He recognizes Soojung's difficult upbringing and her struggles to improve, and for that reason focuses on her successes rather than her failures in a way of encouragement. He may have been serious and focused during their training sessions but in reality, he’s just a clumsy and naïve fluffball. Despite his personality, don't underestimate him, Siwan is a very skillful Sorcerer and is a useful ally in the battlefield.       Fc: Im Siwan

Ran Heonju | Beorc | King Heonju is very much like Euikyeol but more friendly and approachable. He isn't seen much around Yul due to him attending meetings with diplomats at Dalbyeol or spends time in their Senate. With her father being Heonju's retainer, Soojung then understood why her father was usually away or came back home late. The first time Soojung saw the king was when she first got assigned to be Prince Euikyeol's retainer and King Heonju patted her head while smiling, telling her to take care, protect, and be patient with the prince. Her first impression of the king was that he's really kind and receptive. When she does see him, Soojung can't help but stare in amazement because of the king's strong and confident aura. He'd always smile at her when he catches her staring and then she's smile back and bow. Occasionally would the king call on her to give him reports on the prince, knowing that she's the retainer that's mostly with Prince Euikyeol, and she'd do that keeping in mind not to mention things she knows the prince doesn't want his father to know (like when he hides away in his study in order to avoid doing his princely duties).      Fc: Park Sangwon

Ran Euikyeol | Beorc | Vanguard | Anima | App | The one person who Soojung wouldn’t hesitate to do anything for, even if it means risking her life. She’d support him and his decisions, try to do more to help him bear the challenges of being a prince, and fighting by his side whenever possible. Bears great fascination for the prince ever since she was young and she still does, always calling him "my prince". She holds Euikyeol’s abilities in high regard, yet is ever-worrying for his safety and well-being to the point of easily feeling unbearable guilt, and dearly values him. Taejoon points out that he believes Soojung knows Euikyeol too well for her own good, constantly placing herself in personal peril for the other. As Euikyeol is so awkward with females in general, although it relieves Soojung to see the prince not be that way as much when with her (except for when she compliments him) it also worries her to think that he might be that way because he'd totally friend-zoned her.      Fc: Kim Jonghyun

Choi Taejoon | Beorc | Trueblade | Fire | Taejoon and Soojung might as well be the only two that are able to get close to Euikyeol on a personal level and others are used to seeing them with the prince. Taejoon acts like an older brother to Soojung. He’d care for her, protect her when necessary, strike conversations, but at the same time teases her for her undying crush on the prince. The two are almost opposites, one is wild and tempered while the other is composed and patient. They like to rile each other up with both being competitive, leading to a constant friendly game of who gets the upper hand. Taejoon keeps Soojung on her toes and is the daily reminder that she also has to sharpen not only her skills but her wits and agility as well.     Fc: Lee Taejoon

Seo Youngjo | Beorc | Marksman | Thunder | App | While Soojung does interact with many people, especially those in the army, she has a special soft-spot for Youngjo. He's a close friend that she can relate to and have a level of understanding, with both of them having "father-issues". So, you can say she gets protective of him and would constantly support him and vice versa. The most common thing they'd hear from their social circle is them asking if the two are long lost soulmates because of their similar personalities, which they'd laugh and jokingly agree. After that, Soojung started to playfully call him "my soulmate".      Fc: Kim Youngjo

Banthao Achara | Beorc | Whisper | Dark | App | Soojung was quite skeptical of Achara at first, but with time saw that the younger girl was harmless. So she grew to be protective of her and kind of attained the role of an older sister to her. However, Soojung notices Achara and her prince hanging out more often, unintentionally doing stuff he and Soojung always did together, making her feel replaced. While in each other’s company, she notices her prince is happy with Achara, he might not show it but Soojung knows her prince all too well and is able to easily read his feelings. It was rare to see him happy these days, so just for him, she’d let him be. And this seems to continually happen, each time breaking her heart more and more. This also causes a bit of a strain on Soojung’s relationship with both Achara and Euikyeol. Soojung is quiet observant so she quickly caught on to Achara’s feelings for the prince and possibly some reciprocation going on. Filled with jealousy and mostly envy. She doesn’t blame her prince for falling for Achara though. She’s a beautiful girl. Wears dresses, acts feminine and charms others with her dance. She guesses that's his type which wasn’t anything close to Soojung. Despite all that, don’t get her wrong, she has no plans on giving up on Prince Euikyeol. After all, she did bear the struggles of proving her worth of being the prince’s retainer and her father’s abuse for years all for Prince Euikyeol. Everything she did was for him and he was the sole reason that kept her going. So nothing is going to stop her from being beside her prince, not her envy for Achara or anyone.     Fc: Lisa Manoban

trivia /
► When she was young, Soojung decided that as a retainer she won't develop a blind loyalty with Prince Euikyeol, like her father is to King Heonju, but instead will develop a loyalty out of trust, care, and aspiration.
► Has a messenger great horned owl called Otus. He’s usually moody and looks like he’s glaring. Would bite anyone’s finger, except for Soojung, that tries to pat him. Otus’ most common victim is Taejoon who calls the owl “the devil incarnated”.
► Soojung did feel betrayed by her mother for sending her away to Yul at first but then as she grew up, she understood that her mother had her reasons. So, she’d exchange letters with her mother from time to time using Otus. So it’s normal for the owl to be gone for a few months, with Soojung knowing that he’s with her mother.
► Despite liking traditional dresses and hairpins, she never gets the chance to wear one for her father forbid it cause it can hinder her movements for if she needs to engage in combat to protect the prince. She gave up on dolling up agreeing that she needs to always be prepared to protect the prince.
► Actually picked up the hobby of reading from the prince. Since he spends most of his time at his study reading while she has to stick by his side, she slowly found herself picking up the books that he’d finish reading out of curiosity.
► Is most likely to calmly win in a staring contest.
► Years ago, in the midst of her training practice with her father, he used her long hair to her disadvantage and pulled it hard, easily rendering her useless. Soojung was infuriated by this, thus why she started to style her hair in a bun. Noticing that, her father gave her the nod of approval for the first time, making her feel like she’s done right.
► Learned how to make friendship bracelets from her mother back at Auril’ian. Her mother told her to think of the person she’s making the bracelet for and use it as a means to express her feelings and desires for them.
► Gave the first friendship bracelet she made at Yul to Prince Euikyeol. The bracelet was made of 7 colors with each holding a special meaning. Pink, blue, and black for him to be kind and loyal to and strong for his people. Red for him to always be honest to himself. Green for him to be responsible for his own actions and fate. Yellow and orange for him to be hopeful for a better future.
► Is sometimes sent on far away jobs/assignments with other Yul army members for when they need a skilled magic user, so she'd be gone for days. Taejoon would thank the gods and goddesses when she's back to continue her duty as the prince's retainer because the said person is never on time for his schedule when Soojung isn't around to drag him.

► Follow my prince's orders.
► Unless absolutely necessary, NEVER leave my prince alone. You can leave if another retainer comes to take your place.
► Always know of his whereabouts.
► Keep my mouth shut. So, don't join in conversations my prince has with other people unless spoken to and whatever I hear should be kept private and not passed on.
► Make sure he doesn't do anything he shouldn't be.
► Be aware of the time and my prince's schedule. Let him know when it's approaching time for him to be somewhere or do something and make sure he goes or does it.
► Make sure my prince eats, drinks, and rests well.
► Don't let anyone annoy him. If he's talking to someone and seems to be annoyed, go up to them to politely interrupt and remind my prince of some fictitious place or meeting he has to be. Just get him away from the source of annoyance.
► If my prince is talking to someone and he taps his foot 4 times, make up something believable and get him out of it.
► Bow to royal family members and people in higher ranks.
► Don't overwork yourself so you can properly do your duty.
► Protect my prince at all cost.

what do you think of changkyun? /
►  Soojung sighs at the question as she recalls the past. "Huh, King Changkyun... I've seen him when we were young while I was accompanying Prince Euikyeol. I've never talked to him but I've seen how he interacted with my prince. He was aloof but yet he was also kind and polite. I would have never thought he'd turn to be, what they call, "a monster king" back then." She bites her lip as she's still in deep thought. "I don't understand what happened to him. No one suddenly changes for no reason," She shakes her head, "so something must have happened."

Whatever choice I make from either, the feeling of guilt will surely follow."

Wrapped around her waist is a half white piece of cloth extending from the back of her dress until her calves, and on it is the Yul’s crest knitted on it. Under her dress skirt is a black short legging. Wouldn't want to flash her during combat, of course. When the weather gets cold, she'd throw in a thick black cloak and replace the socks with thick stockings. She’d constantly have her staff in her hold. (Dress design) Her hair is always wrapped in a bun hairstyle in order not to get in the way. (Hairstyle

a typical day /
► Soojung wakes up at 6 AM sharp to quickly wash up and get into her uniform. Then she’d grab a piece of bread with her before heading to the castle and waiting for her prince in front of his bedroom door and accompanying him when he’s out. That’s what she usually did in the morning but after Prince Euikyeol ordered her to not come in the early morning (she’s not sure why), she’d still wake up at 6 AM, for it became a habit and would train by herself until the time she knows her prince would usually be done with working out, showering, and breakfast, knowing his morning routine like the back of her palm. So, she’d then go to accompany her prince for the rest of the day while being on guard, to the training yards, meetings, patrol, his study, and wherever. She always has his schedule memorized, what he has to do and where he has to go, so Soojung would make sure her prince follows it. At the same time, making sure both she and her prince eat and drink to avoid the possibility of fainting. At night, she doesn’t leave her prince’s side until he’s gone to his room to sleep then she’d either hang out with some of her army member friends for a bit or go back to her own.

► She’s mostly a fully faithful and dutiful retainer to Prince Euikyeol, constantly by his side. However, Soojung would help the Yul army when they’re in need of a skilled magic user. Even joining them in far away jobs/missions and would have another retainer take her place by the prince until she’s back.

final words / The songs Good Enough by Little Mix and Good Enough by Jussie Smollett really inspired me for Soojung's relationship with her father lol. And also, I didn't include Euikyeol's other retainers for maybe someone might wanna apply for that. Anyway, I really hope you liked her!
scene reqs /
►  Prince Euikyeol notices Soojung's longing stares at girls all dressed up for a festival or some occasion, so he makes her wear a dress and let down her hair (maybe give her a hairpin with a cherry blossom flower on it as a gift for her) despite her refutes, masking it with the excuse of "It's an order. Your uniform brings in attention that I really don't want right now."
►  Let the girl compliment the hell out of the prince lol.
►  Some character development where she finally decides to stop chasing after her father's approval and trying to please him and gradually gain some self-confidence and acceptance.
►  Soojung risking her life for the prince during a battle and the result of it is up to you on whether she dies or not. Ahahaha I love angst.
