Background: Yamaguchi Yumiko, born in Hokkaido, Japan on 17th of March 1994 to Karasawa Toshiaki and Yamaguchi Tomoko. In a very young age, Yumi had shown a talent in singing by performing in some programs in her gradde school. Other people says that she might have got it from her mother, who is also a singer. Yumi studied in Hokkaido University, but at the age of 16, her family moved to Daegu, Korea for business matters, so she transfered to Daegu University. In her college, Yumi can be seen to have an interest in music and so she studied on a course related to it.

Yumi, in her senior year of college, auditioned in SM Entertainment with the help of an aquaintance. She auditioned by singing and dancing on SNSD's debut song 'Into The New World'. Before auditioning in SM entertainment, she first auditioned in Woollim Entertainment, but unfortunately, she didn't got in.
