If you meet Sonya for the first time, you’ll think she’s one of those girls that look shy and trying way too hard to be cute. If you get to know her you’ll realize she’s not like that at all. Sonya is a person that prefers to dress warm when it’s freezing cold. She is a fan of leggings, sweatpants and skinny jeans. She will wear shorts but only in the summer. Background Info
Past/Family Background:
Sonya was born in Canada but spent her early life (until grade 6) in South Korea. Since elementary school, Sonya had been participating in school music concerts and performances, hence developing a liking to it. At that time, her father was working as the dessert chef in one of Seoul’s finest hotels. Her mother was still at home taking care of the family. During her last year in Korea, Sonya and her dad secretly went to audition for SM, which she failed to pass the second stage. Once her family moved to Canada, they settled in Toronto.

Her father wanted to open a bakery, and Sonya’s mother was not pleased. Worried that the bakery might not earn enough money for the family, her mother applied to college to study computer science and business management. At school, Sonya had a hard time adapting because she was not able to speak English properly. She managed though, practicing singing in English and going to tutor for help. She met Henry Lau, a boy who was just as into singing and dancing as she was. They participated in one SM Audition together in which Henry was admitted. She continued to practice but began to lose hope until. One summer trip back to Korea…

Trainee Background:
Sonya began auditioning at the age of 12 in Korea. When she moved to Canada, she went to and in Toronto and even sent in videos. After multiple tries, Sonya was about to give up when her father decided to go back to Korea for their summer family vacation. There was a music festival happening and a singing competition was held. Sonya decided to give it a try, covering “Refelction” by Christina Aguilera. During the performance, a JRU Entertainment scout happened to be at the festival and overheard Sonya’s performance.  Almost at once, she accepted the offer (her mother ignored her for a couple of months after that).

Sonya spent the next three years as a trainee under JRU Entertainment. During this time, she spent most of her time in the exercise room, and dance studio. Because she did not have any dance background, she had to train hard to keep up with the other trainees. In her spare times, she was would learn Japanese. As for her voice, she constantly challenged herself with more difficult songs that required stronger belting or a higher note. On her spare  times, she had her head in the music while exploring the new city and her new found freedom away from home.

How did you guys met?
{ Onew } They had met in elementary school participating in their school choir. They did not really know each other back then. It wasn’t until after Onew debuted Sonya recognized him from a music show. They did not meet again until a photo shoot (Sonya was not debuted yet) and started to talk again. 
{ Sunggyu } A friend of Sonya’s high school friend. They did not officially meet each other until a photo shoot.
{ Minhyuk } Sonya and Minhyuk met  at the broadcast one day. She started the conversation by saying how her brother had the same name and exchanged numbers while waiting for their time to film. He debuted before her, but sent text messages now and then to encourage her to not give up and keep on practicing.

How did you become best friends?
{ Victoria } Since she didn’t know much people in Seoul, Sonya often went to visit Onew back in her trainee days. She would often bump into Victoria and instead of going to find Onew, she would sit down and talk to Victoria in Chinese.

{ Dongwoon } They met at the photoshoot. They didn’t begin to talk to each other when they both wanted to the same lunchbox. From then on, Dongwoon would usually call Sonya out to try new restaurants.

{ Henry Lau } They were from the same high school in Canada where they were in the same school band and choir together. They later auditioned for SM together; Henry made it in but they still kept in contact.

How did you become friends?
{ Hyorin } Sonya greatly admires her singing and overall her stages. They met during a music show and Sonya asked Hyorin to give her advice. Occasionally, they would meet up for a cup of coffee and talk.
{ Kyuhyun } Having a interest in video and online games, she did not hesitate to go up to Kyuhyun and ask him about Starcraft. They started to play games together and continues to keep in contact outside of games.
{ G.NA  } Their Canadian root brought them together. After Sonya got twitter, G.NA and her began tweeting to each other.
