you ever meet someone who has so much of their life together, you're surprised they're even human? well, if not, then meet evelyn luong. she juggles her major in creative writing and minor english literature while also managing her role as her sorority’s secretary. she's the friend, sister, classmate, you go to for advice because she somehow has the answer to everything? you're a business major? oh, don't worry, evelynn may not know anything about the business school but she has a friend she talks to that does so she can refer you to him for advice. she's somehow always the center of attention, since she has this aura that draws people to her. she could tell people the sun orbits around the earth and some people may actually believe her just because it came from her lips. 

though evelyn has issues handling her own emotions, and maybe it's the stress she pretends to not have building up inside of her that causes her mood to change so quickly all the time. she struggles with dealing with her feelings and managing anything that's not happiness or motivation to work harder. she thinks its largely influenced by the pressure to grow up "perfect". since she was little, she was always expected to excel in everything—academics, sports, social skills—if she was lacking in anything, her mother was on her immediately telling her to work harder. so evelyn, ultimately, ends up working her hardest on every single aspect of her life. but because of that, she doesn’t have enough time to consider herself and her own feelings. she’s never really thought about her own feelings or emotions. rather, she considers them things that get in her way while trying to become that perfect human being she wants to become. because she pushes those emotions away until something causes her to snap. so when evelyn cries, she sobs. and when evelyn yells, she screams. most of the time she’s composed, but sometimes, even the smallest things not going her way might trigger these emotional responses. on really bad days, you can sometimes find her walking out of class with tears running down her cheeks while texting brendon to save her because she doesn’t even know why the hell she’s crying because the exam honestly wasn’t even that bad. even though she's the friend others go to for all sorts of help, evelyn can barely help herself.

but once it turns to night, evelyn turns into a completely different person. once the sun sets, she suddenly becomes the sorority girl stereotype. she changes out of her college hoodie and puts on a tube top way too short for her and shorts that show way too much. she loves alcohol more than her mom loves the straight a's on her transcript, and she loves locking lips with the first guy her beer goggles deem attractive enough to spend the night with. some people call her 'loose', others say she's fun to be around, because even when she's inebriated, she's the drunk friend who's screaming at guys and girls to get away from her clearly uncomfortable and intoxicated friends. protective mom friend will be protective, even if she's stumbling around trying to kick that guy in the balls for grabbing her sister's . even without liquid courage, she's not afraid to speak her mind about things she dislikes. and if you irritate her, you're going to have to endure her spitfire wrath. she has a reputation for being "that girl you'd want to have a one night stand with, but probably not the girl you're going to marry" because of her temper. for her, this night version of herself is the stress relief she needs. it's her distraction from her 'perfect' day self. she doesn't care what people think of her, as long as her loved ones understand her. evelyn needs this escape from her stressful daily life, and her stress relief comes in the forms of soju bottles, shots, and climbing into cute boys' beds.

to summarize, evelyn is a smart girl who unintentionally releases her stress by drinking her life away and sleeping with almost every male who might take interest in her (safely of course, because safe ). cares a lot about her friends and family, and can take care of them but doesn't know how to take care of herself. because of her lack of understanding of herself, she can be quite moody and emotional. she's the type of person who makes friends with almost everybody--or at least, acquaintances.

evelyn luong was born fortunate. anyone could tell you that. she was a child born from the love between the ceo of the symphony music group and his secretary. they had married after her father's first wife passed away unexpectedly after childbirth, and evelyn was the result of that. she was raised with everything she ever needed--toys, delicious food, new clothes, and as many stuffed animals she wanted. but one thing evelyn luong could never get from the money that her parents gave her was love. they were always away from home for weeks on end for business trips, and evelyn got used to just living with her aunt, older brother, and cousin. evelyn yearned for the warmth of her father's palm ruffling through her hair, and the comforting embrace of her mother embracing her in her arms.

seven year old liam saw his four year old sister crying by herself one day, and though they didn't share the same mother, the love he felt for her was real all the same. so he hoisted her up into his lap and held her tight. it was love--the love she needed. so liam became the proud father who praised her drawings and the loving mother who would wipe the food from after every meal. liam became her role model, and her rock. she strived to make him proud, to always love him no matter what happened.

"oh liam, are you babying your yonger sister again?" their aunt would ask with a laugh. and liam would smile sheepishly while holding a crying five year old evelyn's hand. "maybe." he'd murmur shyly.

at fourteen, evelyn enters her freshman year of high school. she's confident, with her head held eye and her brown eyes twinkling with an excitement that all freshman hold when they begin high school. her brother was a senior at the time, known for his ability in soccer, his good looks, and his womanizing tendencies. and evelyn soon became known as "liam luong's precious baby sister". which automatically meant her social standing in high school quickly soared to the top, and her best friend and cousin ethan followed just by being related to her. people murmured about how good looking their family was, eyes following them everywhere they went together.

and before winter break even began for evelyn, she had gotten her first boyfriend. much to her cousin and her older brother's dismay. she had witnessed her brother and cousin bringing home girls, but had never personally dated anyone herself. her brother stopped bringing home different girls the moment he turned eighteen and met his soulmate. it changed him--and evelyn wondered why. her current boyfriend wasn't someone she was particularly interested in--but what evelyn was interested in, was love.

was love found by dating someone? was it just between soulmates? how could evelyn obtain that love? she experimented. she hugged him, kissed him, and let him take her ity. and soon, evelyn discovered that love doesn't stem from any of those things. no matter how many times she tried to love him, she couldn't. so she dumped her first ever boyfriend, and found a new one a month later.

and soon, evelyn developed a reputation outside of being "liam luong's precious baby sister". no one had the guts to say that evelyn luong was a "", because liam and ethan always hovered around her protectively, but she knew everyone thought it. by her senior year of high school, evelyn got addicted off the feeling of people "loving" her. even if they didn't truly love her, they loved what she could give them--and that was her body. the feeling of being held, carressed, and needed. it was what she desired for so long. it was like the first time her older brother showed her love, but she could get it again and again from different guys.

in their senior year of high school, ethan and evelyn got accepted into haebyeon national university with the help of her parents. they flew to korea together, suffered through the years together, but ethan's silent hope of evelyn changing never came true.

she still seeked out that fake love. yet when she actually received her soulmate, all she could feel was fear. so evelyn continues to indulge herself in other people for comfort. and she thinks she'll continue on doing so until it tears her apart from the inside. because though evelyn wants to know what love is, and how one can feel so powerfully because of it, she's also terrified of finding out.

unsurprisingly, evelyn first met junyoung at a beta party when they were both 18. surprisingly, she was only slightly tipsy instead of wasted when she spotted him from across the room. they locked eyes, and evelyn had found her prey for the night. he was just her type--with his leather jacket and ripped black jeans. junyoung didn't know why he felt so drawn to the girl who was sauntering up to him, but he couldn't manage to tear his gaze away from her, even when she took his hand and pulled him to sit down at the couch with her.

"hi, i'm evelyn," she smiled her usual smile, and offered him a shot she stole from the beta bro sitting beside her. "what's your name?"

it had just been typical flirting until evelyn wrote her number down on his wrist so he could text her later. junyoung had grabbed her hand once she finished and yanked it up to his wide eyes. and evelyn was just as surprised as he was to find the same numbers that she had just sketched into his skin mirrored right on her own. junyoung broke out into a wide, ecstatic smile and murmured a, "i finally found you", over the extremely loud music.

and this was how evelyn met her soulmate, min junyoung.

before their first encounter, junyoung had been trying to communicate with her for months. but evelyn had never communicated back, besides to write a quick "please stop, your messages are getting so long they're covering my entire arm". evelyn never quite cared for soulmates. though her brother was very happy with his, her parents weren't soulmates. she believed that love could be found even without fate tying two people together. at this point, love to her was love between family members, love between friends, and love shown physically when she slept with others.

so seeing junyoung's excited eyes made evelyn reel back into the couch in shock. sure, she couldn't deny that she felt a connection to him the moment they started talking. and junyoung, who had been waiting to meet his soulmate for so long, pulled evelyn outside so they could talk without the loud music and drunk people stumbling around them.

yet, before junyoung could even say anything to her, evelyn murmured an apology and left.

junyoung texted her the next morning with an apology for being so forceful and insisted on meeting up to make up for it. so he invited her out for coffee, and she reluctantly accepted his invitation. which is how evelyn reluctantly met her soulmate and his bright smile the second time. he was deceptively good looking at the party. during the day, junyoung was like a little puppy. she had seen him a few times on campus, before the previous night, and she had always thought he was scary--unapproachable. but now, the man before her was wagging his tail and excitedly trying to get her attention by offering her a bite of his cheesecake.

evelyn couldn't help but giggle, and junyoung's smile brightened more.

she learned more about him than she expected to. she always told herself she wouldn't care for her soulmate, but it was hard not to when junyoung always went out of his way to care for her. he'd pick her up after her classes, and he'd deliver her coffee or bubble tea whenever she was feeling upset. he was, again, like a puppy, following her around and trying to get her favor.

through the time they spent together, she realized appearances can truly be deceiving. because though junyoung rarely smiled if they weren't together, evelyn noticed that his smile would instantly brighten up her mood. and when she would reject him and he would sulk, she couldn't help but feel guilty and upset as well. junyoung was many things, but a bad boy certainly wasn't it. he may have dressed like one, but he had never played with any girls' hearts. in fact, he confessed to her that he had never been in a relationship, and he had never even kissed anyone before.

"do you dislike that i'm inexperienced?" he had asked her as they studied together. he called this a date, she called it a 'get-together to make sure we don't fail'.

"no." she shrugged. "because i don't think i'll ever have to worry about it."

junyoung closed his book and scowled at his soulmate who still hadn't peeled her eyes away from her laptop screen. and in his irritation, he slammed her laptop shut, leaned over the table, and pressed his lips to hers. so a year into their strange relationship with each other, they shared their first kiss.

the kiss only lasted a few seconds, but evelyn was shellshocked when he pulled away. junyoung had left by the time she came to her senses and realized that even though he was inexperienced, she had enjoyed it much more than she should've.

evelyn got a drunk text from junyoung that night while she was sitting in (fwb's) bedroom. he declared that he loved her. he loved her laughter, her odd sense of humor, her motherly tendencies, and even her fear of letting people in too close. he loved everything about her, and evelyn shut down.

love? if he loved her then, "u should just sleep with me then" she responded to him cruelly.

and junyoung replied to her mere minutes later in broken korean, "i can't, i love you too much".

evelyn didn't understand. to her, love was . if he truly loved her, he'd have with her. did he really love her if he couldn't even sleep with her? this was too much thinking for her, so she tossed her phone to the side and ignored junyoung for the rest of the weekend.

junyoung didn't understand what he did wrong when he woke up with a hangover. he read over his texts, but only saw the read receipt from evelyn's side. he sent another text, only for that to be read and ignored as well. he showed up at the delta house and was immediately turned away. he even appeared at evelyn's classes the next day and saw her run the opposite direction from him.

it was clear to him now that she was avoiding him. he just didn't know why. was it because he confessed?

so junyoung sent another text after four days of radio silence from evelyn.

junyoung: i'm sorry. i'm not sorry for loving you, but i'm sorry that i can't just sleep with you like everyone else. i want to cherish you, and i want you to be comfortable with being my girlfriend before we get to that stag of the relationship. i've never dated before, but i want our first time to be special. i'm already disappointed that our first kiss was like that, so please, wait for me. just as i'll wait for you to love me back.
