PERSONALITY Stubborn, defiant, ambitious, mild superiority complex tied to a massive ego, focused, dismissive, resolute, amicable, self-centered, quick-witted, cunning, manipulative
Maru is good fun on a good day. She's got this sarcastic and slightly controvertial humour, the kind that is just a tad too honest. She's not afraid to make fun of herself and she's not afraid to lampshade the industry and everyone around her, after all she's been in it basically since she was born. She's got this way of making someone feel like they're part of a special look behind the scenes, part of a secret, as she jokes in hushed tones of industry truths, all in a light-hearted joking manner. Hints at maintaining her image, blatant mentions of diets, jokes that the managers probably want her to keep shut, etc. Not only does Maru know how to seem honest and endear herself, she's also well versed in shifting the blame/bad light onto others. She can get too real in her cynicism and too mean in her shade. One needs thick skin to be friends with her.
Maru is filled with ambition. She sees herself doing great things, she sees herself on top of the entertainment world, and oh how she wants to get there. She's also stubborn and clings to her own ways. She wants to get on top of the foodchain, but she doesn't want to sell out her integrity and genius for it. She wants the world to play by her rules, even if she knows very well that it can't. It leaves a lot of conflict within her, and frustration when things aren't going her way. Her ambition knows no boundaries, and she has the cunning to work on achieving her dreams behind the scenes as well as in front of them. Maru is naturally a fun person to talk to, that part isn't faked, but hey that doesn't mean she's not well aware of the power of contacts and good relations either. She's not really outright a back-stabber, that's not quite her style, but Maru can certainly be selectively helpful. Help those who are of no competition to her, help those whose full potential she can benefit from. Maru's cunning and manipulations are all like that, not quite malicious, but somehow she ends up the better for it.
She knows music like none other, just like she knows the technical aspects of the industry as well. She can be cunning in her manipulation of themes and trends, but Maru is a stubborn thing as well, a stubborn thing with vast notions of grandeur. A stubborn thing who'd much rather create an experimental song even though she knows it won't sell as well, she has this little voice, this little manifestation of her own ego, telling her that maybe when she writes it it will do well, because what she writes is excellent. So she works on the experimental sounds, the creepy music box sound and sing-song voices of Shadow, the deep house of 4Walls, the otherwordly aesthetics synths of Galaxy, the infectuous dancehall synths of Gashina, the controversial jaw-dropping... eh drop in I Got Love, that's what she's talking about. Maru takes her inspiration from many genres, anything from RnB to synthpop to house, anything but bubblegum pop or boring ballads. Maru is better than that. After all, Jang Maru has a name to make and uphold, even if that comes at the expense of her group's success.
Their international success only fuels her ego, even if she knows well that the international fandom doesn't pay their bills, and it'd be useless without a strong Korean base. But they love her- eh she means their music, and so her ego is fuelled and her risks are verified, and Maru can do no wrong in Maru's eyes. Fundamentally self-centered, Maru looks out for herself first, though she knows how to look out for others in a way that benefits herself as well. Call attention to the member best at variety in an interview, or highlight the visual in a song at key moments so they can catch the eye. If it benefits the group, it benefits her. She doesn't mind much if the spotlight isn't on her, what Maru cares about is music, as long as she's the highest regarded behind the scene, the visual can smile at the camera all she wants. After all, the more fans are pulled to the group, the more her genius will be heard, but you better believe that she makes sure it's known that it's her genius that's brought them this far.
BACKGROUND Maru is the daughter of a decently well-known folk singer who had quite a following in the 70s and 80s, Jang Seungwoo, and the childhood sweetheart he married. It's all very boring and wholesome. Even then unless charts were constantly topped, music would never fill a bathtub with cash, but royalties kept them afloat, and her father had plenty of contacts in the industry.
As the daughter of a folk singer, she essentially group up on the fringe of the music industry, and music was always pushed upon her. Maru didn't mind, music was her love and in music she thrived. She had a talent for it, and that talent was honed into a mighty skill over years of practice. the performance aspect was never her favourite part of music, even if it was expected she learn how to sing, no it was the instrumental side where she shone. Maru knew what she wanted to do with her life, and her father's constant encouragements told her that she could do it. She could become famous with music.
It must come as no surprise, then, that Maru went straight to Howon University after she left school, majoring in applied music. The most prestigious music school in Korea, Maru got in with a mix of connections and her own skills (genuis, as she likes to see it), and she had the time of her life. The university made Maru come to life. Suddenly her music wasn't just appreciated by her dad in the living room, or whatever guests he was showing her off to, suddenly she was surrounded by other great musicians, judged by even more great musicians. Maru thrived.
When the end of her four years of university approached, Maru had the problem of what now? She could pull some connection strings and start interning at some company as an in-house composer, but she also kind of liked the idea of being the one who put her own creations down. She always got so attached to the songs she wrote, the idea of giving that away to some other artist didn't really sit right with her. So, instead, she started looking over her options. Her dad happened to be fairly good friends with Bang Sihyuk, a lively conversation of soju was all it took to suggest a trainee deal with Maru. She was gunning for a solo, to be some kind of singer-songwriting-producer-genius, as one does, she didn't quite count on the possibility of a girl group debut.
TRIVIA
* When it comes to instrumentation and melody, Maru has got this. When it comes to the actual lyrics, Maru has not got this. As innovative as she is with a guitar or a music program, poetic words do not come easy to Maru.
* While Maru can play guitar and piano and classical flute, she's the first to proclaim the superiority of synthetic instrumentation. The soundboards can do anything a classical instrument can do better nowadays, and they can get someone else to write the boring piano line for that basic ballad. She uses real instruments sometimes, but only in the most modern and groundbreaking of ways. After all, this is Jang Maru we're talking about, and Jang Maru does not do basic.
* You better believe that it irks her like no tomorrow that she didn't get one of those soulfull unique voices.
* She hates hates hates it when others take even a shared producer role for songs she's composed. That's giving away full control of her baby man. If compositions are blueprints then the producer determines the full finaly product and she wants that to be her.
* She feels like the lyrics are honestly the least important thing about a song, and can be dismissive about its part. You're just writing window dressing for her song, don't think that suddenly makes it your song too.
* There are people here there and everywhere in the industry who have heard of her thanks to her dad's love for bragging about her at every turn.
* She's done a few songs for other groups here and there, for the exposure or for friends or for label mates, but she always feels that pang of regret seeing another group or artist sing her songs.
