Dear Eunkwang, From Choyeon
kim choyeon (김초연)
"Be somebody who makes everybody feel like a somebody"
PERSONALITY TRAITS —dorky, hardworking, creative, easily embarrassed/insecure, passionate, kind, gullible, honest
ELABORATION —
• dorky: Being kind of socially awkward, Choyeon comes across as a total dork. She gets surprised easily, for example, so whenever she gets surprised she shrieks and flails and maybe trips over herself. (Oh yeah, she trips over nothing all the time, she gets bruises without knowing when or where that happened, etc. Soyeon is so done.) Choyeon's laughter is also super loud and she gets embarrassed about it, but it's a nice sound (even if she looks super dorky laughing). She also makes the funniest expressions when she's confused or surprised.
• hardworking: Choyeon has a single-minded, laser focus when it comes to getting things done. When she gets super into a project, she won't notice anything else until it's done, whether it's her phone ringing or her body trembling from hunger. She puts her all into her work all the time, she doesn't believe in halfassing anything.
• creative: Choyeon has always been artistic (she likes music, she draws occasionally, and she loves photography) and at math/science. She comes up with ideas all the time and seems to look at situations from a difference angle than everyone else, so problem solving comes pretty easily to her. (Unless it's an emotional problem. Then she panics.)
• easily embarrassed/insecure: With a warrior queen like Soyeon as an older sister and nearly maternal figure, Choyeon has always felt like she paled next to her sister (completely unintentional on Soyeon's part). Because she idolizes her sister so much, she's been comparing herself to Soyeon since she was young, and while she knows they're two very different people, it left a mark on her. Her so-called best friend in middle school also systematically destroyed her self-confidence and made her doubt herself all the time, so she's pretty insecure about her talents. She also gets flustered easily, and once she gets embarrassed she gets cherry red and she gets even more embarrassed by her red face, and it just keeps going until she either runs away or distracts herself.
• cowardly: Choyeon, when faced with a problem, prefers to run. Oh, normal problems like the toilet clogging or her cat vomiting, those are easy, but problems with people? With emotions? She runs for the hills, denies there's a problem in the first place, and continues on like there's nothing wrong. If there's a coworker who makes her feel stupid and untalented, for example, she tells herself it'll blow over, that she's overreacting, and she just avoids the problem until it either goes away or she has no choice but to face it. She's good at giving people emotional advice, but she has no idea how to handle her own: love, for example, terrifies her. She's too afraid of hurting both herself and the other person. In middle school, her so-called best friend systematically chipped away at her self-confidence, but she didn't want a confrontation and didn't want to hurt the friend (what if she didn't mean it?), so she kept silent and endured, causing heavy damage to her self-confidence. Choyeon, girl, get your together and face the issues.
• kind: Choyeon is such a bleeding heart, God, Soyeon sometimes wants to tear her hair out because of it. She's especially weak to animals and children, but seeing people sad or hurt tugs at her heart. When she was younger she couldn't say no to people at all because she was so afraid of hurting their feelings, and it negatively impacted her, so as she grew older Soyeon toughened her up a little. Now she can say no and walk away from hurting people when she needs to, since she can't drop everything and run to people's aids all the time, but she still prefers to be kind and caring.
• gullible: You know the people who look up when someone says "It says 'gullible' on the ceiling"?? That's Choyeon. She looks up every single time. It can be sweet and funny, sure, but sometimes it's an actual problem. She's so trusting and sincere, wanting to believe in the best of everyone, that she often places her faith in the wrong people and gets hurt or humiliated in return. Choyeon's so easy to trick, Soyeon despairs about it all the time.
• honest/sincere: Choyeon finds it hard to lie, and she rarely sees a need for lying. She's incredibly sincere about everything, and she firmly believes that cards and presents should come straight from the heart, none of those generic gifts and cards nonsense. Her honesty means that when she's unhappy or she doesn't like someone, it unfortunately becomes pretty damn obvious. Her sincerity about everything and everyone also means that she gets hurt easily if someone betrays her trust or is mean to her.
• maternal/responsible: She has a tendency to fuss about the wellbeing of her loved ones--"Did you pack your jacket? Did you eat breakfast? Do you need a hug?"--and is very responsible about her work, so people see her as a mother figure sometimes (she's the mom friend). She doesn't even try to mother people, it just happens. Sometimes people get annoyed by her concern all the time though.
BACKGROUND + CURRENT EVENTS —
• Choyeon was born the youngest of three siblings (she has one older sister and one older brother, Soyeon and Jinsu respectively) in Daeugu, South Korea. Since their parents (dad's a prosecutor, mom's a university professor) were so busy working, her siblings--especially Soyeon--more or less raised Choyeon. As a result, Choyeon looks up to them and seeks their approval more than she seeks the approval and love of her parents, though she does love them.
• Choyeon herself is currently professional photographer, working mainly with a magazine company. Her favorite jobs are wedding photos.
• Choyeon lives alone in a one-room apartment with her cat in Geumcheon District, Seoul.
• She's had one relationship before, and the jerk of a boyfriend cheated on her. She bawled for three days straight, but snapped out of it long enough to stop Dana from punching him in the face.
• Choyeon found out about Dear Namyeon from an ad on Naver and she immediately signed up because hell yes. She didn't actually think she'd get chosen, but it was worth a shot and all that.
• She became a fan of BTOB when she heard "Star" in a café one day. She liked it so much that she asked the barista about it and when she went back home, she looked up BTOB and just... fell hard. Especially Eunkwang, who shines on variety shows.
RELATIONSHIPS —
• Eldest sibling/older sister - Kim Soyeon (30) - magazine editor - bossy, intimidating, strong-willed, confident, pragmatic - Being so much older than Choyeon, Soyeon is fiercely protective of her baby sister and feels responsible for her. Choyeon feels overshadowed by her strong sister and often gets frustrated because Soyeon still treats her like a kid, but she also craves Soyeon's approval and love more than anyone else's. The sisters have a complex relationship, with Soyeon being too demanding or controlling sometimes and Choyeon wanting to impress her, admiring and comparing herself to Soyeon to the point of making herself insecure. Soyeon strongly disapproves of her sister going on Dear Nampyeon.
• Older brother - Kim Jinsu (28) - pilot - bright, cheerful, adventurous, gregarious, cunning, observant - As a pilot with wanderlust he's away from home a lot, but he genuinely cares for Choyeon and loves teasing her like any older brother would. He prefers to let his sisters take care of things on their own, but he does subtely guide them from time to time. Choyeon views him as an exasperating but fun brother, reliable at the most unexpected moments, and they have a good friendly relationship. No one really knows what he thinks about Choyeon going on this show, but he kept giving Eunkwang creepy smiles when they met.
• Best friend - Yang Dana (22) - illustrator - fierce, stubborn, ambitious, grumpy, heart of gold - Dana met Choyeon in college and has been fiercely protective of her ever since. Dana makes sure to screen Choyeon's potential lovers carefully, but in the end she acknowledges and respects Choyeon's decisions and feelings. Dana is Choyeon's strongest defender, and Choyeon takes care of the details when Dana blazes ahead in life. They make an exceptionally good team and their platonic chemistry is off the charts: the people around them swear that they can read each other's minds.
• Pet cat - Boba (1) - fat cat - lazy, aloof but occasionally has bursts of aegyo, always hungry - Boba is Choyeon's baby. She loves him to death, though she's constantly exasperated by him and is trying to get him on a diet (it's not working). Boba, little that he is, only really likes Choyeon and views all other humans as his servants. (Choyeon is the head of his servants in his eyes.) Choyeon rescued him from a pet shelter.
(<-- Boba)
•Baby cousin - Kim Najoon (5) - toddler - sweet, lovable, obedient, mischievous from time to time, wants to help people - Choyeon doesn't really know how to handle kids, but Najoon freaking loves her. She's his favorite aunt, and he always asks his parents if he can see Aunt Choco soon. Choyeon is weak to his puppy eyes. So weak. She's not even ashamed.
MESSAGE TO VIEWERS — *bows hastily* *nearly falls off chair* Sorry, sorry, wait can I redo that? OK -- Annyeonghaseyo! My name is Kim Choyeon, and I'm a professional photographer. I'm a huge fan of BTOB's Eunkwang-sshi, and I'm still in shock that I'm here. *laughs nervously* Please take care of me! *bows again*
