Foreword:
“Sweetie, come over here. We need to talk to you.”
She sat down at the couch as she came home, “Yes?”
“You do remember you’re engaged, right?” Her mom asked her. “That’s all you’ve been talking about since I was little. Of course I remember. More like, I know I’m engaged.”
“You know to who?”
“He studies in the same school as I do. Plus we had dinner a few hours ago.”
“I know you’re only highschool and this will be a lot of stress for you. Especially that you’re in senior year.”
“Honey, we’re very sorry.” Her mom held both her hands. “Sorry? For what? For the fact that I’ve been engaged my whole life to a guy I never talk to? No, wait, I do talk to him, when needed. Or during the family gatherings because you force us to.”
“Not for that.” Her dad shook his head. “Then for what?” She looked at them confused, “Are you going to break up the engagement after all this years? Well, you’ve all finally come to your senses.”
Both her parents shook their heads, “Not that either.”
“Listen to me. We know we promised you that you would get married after college, or maybe while you’re halfway through college.” Her mom looked straight into her eyes. She looked back with a confused look.
“I hope you’ll understand, we know we never gave you or him a good reason why you two should get married. Until now, we still have no reason. We just want our one and only children to be married to each other, that’s all. It doesn’t even sound like a reason, yet you both fully accepted the fact you will have to get married to each other someday.”
She looked at her dad, “Dad, what’s mom saying? I never asked for a reason anymore because I know you won’t give me any. Why bring it up again?”
Her dad caressed her cheeks and lightly smiled, “What your mom’s trying to say is that, we’re sorry because you’re only in highschool, we have to break that promise of getting married in college or after college. Princess, you’re getting married in 3 months.”
She looked at both her parents shocked, “What? Why? All of the sudden?”
“His father’s currently sick, he wants to see his son get married, but he only has a few months left, if he’s lucky, he might have a year left. But he won’t be able to see his son get married, because college will still take a long time.”
She looked down and nodded, “I knew this day would come someday, but I never thought it would come this fast.” She whispered.
