A White Tulip

365 DAYS AFTER

Yoo Minhae slightly trembled, as she pulled open a drawer, her hands digging into the pile of ‘garbage’ in it. To anyone else, the pile of things in the drawer would look like junk, but to Minhae, they were so much more to her than useless pieces of trash. She suddenly calmed down as she found what she was looking for, a book. It wasn’t just another ordinary plain book though; it was a photo album, one where all the memories with him were kept.

Minhae stared at it for a few seconds before closing the drawer and placing the photo album on her desk. She spun around, as if she was expecting to see someone behind her, her elbow hitting something on her desk, sending it spiralling towards the floor. Minhae yelped in surprise, quickly crouching to the floor to examine the damage.

What she hit was a photo frame; one with a beautiful photo kept inside it, only making her feel down again. The photo was taken with Minhae and him together; the day where he brought her to the beautiful gardens. They were smiling, having fun together- everything a couple needed to stay together. Minhae gritted her teeth together, tears threatening to come out. The photo was intact, but the frame was broken—once again.

She quietly looked around the room, and decided that she would clean it up later. Minhae couldn’t help but remember him; everything about him; his smile, his laugh, the way he would say her name. Before she broke down, she swiftly left the room in tears.

“I’m sorry.”

Minhae glanced around the room one more time as she put on her black button up jacket, getting ready to leave the house. She then realized a black car pulled up outside her house, and she started to move towards the door. Once she took a step outside, the wind hit her like bricks, the snow falling lightly to the ground. The whole town was covered with it; it was around mid-December, about over a week before Christmas. Christmas lights were being put up, and inflatable Santas and reindeers were popping out all around the street. She occasionally saw some snowmen and igloos around the neighbourhood.

She quickly stepped into the car, quietly greeting her friend in the back seat, Seo Joohyun, though nicknamed Seohyun. Seohyun was her best friend, ever since she transferred to their high school back then. Minhae gave quiet nods to the two people in the front; Yoo Youngjae, her older brother, and Jung Daehyun, who was friends with him.

As Daehyun started driving, Minhae noticed the tense atmosphere in the car, and decided not to say anything, or even move. All she did was stare at her lap the entire time, twiddling with her thumbs. She couldn’t get her mind off him at all; thinking of his brother didn’t help either.

“We’re going to drop by the flower shop to get some things, okay?” Daehyun asked, breaking the heavy atmosphere. He didn’t really wait for anyone’s answer; concentrated on driving.

After a good twenty minutes, their car arrived at the flower shop, parking in the back. Seohyun got out of her seat first, and jerked her head at Minhae, telling her that the two of them will enter the shop alone. Minhae didn’t really notice; she didn’t do anything to show Seohyun she acknowledged what she even did. Seohyun let out a sigh, and started to speak.

“Minhae,” she said softly. “Let’s go.” Minhae gave Seohyun slow, small nod before dully walking out of the car. The pair walked until they reached the side of the building, before Seohyun suddenly stopped, startling Minhae who almost bumped into her. Minhae looked up to her in confusion, not understanding the sudden break.

“You need to come to your senses,” Seohyun said firmly. Minhae couldn’t do anything but look at her in shock; she thought that Seohyun understood her, so she didn’t know why she was being so harsh. “Minhae, please,” she pleaded, her eyes softening, looking as if she was the one about to burst into tears. “He wouldn’t want you to be like this.” They stared at each other for a moment, none of them moving an inch.

“No,” Minhae finally responded, her eyes averted from Seohyun’s. “I-I don’t know what you’re talking about… He didn’t care about me; not one bit.” Minhae felt her eyes watering, thinking about that day. “I thought he did. I thought he really did love me. But in the end, he just cared about himself.” Minhae felt like was on fire; adrenaline was pumping through her body. Seohyun didn’t know anything.

“That’s not the truth,” Seohyun countered, trying to keep a straight face. “He cared about you, he really did… It was all an accident, it was all just—“

“Stop it,” Minhae commented, her whole body trembling. “Stop feeding me lies. I know the truth Seohyun, I know him better than you! He didn’t care about me… He only thought about himself when he did that, I honestly don’t believe him.”

“If you know him better than me, you should know that he truly loved you…” Seohyun commented, desperately trying to change her mind. “The way he looked at you said it all. He wouldn’t do that to you… Minhae, it was all just an accident. It was just—“

“That’s what everybody says!” Minhae suddenly yelled, getting glances from people on the street. She ignored all that; all she knew was that he was gone, and it was all her fault. She crouched down onto the ground, her hands covering her face. “That’s what everybody says…” she continued between sobs, her voice muffled by her hands. “But really… it was all my fault! It was all my fault…”

Seohyun watched Minhae, her eyes softening. Minhae couldn’t stop her sobs; it all hurt too much. Too much for her to bear.

“I’m sorry,” Seohyun apologized. Minhae didn’t move or speak, her sobs quieting down. The two stayed like that in silence.

“Welcome to Kim’s Flower Shop,” the saleslady greeted enthusiastically, flashing a smile to the quartet that walked into the store. Seohyun greeted her back, while Youngjae gave her a small smile, but the lady quickly noticed the tense atmosphere. Shortly after Minhae’s outburst, Daehyun and Youngjae found the two, wondering why they were taking so long; which lead to all four of them entering the shop.

“Quickly, find what you want,” Daehyun instructed, running a hand through his hair. “We’re going to be late because of you,” he continued, giving Minhae and Seohyun accusing looks. They were supposed to meet up there along with their families at a certain time. Minhae just gave a sulky nod, before the four of them split up to look what they wanted.

The shop was very colourful, having a variety of colors and flowers on display. Minhae looked at each one without much interest, her mind wandering from place to place. She couldn’t concentrate; all the flowers in the shop reminded her too much of him, and she couldn’t help but feel sad.

Seeing a red rose, Minhae had a small smile on her lips. All she could remember was him; he would always give her flowers after he found out that she was interested in them. After the split second thought, she put her neutral face back on, and continued browsing the shop.

After thinking for a while, Minhae settled on buying white tulips. She still remembered it like it was yesterday; he tried to impress her by knowing the language of flowers. It was cute, but he failed miserably trying to. Minhae figured that what she wanted to say was sorry, so she chose the white tulip, even over the purple hyacinth and daffodil. She didn’t care if it was out of place; she just wanted him to know how she felt.

When the four finished buying their respective flowers, they returned back to their car, sitting in the same seats as before. Minhae rested her head on the window, staring out into the snow, thinking about what it could've been. Before she knew it, she drifted off to a deep slumber.

Author's note: And the first cameo goes to . . . SNSD'S Seohyun, yay! I couldn't think of anyone else to fill in that role, maybe there's someone else, but she was the first person who came to mind, haha.
You can probably already tell what happened, but mystery is not the point! It's writing a nice and heartfelt story, and let's hope I can achieve that, haha.
