Prologue.

The soft melody from the music box resonated through out the dark room. In this dark room was a grand mirror. It was one of the most beautiful mirrors ever crafted. Its frames were made of pure gold, ornately designed to emphasize its grandiose beauty. The mirror itself was believed to be made from a very rare crystal. Rumor had it that whoever looks upon the mirror would be able to see whatever it was their hearts desired, of course there really was no proof of this rumor for no one had ever been able to look upon the mirror before. This mirror was made as a gift for a young maiden. This maiden was renowned to be the fairest and most beautiful maiden to have ever existed and as such, she was deemed to deserve only the most beautiful and grandest possessions.

The maiden’s parents were the wealthiest people in their fair village. The maiden’s father was a shrewd business man whilst the maiden’s mother hailed from nobility. Wherever they went people reveled in awe of them. The maiden was the most prized treasure of the wealthy pair and they did not allow just anyone to look upon their precious child, because of this, the maiden grew up alone. Her only company was that of the mirror her parents had gifted her.

Every day the maiden would look upon the mirror and see a world vastly different from her own. Reflected upon the mirror was the freedom the maiden yearned for but could not have. The maiden would imagine herself going on fantastical adventures, and with these adventures she would always be accompanied by characters born out of her imagination and longing for companionship. Each of them had different personalities and quirks, some of them were outgoing, others were aloof and reserved but the one thing they had in common was their devotion to their dear sweet maiden. The reason they all bore that trait was because the lonely maiden wanted to be loved so dearly and wholeheartedly. Each time the maiden gazed upon her mirror, she would pour out her feelings. Her yearning, her desperation, her desires, the mirror absorbed it all and unbeknownst to the maiden the mirror developed its own spirit. The spirit of the mirror wanted to take the maiden away so it began to create her dream world and along with it, the spirit gave life to the characters the maiden imagined.

Just as the mirror was about to be finished crafting the maiden’s perfect world, the maiden stopped looking upon it. On the maiden’s 18^th birthday, the maiden was betrothed to a kind nobleman. The nobleman fulfilled the maiden’s desire for companionship. He was kind, charming and wondrously patient. He would often tell her of stories about his travels and everything that the maiden wanted to know. This betrothal brought such happiness to the maiden that she no longer needed to gaze upon her mirror to imagine what happiness was like. Upon the maiden’s marriage to the nobleman, the maiden left behind not only her old life but also her mirror.

For centuries the mirror had no true owner for it still longed to be with its maiden. The mirror was passed down from one person to another. The mirror stayed as beautiful as the day it had been crafted, waiting patiently for the day it would be reunited with its rightful owner.
