What Is Love

What Is Love Throughout the years of his violent and dangerous life, Wu Yifan grew to hate the color red. He saw it almost every day in the form of hot, thick liquid spurting out of his victims and staining everything around them. Red was the color of a horrible death.             Most assassins love the gruesome color. It gives them satisfaction, knowing that they’ve completed their deadly task. Yifan never enjoyed committing murder, but he had no choice. It was The Family business, after all. As you may have already guessed, this is no ordinary family. The Family is a Chinese mafia hidden deep within Hong Kong. They take in abandoned children who are living on the streets and offer to give them a ‘new life’. This ‘new life’ is the life of a killer who shows no mercy. These poor children have no idea what they’re getting themselves into, yet they are so desperate for a second chance in life that they have no choice but to blindly accept. Honestly, Yifan would rather have stayed homeless than be brought into The Family. Once you’re a part of The Family, you can’t escape. Yifan knew the risks he would have to take if he ever wanted to make it out alive. Despite all the cruel words and punches that were thrown at him on a daily basis, there was one Family member that Yifan just could not stand the idea of parting with. That person is his partner in crime, Xiao Luhan. Luhan is the best of the best. People say Yifan should be honored to have been paired up with such an expert. Yifan was honored, but for very different reasons. Luhan showed him kindness when no one else did. He would patch up Yifan’s wounds after a long day of intense training, whispering soothing and encouraging words into his ear as he did so. Yifan was truly grateful to have such an amazing best friend amongst all the evil surrounding him. Luhan joined The Family at age thirteen, only three weeks before Yifan did. They were both trained under the same instructor and went on many missions together over the past five years. During these missions, Yifan understood why Luhan was praised so highly for his skills. Unlike Yifan, Luhan loved the color red. He made sure that as much of it as possible came spilling out of their targets. That’s why Yifan let Luhan do most of the damage while he made sure that no one was there to witness the bloodshed. Ironically, Luhan didn’t look like the killing type. Heck, he didn’t even look his own age. He looked significantly younger than Yifan, when in reality he was actually six months older. His doe-like eyes, blonde hair and soft facial features made him look harmless - feminine, even. Yifan was the one who looked like a killer. His tall stature, toned muscles and sharp gaze made him look quite intimidating. However, his looks did not reflect his feelings towards being an assassin. Yifan loathed it. He knew that there was more to life than taking the lives of others, which is why he needed to leave. Luhan would understand, right? Yifan sighed loudly, sitting up his bed. It was nearly impossible to fall asleep with all of these thoughts attacking his mind. He wondered if Luhan was also still awake. Leaning over the edge of his bed, Yifan looked at the bed underneath him and was met with an angelic face he knew all too well. “Yifan, why are you still awake? You woke me up.” Luhan sounded exhausted and Yifan felt bad for disturbing the older boy. “I’m sorry, Lu. It’s just that I can’t sleep.” Luhan merely hummed in response, watching intently as Yifan climbed down the ladder on the side their shared bunk bed. “Can I talk to you?” Yifan said. His voice was barely above a whisper. Nodding almost immediately, Luhan patted the spot next to him on the bed. The action made Yifan shake his head in response. “Not here. There are too many people.” Yifan held out his hand for Luhan to take and the two boys retreated quietly out of the room, careful not to awaken the ten other boys they shared a room with. Walking down the hallway, Yifan pulled Luhan into the boy’s bathroom, letting go of his hand to turn on the lights and close the door behind them. Luhan looked at Yifan expectantly and the younger took a deep breath, trying to decide where he should start. “I need to tell you something very important and you need to promise me that you won’t tell anyone else. Okay?” Luhan nodded his head up and down frantically. “Yes, of course! You can tell me anything.” Just as Yifan opened his mouth to speak again, he could have sworn he heard something. It sounded like the door opening, but Luhan didn’t seem to notice, so Yifan continued talking. “Long story short, I’m leaving T
