As long as I'm with you

Luhan wouldn’t stop rubbing the palms of his hands on his pants, feeling more nervous than it would ever be recommended or needed. For the nth time, he glanced at the watch on his wrist, his legs shaking in anticipation as he looked at the door of the coffee shop. Minseok was still in time but he honestly couldn’t wait.

Luhan met Minseok almost two years ago when they both joined the football team in their freshmen year of college. To be completely honest, Luhan didn’t even notice Minseok existed throughout the first year of college despite the fact that they were teammates. Minseok wasn’t exactly the social and talkative guy and he didn’t exactly look good with his bangs constantly falling over his eyes; that’s why he frequently went by unnoticed.

Then in their summer holidays, Minseok had a dramatical change and went back to college with a brand new short haircut, exposing his round face for the first time. Many people started noticing him more after this but Luhan was not one of them yet.

Minseok had always played in defence in the 1st year and it should have stayed that way for his 2nd year in the team. But no. The coach put him in the attack, next to Luhan, who Minseok would have to cope with and support. It worked nicely despite the drastic change of positions for Minseok and the two inevitably learned about how to work together, discussing the coach’s tactics whenever needed. But this still wasn’t what brought them together. Teammates that play in similar positions don’t have to be friends, do they?

The decisive moment happened at the end of one of their practices.

Luhan was sitting down in the locker rooms, running a towel over his sweaty forehead, when Minseok and two others came in. The last two were laughing while Minseok puffed his cheeks like he was about to explode and when he was unable to keep the air in for any longer, Minseok laughed and smiled as well, his brown eyes suddenly being almost completely hid by his eyelids as the corner of his lips and cheeks turned up. This was the very first time Luhan’s heart skipped a beat because of Minseok.

The short male walked to his own place and sat down, Luhan’s attention following him. Their eyes met and Minseok smiled once again, but this time, for Luhan’s eyes only. They weren’t that far from each other.

“You did well today, Luhan.”

And even six months after these words were said, Luhan still thinks this is the dumbest way to fall for anyone. Minseok. Was it because the way he smiled or because he smiled only at Luhan? Was it because of that simple compliment? Was it because...Luhan was just completely crazy?

Luhan didn’t really care. After a while, he just wanted to get closer to Minseok because he felt like he had wasted a terrible amount of time.

Luhan is absolutely sure that Minseok thought he was a creep at first because if before he almost didn’t talk to Minseok, after that smile, he followed him around everywhere...discreetly (or that’s what he thought).

Minseok wasn’t a fool and later he confessed to Luhan that he noticed his changes very well, even if he wasn’t sure why he was different. He didn’t have to wait much to find out though.

They got close to each other quickly and Luhan fell harder with every word that came out of Minseok’s mouth, with every smile, every touch, every celebration after a goal… Luhan almost lost control once when he held Minseok in his arms after their team scored.  Their faces were so close to each other that Luhan had to gulp down his own feeling to not kiss Minseok in front of everyone. But the weirdest thing about everything was that Minseok looked like he wanted to do the same in that moment.

Years later, Luhan and Minseok still can’t get to an agreement about who kissed who in the locker room a few days after that football match. The only obvious thing about that day is that they kissed and they were in love with each other. They made sure to voice that out quickly, whispering, holding each other tight, their lips almost touching. Damn, Luhan absolutely loved the way Minseok fit so perfectly against his body.

Four months went by since then. Their love for each other only grew. They went to each other’s houses, had an uncountable number of dates and study sessions. All of this after school or because they met each other randomly on the streets.

This was the first time Luhan had invited Minseok to an official and planned date and he couldn’t stop wondering if he should be so nervous about it.

Luhan glanced at his watch one more time and when he looked up, he saw Minseok pushing the door of the coffee shop open. Luhan smiled brightly and stood up, waiting for the other to come closer at the same time he stepped forward.

“Minnie.” Luhan called. It was a fight to convince Minseok to accept that nickname. It made him feel small compared to the other. Luhan convinced him with time that fact wasn’t necessarily bad.

“Luhan.”

They stopped in front of each other for a moment, unsure of what to do. They want to kiss, but they’re in public so they just lean forward and hug, Luhan’s lips touching Minseok’s neck briefly and Minseok’s hand keeping a tight grip on Luhan’s shirt.

“I missed you.” Minseok whispers when they part.

“I don’t have to say it was ten times worse for me, right?” They sat down and Minseok rolled his eyes at his boyfriend’s words.

“Why are you always so sure that you love me more?”

“Because I fell in love with you first.”

“So?” Minseok chuckled.

“So that gives me the right to say whatever I want.” Luhan searches for Minseok’s feet under the table, trapping them between his. “And I really wish I could kiss you right now.”

“I’m not the one stopping you.”

Oh, they knew that very well.

The maid came to take their order and quickly came back with their coffees and cupcakes. They ate in silence like they usually do in public. They like the meaningful stares they trade and the way they seem so be trapped in their own world. Luhan and Minseok only wish they could touch each other more.

Luhan paid for the bill.

“I was the one inviting you. It’s only fair for me to pay.”

“You know very well I don’t like that.” Minseok frowned. “It makes it feel like-”

“I’m your sugar daddy? I don’t really mind that.”

Luhan definitely got a bruise when Minseok hit his arm so hard it echoed through the shop.

“I don’t need a sugar daddy.” Minseok mumbled, looking down at his lap while another waiter took the money. “I can take care of myself.”

“Yeah, yeah, right.” That was the perfect time to remember Minseok of that time he got sick because of his own stupidity (Minseok thought it was a good idea to run around in the rain) and Luhan took care of him.

Luhan had everything planned next. Everything had to be perfect.

They walked out of the coffee shop and went to the city’s park, where many trees can give them the shadow they need. Whenever there’s no one around, Luhan takes Minseok’s hand in his.

“You’re freezing!” Luhan complains, quickly using his other hand to warm it up.

“You know that’s normal for me. They’ll warm up eventually.”

“That doesn’t mean I want your hands to be cold. Come here.” Luhan took Minseok’s hand and put it inside the pocket of his jacket next to his own. “And don’t complain.”

“I didn’t complain.” Minseok leaned his head on Luhan’s shoulder. “I kind of like it.”

When that hand was warm, Luhan moved to the other side of Minseok and put the other hand in his pocket.

“Keep the other in your pocket so that it doesn’t get cold again.”

“Before you wanted to be my sugar daddy.” Minseok looked up at Luhan. “Now you’re mothering me. Are you sure we should be dating?”

“Definitely. I’m just training to when we have our own kids.”

“I’m a man.”

“A miracle can happen…”

“You’re crazy.”

“I’m in love.”

Minseok yelped when Luhan suddenly pulled him to the side and against a tree, hiding their bodies behind the trunk.

“What are you doing?” Minseok asked, his hand already moving up the back of Luhan’s neck.

“Loving you.”

“You’re so damn cheesy today.”

Luhan kissed his boyfriend gently, holding Minseok’s waist between his arms as moved his lips slowly. He agreed with Minseok. Luhan was being incredibly cheesy but he couldn’t help it. He loved Minseok too much.

A soft blow of wind caressed their skins and they pulled each other closer, seeking for the heat they so  badly needed. Good grief, Luhan’s mouth was so good that day.

They only pulled apart when the sound of children giggling was heard from a few meters away. Hot air caressed their faces as they breathed in and out deeply, resting their foreheads together.

“We should get going.” Luhan whispered, intertwining their hands together.

“Yeah…”

As it is known, Luhan had everything planned for the day. That’s why he chose that coffee and that park: the movie theatre was at a mall nearby.

Luhan could picture everything in his head. They were going to sit at the back, hidden from everyone else, alone. They would be watching a romantic movie but they wouldn’t pay much attention about it, just focusing on each other. That was how Luhan imagined it. But reality is completely different and that's when everything started going wrong.

Minseok paid for the popcorns (Luhan should have seen this as a sign that something was wrong) and they headed for their room: it was completely full. Their seats were still free though so they sat down at the back, as they requested, but they had company. There was an old couple at Luhan's left side and a family with two kids at Minseok's left. It became quite obvious that the couple wouldn't be able to do anything: not even a single kiss would be traded during the whole session. But as if that wasn't bad enough, the movie , the old man kept clearing his throat and coughing throughout the whole movie and the kids kept moving in their seats, bothering everyone else. Luhan was never happier than when the credits started being shown and the lights were again. They got out of the room and the mall quickly, needing fresh air.

"It wasn't that bad." Minseok said, smiling at Luhan. "The movie was good."

"You don't need to lie, I was there too."

"But that's not a reason to get upset. It's okay, Lu." Minseok held his boyfriend's hand discreetly. "The day is not over yet, is it?"

"No, but-"

"Come on." Minseok nudged Luhan's side. "Where are we going next?" He pressed the space between Luhan's eyebrows gently. "And please stop sulking." How could Luhan not do what he was being told?

"Okay." Luhan grinned widely, forgetting about the past and focusing on the future. "I think I'm supposed to take you out for dinner now."

"That sounds wonderful." There was still a rather long way to go till Luhan's car but time really flies when they are together, especially when they had just gone through a nerve-wrecking movie session. Inside the car, hidden by the shadows, they took their time tasting the popcorns out of each other's lips. Only when the heat started rising Luhan took the wheel and drove them to their destination.

"What do you mean our table isn't ready yet? I made a reservation!" Luhan incredulously said, looking at the awkward and nervous waiter in front of him.

"I know and I'm really sorry, sir. We're crowded today and we thought it would be okay to give your table to someone else since there was time till your reservation but the couple is taking more time than we thought." The man took a deep breath after saying all that in one go.

"That is not a plausible reason! I made a reservation for now."

"I'm really sorry, Sir. We'll try to do our best to get you a table."

"Oh, you will or I guess I’ll have to call your boss and maybe write down a few words in that book I’m sure you have." The waiter turned pale and he quickly apologised again before running to get them a table as Luhan impatiently tapped his foot against the floor.

"Calm down, Lu." Minseok rubbed his lover's arm. "It's okay. We can wait." Luhan groaned incoherently and looked at his watch.

5, 10, 15 minutes. 15 whole minutes went by and he was pissed. He had made a damn reservation with anticipation! Luhan was about to do something about it when the waiter came back and guided them to the table: one at the back. Luhan only accepted that crappy table because Minseok insisted.

"See? It was not that bad!" Minseok tried to see things from a positive perspective but it only partially succeeded to take the frown away from Luhan's face.

"The worst is yet to come..." Luhan muttered to himself, quickly regretting being so negative because things really did get worse. They told the waiter their orders and he brought them appetisers that were actually really good. But then the food seemed to never get ready and when Luhan saw people that had arrived later getting served first he called the waiter. Not that much time later, the waiter brought them the news that their order had been forgotten. The waiter apologised. Luhan seemed to be about to explode with rage.

"Lu, it's alright." Minseok tried to assure him he was being sincere but Luhan wouldn't even let him hold his hand when he tried.

"It's not. It is definitely not alright!" In total, they probably waited for a whole hour till the food was brought. Neither Minseok not Luhan showed much interest in eating but they did it anyway despite the cold atmosphere. Luhan was sure that day had been terrible.

Luhan paid for the dinner and Minseok didn’t even protest, afraid that the other would start scowling even more. Minseok couldn’t help but feel bad though because he knew his boyfriend was disappointed and frustrated about how the day turned out, even if Minseok didn’t really mind it. It was enough to spend some time with Luhan, really.

They headed back to Luhan’s car and then drove to Minseok’s apartment. If Luhan had anything else planned, he didn’t voice it out.

Luhan parked the car and the two let the silent sink between them even more. Without the sound of the motor working, it felt like everything was ten times worse. Eventually, a loud sigh was heard and Minseok felt the weight of Luhan’s head on his shoulder while pressing his face against his neck.

“I’m sorry, Minnie.” Luhan whispered, his hand holding onto Minseok’s jacket. “Nothing went as I planned for us today.”

Minseok already knew why his boyfriend was so upset but he couldn’t help but smile, running a hand through Luhan’s hair.

“You have nothing to apologize for. It was not your fault and despite what you’re thinking, it wasn’t that bad, okay?”

“But I wanted it to be perfect. I wanted our first real date to be perfect.”

“We had so many dates already, Luhan. Just because we didn’t actually plan them two weeks before, it doesn’t mean they are not dates. And all of those were perfect, weren’t they ?” Luhan hesitated for a moment but eventually nodded. “So why are you getting so upset over one day? It doesn’t really matter, Lu.” Minseok kissed the top of Luhan’s head. “I won’t love you any less.”

“I’m not so sure about that.” Luhan chuckled lightly when he felt Minseok’s soft slap on his shoulders.

“Don’t be stupid. I love you, Luhan.” Minseok raised Luhan’s head and pressed their lips together, gently, softly, slowly. “Nothing is going to change that.”

“I love you too.” Luhan pecked Minseok’s lips. “But that won’t change the fact that today’s date was terrible.”

Minseok rolled his eyes at his boyfriend’s stubbornness before looking at him attentively, thinking. He ended up sighing and kissing Luhan again, slightly harder this time, holding the back of his neck and pulling him closer and deeper till he heard Luhan letting out a surprised and satisfied moan.

“Do you…” Minseok run his tongue over his own lips, his nose rubbing against Luhan’s softly. “Do you wanna spend the night?”

Luhan’s face quickly brightened up, Minseok’s words easily succeeding.

“What about your parents?”

Minseok smirked and he let his hand run down over Luhan’s chest, pressing him back against the seat with strength.

“I guess you’ll have to be quiet.”

Luhan smiled widely.

“I ing love you.”

“I love you too, Lu.”
