Everthing I Didn't Say

Jimin woke up to the sound of his alarm going off; loud annoying beeping sound filling the whole room. He lazily got up, ruffled his hair for a little bit before turning the device off. There was silence. It was 6:00 in the morning.

He went to his kitchen and made himself a cup of coffee; his usual morning coffee. Jimin wasn’t the type to eat breakfast; his coffee was enough but today was different. Today was, somewhat, special. He managed to cook himself one scrambled egg. That was all he could do after all.

Taking a small sip from his coffee, he stood up from his seat and walked towards the living room. With the cup still in his hand, he examined the room and smiled. He’s had this apartment for almost five years now but he could still clearly remember the day he moved into this place like it just happened a few weeks ago.

-

“Wow, Jimin. This is a really good place!” Nara said as she put the box she was carrying on the floor of the half-furnished apartment.

“Isn’t it a little too small though?” Jimin asked. He was looking around when she stopped to look at Nara, shooting her a lopsided smile.

“Are you kidding me? Have you seen my place? This is pretty huge for only one person to live in.” Nara answered, rather excited.

Jimin just laughed at her enthusiasm.

“I mean, this is definitely good for two people. Do you want me to stay with you? Do you want to live together?” She was swaying side to side while holding onto his arm.

“Ya, we already talked about this. Do you want your father to kill me?” He placed his pointer finger in the middle of her forehead and lightly pushed it. She responded by narrowing her eyes and faking a frown. “We can live together after we get married.” He added, instantly changing the frown that was on her face into a smile. A smile that was so bright and beautiful that he couldn’t help but to smile back.

-

If you ask me when I was the happiest, I would say it was the day we both decided to move to Seoul to chase our dreams together. You were finally able to enroll in a music school to pursue your dream of becoming the greatest violinist there is. And I, also, got to enroll in a dance school where I could finally embrace my passion for dancing. It felt so amazing, there was nothing more that I could have asked for.

-

Jimin went back to his room and placed his cup of unfinished coffee on his bedside table. He then took off his shirt as he slowly walked and entered the bathroom to take a shower.

Unlike most guys, Jimin took long in the shower; 20 minutes the shortest. People who knew him believed that he had some beauty rituals but he only enjoyed the feeling of warm water trickling down his body a little too much.

-

“Ya, Park Jimin! What’s taking you so long? We have to go!” Nara loudly said while knocking hardly on the door. “I swear if you don’t come out now, I’m leaving first.” And by time she crossed her arms,

A half- Jimin opens the bathroom door. The sight of his upper body left her in total astonishment. She quickly looked away and cleared when she realized she was staring too long. “Cover up, will you?”

“I’m not a girl. So if you didn’t know, we do it like this. We only cover the bottom half of our body.” He joked.

Nara didn’t find it funny at all.

“And by the way, I need to change into my clothes. Did you want to leave? Or did you want to stay for the show?” He teased. He was, without doubt, enjoying this.

Nara didn’t even have to respond as she hastily left the room. But not before sending him a disgusted look.

-

Jimin, who was now done taking a shower, smiled at the empty room.

-

I loved teasing you and poking fun at you in every way possible but you didn’t like that. You always rolled your eyes every time I told you it was my way of showing my affection. You never believed me; but it really was. I loved how your face scrunched up whenever you got angry. And this might sound cheesy but when you were angry, I always found a good enough reason to cuddle with you.

-

Already dressed up in his grey tux, Jimin stood in front of his mirror to fix his tie. “Hold front of knot… pass through loop in front…” He mumbled as he tried to remember the instructions Namjoon told him the other day. He was successful in the first try so he gave his own reflection a proud and content smile.

Jimin was in the middle of doing his hair when his doorbell rang twice. “Just a second.” He practically screamed as he was still in his room, quickly brushing his hair up. He came to the door and opened it, only to be attacked by a hug and a light smack on the back from two of his best friends, Hoseok and Jungkook.

“Wow hyung, you look good. That’s a first.” The youngest of the three said. Jungkook liked to tease Jimin, it was usually about his height or his face and the older guy would grab the younger’s collar and would pretend to throw him a punch. It always ended in a playful fight between the two.

“Ya, come on. Stop it.” Hoseok then stepped between the two guys and broke them apart. “Are you ready?” He asked Jimin, who nodded while still laughing. “Then let’s go or we’re going to be late.”

The three of them got into the car with Hoseok in the driver’s seat, Jimin in the passenger’s seat and Jungkook in the backseat. On the way to the place where they were supposed to be at, they talked about every possible topic they could muster until a song they all liked came to the radio. They were dancing along and singing along to the lyrics; like they were actually having a concert inside the car. It was Sistar’s Touch my Body. They were just getting crazier when Jimin heard a faint sound coming from his pocket. He asked Hoseok to turn the volume down for a little bit as he took his phone out to see who was calling.

Jungkook and Hoseok looked at each other when they both heard Jimin’s ringtone.

“Hello? Ah yeah hyung. We’re almost there.” Jimin said to the person on the other line. “Okay. We’ll see you in a while.” He hung up and put his phone back into his pocket.

“Who was that?” Jungkook asked.

“Jin hyung. He said we should hurry up, it’s gonna start soon.”

“Mm.” Jungkook just nodded as a response.

And it suddenly became awkwardly quiet.

“So…” Hoseok started, not taking his eyes off the road. “You still have that as your ringtone, huh?”

Jimin felt his breath hitch. “Huh? Ah, y-yeah.” He thought they didn’t notice.

Hoseok didn’t say anything else but instead, gave Jimin a soft squeeze on the shoulder.

-

“I’m hungry.” Nara, who was all nuzzled up to Jimin, said. They were in his apartment, cozily positioned on the couch where they just finished watching a movie. “Can you make me something good to eat?” She lifted her head from his shoulder and looked at him.

“You know I can only make scrambled eggs, right?” Jimin said, matter-of-factly.

“Yup, I know.” She nodded. “And I also know they’re really good.” She added, moving her eyebrows up and down.”

Jimin laughed a little and rolled his eyes.

He didn’t really want to do it; he wanted to sleep because he was tired from practicing. But after much persuasion and a little bit of cute facial expressions and gestures, he finally gave in to it.

-

“Ah, I almost forgot.” Nara said as she took a bite of Jimin’s specialty. “I prepared something for you, wait here.” She stood up from her seat and went to get her violin. Jimin looked at her, confused. She then played an instrumental version of Taeyang’s Wedding Dress on her phone and played alongside of it with her violin. When she finished, she turned to Jimin and smiled, “I know how much you like Taeyang so I kind of learned the song.”

“That was beautiful, Nara. I mean it’s already a good song but you made it even sound better.” He said, cutely giving her two thumbs up.

Nara blushed a little upon hearing what he said. She knew he was sincere.

“Oh wait, can you try calling my phone?” Jimin suddenly asked.

“What? Why?”

“I think I misplaced it.”

She nodded her head in understanding and dialed his number. After a few seconds, the sound of her playing Wedding Dress in her violin was heard in the room. She looked around to see where it came from and right then, Jimin lifted his hand with his phone in it.

“I decided to record it and set it as my ringtone. I hope that’s fine with you.” He playfully asked.

Nara was not able to respond as she couldn’t stop smiling.

“Hmm, I don’t think I can answer any calls with this though ‘cause I’m probably going to listen to it until it stops.” He pouted and then smiled.

-

I love it when you play your violin. I love the way your eyes close as you get lost in your own music. The way your hand moves as you draw out sounds and chords and harmonies. It’s just plainly beautiful and it just blows me away. And in addition to the things I love about you; I love your cute smile, your magical eyes, and the sound of your voice. I love your gentle touch and I love the warmth I feel when you’re by my side.  Every moment I share with you is just special…

-

They finally reached their destination, which was the church. Jimin got out first, followed by Jungkook then Hoseok. They were instantly greeted by their other best friends.

“Where’s Taehyung?” Hoseok asked.

“He’s already inside. Come on, it’s about to start.” Namjoon answered.

They all walked towards the venue together. Jimin could feel his whole body tense up as they got nearer. Nobody noticed except one.

“Hey.” Yoongi appeared beside Jimin and swung his arm around the younger guy’s shoulders. “Breathe.” He laughed a little. “Are you sure you can do this?”

Jimin took a deep breath before he turned to the older guy and smiled, “Of course, hyung.” He said, lightly placing his hand on Yoongi’s back.

-

But I was stupid…

-

Jimin walked up to Taehyung, who was just done talking to someone he was not familiar with, and gave him a brotherly hug. They had a brief conversation before they both went to stand at the right side of the altar with the rest of the boys.

Standing there, Jimin felt more nervous than ever.

-

I was really selfish…

-

Music started playing and people slowly entered the church and came down the aisle one by one. Jimin’s heart was beating so loud that he swore he could almost hear it. He tried to get the nervousness out his system by rubbing his hands together but he failed miserably.

The music then changed and the doors opened once again, revealing the bride in her beautiful white gown.

Jimin’s eyes widened when he saw Nara walk down the aisle. She was absolutely glowing and all he could do was look at her. Flashbacks of him hugging and kissing her ran through his mind over and over again.

-

I admit I was wrong. I’m sorry…

-

He could feel himself loosen up a little when he saw her smile, getting closer and closer.

Nara stopped in the middle of the altar and reached her hand out.

But before he could lift his hand to take hers, somebody else had already taken it.

And it was Taehyung.

Jimin was just the best man.

-

I lost you and I’m the only one to blame…

-

“Jimin-ah, I heard you got a four-year scholarship to a dance school in America.” Nara said, slightly panting as she just came running from her apartment to his when she heard the news from Jungkook.

“Yeah, I did.” Jimin replied with a rather indifferent tone.

“Oh my God, that’s awesome!” She definitely appeared more excited than him. “Ya! What’s wrong? Aren’t you happy?” she asked when she noticed how off he seemed.

“You know this is important to me right?” He answered her question with another question.

“Yeah, of course.”

“This is really important to me.” His voice was low now.

“I know, Jimin, I know. Hey, what’s wrong? You’re scaring me.”

“I don’t… I don’t think I can afford to have any distractions while I’m there.” He continued.

“What are you talking about?”

“I need to focus…”

“You can focus; I’m not going to distract you. What are you trying to say?” She placed her hand on his shoulders.

She tried to shake the explanation out of him but he didn’t respond.

“Are you.. perhaps.. breaking up with me?”  She slowly slid her hands off of his shoulders, her voice shaking.

“This is just really important to me. I hope you understand.”

“I understand this is important to you, Jimin. I totally understand. What I don’t understand is why you’re pushing me away!” She could feel her heart tighten as a tear escaped her eye.

“I’m sorry…” He looked down at his feet; he couldn’t look her straight in the eyes.

“Fine.” She slowly backed away from him, unable to control the tears that were running down her face. She couldn’t believe it. She wanted to tell him how proud she was of him and that she was going to support him all the way. She thought they were going to be in this together, no matter what. But she didn’t think Jimin would want to hear that. “Congratulations, by the way.” And that was the last thing she said before she completely walked away.

Jimin broke down on the floor the moment he heard the door slam shut.

-

He watched with heartbroken eyes as the groom kissed the bride. He tried to look happy, but he was deeply hurting inside. He thought he could do it, but he was wrong.

-

What I believed to be the right decision turned out to be the total opposite. I know I said that I couldn’t afford to have any distractions but I was distracted more than ever. I couldn’t stop thinking of you. I was miserable.

I thought I could get over it and move on in time but I didn’t. I never did.

Just a few months ago, I came back to Korea wondering if you would still forgive me and possibly come back to me. I knew it was quite impossible but I still hoped for it. I looked for you when my best friends picked me up at the airport but you were nowhere in sight. It was stupid of me to think that you were also going to be there.

The boys and I went out to dinner and did what we used to do before I went to America. We went to a karaoke room and had a few sojus. It was the first fun I’ve ever had in 4 years.

We basically spent the whole night just having fun and catching up with each other’s lives. We talked about a lot of things and unexpectedly, you came up as one of the topics. Everybody went quiet when Taehyung stood up from his seat and sat beside me. He was hesitant but he handed me a piece of envelope.  It was a wedding invitation.

At first, I felt betrayed. I wanted to scream and punch Taehyung in the face. But then I realized how much I don’t deserve a girl like you; you definitely deserve someone better than me. I realized how hurt you must have been from all the pain that I have caused you. How much comfort you needed when I was gone. He was there for you when I wasn’t. He took you when I pushed you away. If there was someone out there that would take care of you and protect you more than I did, it would be Taehyung.

So I congratulated him and gave him a hug. I was sincerely happy for him. For you. But there was still a little pang in my heart that I couldn’t just avoid.

-

“Now I’m looking at you, standing in the altar with one of my best friends.” Jimin whispered to himself.

I regret a lot of things; I regret not putting you first and I’m constantly wishing I could rewind to the start before everything went wrong.

But seeing you smile this brightly, knowing that you are truly happy also makes me happy.

I love you, Nara. I always have and always will.

And I know that it’s a little too late…

But this is everything I didn’t say.”
