Summer smiles

Summer smiles

The summer heat was near unbearable even in the afternoon, pouring through the window in blistering waves and sapped the energy right out of Yoongi.

He tried to plead with their aircon earlier but there was no use. It was out of commission and the others were quick to escape the dorm without another word, leaving Yoongi behind with the work he needed to do for their upcoming album… the bastards. And he was stupid enough to come home earlier from the studio. From the very cool, very quiet, very comfortable little heaven.

Right, stupid.

He tried everything from shutting the window – a really bad idea – to moving around the flat in search of a place with a bearable temperature, but no such thing. As last resort he even pulled his t-shirt off and flung it away, hoping the action would help him cool off.

It hadn’t.

He should have just ditched his work and go out with Jungkook and Jin for that movie or hell even with Jimin and the rest to that stupid café the younger became so found of. But no, he was alone in the hot, stuffy dorm with songs he didn’t have the energy nor the motivation to work on.

Sighing heavily, Yoongi tried to focus on the notes before him and even stopped playing with his pens in an attempt to concentrate. No use. His head dropped forward and hit the top of the desk with a thud.

‘It’s hot.’ Yoongi complained to the empty room. ‘And I’m bored.’ he added as an afterthought.

He felt slightly stupid for voicing out his complaints out loud, even if no one had been around to hear it. Or so he thought.

‘Would it be better with this?’ a voice called out right behind him and something extremely cold was pressed against his .

Yoongi sat up straight with a loud cry, nearly falling backwards from the momentum and only barely managed to catch himself by holding onto the desk.

‘What the hell?’ he asked, shoulders hunched up and his breathing a bit heavy from the adrenaline rush of shock.

The chuckle that answered him was all the confirmation he needed but he still turned to look up with a glare. ‘Hoseok.’

The younger was looking down at him with a grin. ‘Yo, hyung.’ he said with unmasked mirth in his voice. ‘That was some great vocal work there, you should consider singing.’

‘Shut it.’ Yoongi snapped, a hint of embarrassed blush staining his cheeks.

‘Sorry, sorry.’ Hoseok said lightly and put an iced drink down on the desk, Yoongi figured that was the other thing that nearly cost him a heart attack. ‘Here, this is from the café. I thought you would like it.’

‘Thanks.’ Yoongi mumbled, taking a sip followed by a hum of approval. ‘But what are you doing back here?’

‘The guys went on to another place and I guessed you would be bored here alone.’ Hoseok shrugged, looking around the room with a frown. ‘Damn, it’s hot in here.’

‘Don’t you say.’ Yoongi shot back, but really he was glad the younger thought of him.

‘Let’s get you out of here.’ Hoseok looked down at Yoongi with smile.

‘Wha… I’ve got to work.’ Yoongi said with a shake of his head.

‘Nonsense, you can’t work in this oven.’ Hoseok argued and leaned down to hook his arms around Yoongi’s chest and pulled him up.

‘Yah! What are you doing?!’ Yoongi yelped, hitting Hoseok’s arm for being manhandled like that.

‘Come on, we are leaving.’ Hoseok answered simply, releasing Yoongi from his hold. ‘And I really don’t mind your dress code but I don’t think it’s appropriate for a public outing.’ he mocked.

‘Stupid, I was not about to go out like this.’ Yoongi said and felt belatedly embarrassed at his state of undress.

‘Unless we both go out topless for the heck of it.’ Hoseok said with a wide grin, earning an incredulous look from the older.

‘You are not serious, right?’

Hoseok grinned wider and reached for his t-shirt.

‘Idiot!’ Yoongi exclaimed, grabbing Hoseok’s hand in order to stop him.

‘Just kidding, hyung! You are way too serious nowadays.’ Hoseok chuckled and patted Yoongi’s hand. ‘You gotta have some fun sometimes, so let’s just do that.’

‘Fine.’ Yoongi frowned up at the younger. ‘But nothing stupid.’

‘I thought I said nothing stupid.’ Yoongi said with narrowed eyes as Hoseok continued to grin widely back at him.

‘It’s a bike, why would it be stupid?’ the younger asked back.

‘It’s a tandem bike.’ Yoongi corrected. ‘And I’m not gonna ride it with you.’

‘Still no fun.’ Hoseok shook his head and got on. ‘Then I’ll leave you here and get the best ever ice cream of the park alone.’ he sang and began to ride away.

‘Hey!’ Yoongi exclaimed, getting hold of the end of the bike. ‘Don’t just leave me here.’ he huffed.

‘Are we playing push and pull now?’ Hoseok said and sent a cheeky grin back at the older. ’Figures since it is a couple bike after all.’

‘Idiot.’ Yoongi grumbled, blushing slightly as the few people that were crazy enough to be outdoors in the heat began to notice the two of them.

‘Hop on then, I’ll treat you to that ice cream.’ Hoseok said and had a minute of silent stare down with the older before Yoongi finally gave it up with a loud sigh and climbed on. ‘I promise you don’t have to hold onto my waist.’

‘Shut it.’

With that they began their ride around the park, the slight breeze from the ride turning out to be the best way to cool down and Yoongi finally began to relax a bit. He realized for the first time that week how stiff and cranky he was, or as Hoseok simply put it no fun.

As they rode by the river Hoseok was reenacting a motorcycle race with a running commentary about the people they passed, and the plain ridiculousness of his words was finally enough to make Yoongi chuckle.

‘Ah there is your smile! I thought you sent it on a vacation.’ Hoseok grinned back at him.

Yoongi smiled back, finally understanding Hoseok’s intention of dragging him away from his work. ‘I didn’t, don’t worry.’

‘Good.’ Hoseok said and began humming random songs.

Yoongi shook his head, because really, how could he not notice how stressed out he was and how he needed Hoseok to kick him out of it… It was really good to know he cared, the others cared too but only their dancer was fearless enough to approach him…

‘What are you thinking about?’ the younger asked.

‘Hmm, nothing… just how much ice cream I should get so you would go bankrupt for dragging me out here.’

‘Oi, hyung…’ Hoseok pouted back at him and Yoongi slapped his back for it.

‘It’s not working, pedal on.’

Yoongi decided to spare Hoseok’s wallet in the end and left it to the younger to bring him two flavors as he rested by the fountain, tandem bike left unceremoniously against the side of it.

The air began to freshen up as the sun sank below the horizon, painting the sky and the water in warm and gentle colors of orange. The wind was picking up as the day began to give place to the night and it carried the well deserved coolness from the river towards the park and the slightly smiling Yoongi.

It was an amazing sight and the rapper couldn’t help indulging in this small display of beauty as the lights slowly flickered to life in the city and in the park as well.

Hoseok arrived just then and grinned wide when he noticed Yoongi’s smile.

‘Here, good sir, the token of my apology.’ he said in a mock serious voice as he offered up the frozen delight like some kind of trophy, lowering to one knee.

‘Nothing to apologize about and for gosh’s sake, get up!’ Yoongi laughed, accepting the cone.

Hoseok just smiled up at him, the setting sun coloring the twinkle of his eyes warmer and Yoongi couldn’t help getting a bit lost in that gaze.

‘People are staring, get up already.’ he said finally, flicking the younger’s forehead.

‘Let them, I’m good looking enough for it.’ Hoseok shrugged but sit up next to Yoongi anyway.

‘That was a very Jimin like statement.’ the older said as he raised an eyebrow but after getting another grinning-shrug in answer he decided to taste his ice cream. ‘Wow, this is really good!’ he hummed in approval.

‘Told you so.’ Hoseok nodded to himself and kicked off his shoes to put his feet into the cool water of the fountain to fully enjoy his dessert. ‘So what were you working on so hard that you very nearly chopped Jungkook up for disturbing you?’

‘Was it really that bad?’ Yoongi asked, cringing slightly at the description.

‘You and Namjoonie were kind of out of it all week but yeah…’ Hoseok said, drawing patterns into the water with his feet.

‘It was Let me know…’ Yoongi sighed, away another mouthful of ice cream. ‘Something is just off about it.’

‘Hmm, I thought the last demo was pretty good.’ the younger mused, eating the last bit of his cone before standing up in the water. ‘Play it to me, I can only tell if it’s off if I dance to it.’

‘What? You want to dance right here?’ Yoongi asked incredulous as Hoseok put his wallet and phone out of harm’s and the water’s way.

‘Sure.’ Hoseok said stretching his legs a bit. ‘Besides it’s already darkening no one would recognize me if that’s what you are afraid of.’ he added with a smile and walked deeper into the water, underwater lamps illuminating his way.

‘You are weird.’ Yoongi mumbled as he shook his head, but fished out his phone anyway and kicked his own shoes off as well. He turned towards the impromptu stage and placed his feet into the water. ‘Well, here it goes.’ he said and watched as Hoseok began his miracle work.

The younger danced seamlessly in the water making the soft rhythm of the song that much more painful and pulled out the deep anger of the melody with smooth moves. It was always an exceptional sight when Hoseok went all out while dancing and Yoongi was just as captivated as any other time… Only the water and the night lights of the park made it much more special as his song became a story.

‘There.’ Hoseok said softly as he stopped his movements. ‘The transition after the second rap part.’

Yoongi blinked, needing a moment to come out of his stupor and played the part again. ‘You are right.’ he frowned slightly as Hoseok walked back towards him.

‘It shouldn’t be falsetto… something more haunting would fit it better.’ Hoseok thought aloud and Yoongi couldn’t help but nod at the idea, the younger was right.

‘Finally, I thought I was going crazy because of it.’ Yoongi sighed and smiled in relief.

‘Next time just ask if you are stuck.’ Hoseok beamed and plucked the phone out of Yoongi’s hand and placed it beside his own. ‘Now let’s see how you dance!’ he laughed, grabbing hold of the older’s hand and pulled him up and towards the center of the fountain.

‘Yah! No way, stop!’ Yoongi yelped but to no avail, Hoseok was still stronger than him.

‘Are you scared or what?’ Hoseok teased and splashed a good amount of water towards the other rapper.

‘Scared? Me? Of course not.’ Yoongi huffed splashing water right back. ‘Just you wait Jung Hoseok!’

And with that their water-fight combined dancing around the fountain began, with Hoseok’s laugh and Yoongi’s smug battle cry as a sign of another successful hit.

It only ended when Yoongi lost balance and dragged Hoseok down into the ankle deep water with him accompanied by a loud cry.

‘Hyung!’ Hoseok laughed as he sat up in the water.

The older’s answer was an unintelligible splutter as he also sat up, looking at the both of them before bursting out to a loud laugh as well. That in turn made Hoseok laugh harder and he fell against Yoongi’s knee to keep himself from falling right back into the fountain.

‘My! What a sight we are.’ Yoongi wheezed out, trying to breathe through his laugh attack.

‘But that’s in total five smiles and laughter against your bad mood… we are making a progress here.’ Hoseok grinned, resting his chin on Yoongi’s knee.

Yoongi glanced skywards at that with a wide smile. ‘Yeah, you are right.’

‘We also should have come topless, just like I suggested.’

‘Still no!’ Yoongi exclaimed, hitting the dancer’s shoulder.

‘Alright it’s still a no but now, before you catch a cold that is, let’s get the bike back and figure out how we are going to get home… drenched as we are.’ Hoseok said, trying to get up only to be pulled right back.

‘Get a cold, yeah right. But first it’s payback time!’ Yoongi grinned, tickling the younger mercilessly.

‘Told you that you will catch a cold like that.’ Hoseok said with a chuckle as he put a blanket around Yoongi.

They managed to get the bike back to the rental place and get back to the dorms by bus in the crossfire of disapproving glances from the local elderly. It was only funny because Hoseok never failed to exaggerate their expressions, making Yoongi chuckle while leaving a puddle on the bus.

‘Yeah, yeah. I heard you.’ Yoongi said, sneezing slightly as he accepted the warm tea from Hoseok – he would not have guessed he would welcome anything warm in that month.

‘Well at least you can finish the song.’ Hoseok tried to cheer him up as he dropped down beside him by the table, freshly out of shower with a towel around his neck and another warm cup of tea in his hand.

‘Is that supposed to make me feel better?’ Yoongi asked, raising a skeptical brow.

‘Well, isn’t it?’ Hoseok asked back, smiling from behind his cup.

Yoongi just shook his head with the hint of another smile and pulled the blanket closer around him… it smelled suspiciously like Hoseok. ‘Is this yours?’

‘Yeah, yours got lost under Jin-hyung’s inability to choose clothes… I couldn’t dig it up from that pile.’ Hoseok said solemnly, cracking a smile when Yoongi chuckled at the explanation.

‘Well, the poor thing must survive for a while longer.’ Yoongi shrugged, snuggling into the warm cocoon and sipped on the tea.

‘We need more force for that rescue.’ Hoseok nodded and a comfortable silence fell between them since the others were not back yet.

‘For today... thanks.’ Yoongi said finally, not looking at the younger as he raised the cup to his lips to hide his blush… he was not the type to say thank you like that to the others.

‘Whatever you mean.’ Hoseok answered, but Yoongi could hear his smile in that answer and he knew the younger understood him just fine.

Then Yoongi slowly fell asleep to Hoseok’s soft humming and stories of whatever he did with the others that week. He could only remember some moments after that.

He knew that someone – probably Hoseok – got him to bed by carrying him there. He remembered when the others arrived too, but the noise level was quickly shot down. He also remembered the comforting smell of Hoseok’s blanket…

He just wasn’t sure if he really felt a kiss against his forehead or not… but Yoongi figured he would find out about it one way or another.

He just knew that the next morning he woke with a smile.
