Foreword

Kyungsoo wasn’t a strong wolf when he was a pup. He didn’t know how to fight and he didn’t like it. But that was what kids his age were doing for fun so he always sat somewhere on the side playing with butterflies or with sand. He didn’t care that he was always doing it alone, his parents were worried of course, but the little kid couldn’t understand how the adult’s expectations worked. So he stayed happily in his little world, showing his mom or dad what he made.

Kris on the other hand was well known in the pack. Everybody knew their alpha and Kris were getting near because of the commotion the little pup made. He sulked a lot, whined a lot and fought a lot. He was a fluffy, walking ball of trouble. Needless to say, nobody said no to him, but that was about to be changed.

It was a sunny day and so most of the pack went outside to enjoy it. Kyungsoo’s mom left him alone for a second, playing with sand, to get him something to drink. It was hot after all. The little boy was happy, building a castle, so proud of himself. But then a bunch of kids his age or older ran beside him and one of them trampled the construction. Kyungsoo for the first time felt like crying. His five year old self looked up with watery eyes only to see not so very pleasant face of 8 year old Kris, with his right foot still on his sand castle. Once he saw the expression that didn’t indicate the kid was the least bit sorry, Kyungsoo felt anger for the first time also. He pursed his lips, wiped his tears away with his small hand and grabbed his plastic rakes. He then started hitting Kris’ feet aggressively until the older fell on his , completely in shock, grabbing his ankle. That was the first time, anybody ever saw fear in his eyes.

A few days passed, Kyungsoo forgot all about the incident. But he didn’t notice with how much determination and interest he was watched by someone. Minutes later little Kris sat across from him on the grass and started to help building another castle with the same unpleasant facial expression. Kyungsoo was surprised, but even more surprised were the elders of the pack.

                                                                                                                        ***

Their strange friendship started in even stranger way, but it also made it special. Till this day Kyungsoo is the only one in the pack, except his father and the elders, that can more or less control him. Truth is, Kris is simply afraid of the small boy. He has something in his eyes when he’s angry, that makes Kris his pants. Plus he’s his friend. Seeing his dearest friend upset isn’t something he likes.

Their relationship influenced both of them in a few ways. Kris calmed down a lot by being around Kyungsoo and matured too. Flashes of his haste personality can be seen here and there, but his father thinks he’s nearly prepared to take charge of the pack. But Kris doesn’t like it. It means he’d be on his own, it means he would have to be responsible for everyone. Of course there are elders and others to help but the decisions would be always made by him. He can’t do this on his own. He needs someone there to tell him he can do it. Which is probably why he got a little more clingy to Kyungsoo when he was around 17 years old.

Kyungsoo on the other hand isn’t the little pushover he used to be. He got a lot of friends thanks to Kris’ ability to make him open up to new experiences. His parents aren’t as scared for him because Kris made sure Kyungsoo can defend himself and be a little pain in the during a fight. That is probably what Kris regrets the most because his lessons are often turning against him and he gets out of their fights a little too scratched for his liking. But at the same time he feels proud.

What annoys Kyungsoo in Kris the most is that he can’t see his own capability to lead. He does this naturally and everyone follows. It’s just that he acts like a scared little puppy not knowing what to do and running away when leadership is being brought up. It annoys the out of the smaller boy but he’s always there when Kris feel anxious enough to dig a hole and burry himself in it. He’ll drag him out by force god damn it!

During one of this times, during Kris’ short term depression, something changes between them. It’s a summer evening, they sit on the ground talking through this little problem again, with their voices lowered and bodies close to each other. Kyungsoo says something funny to lighten up the mood and they laugh quietly. Kris looks up and a thought hits him. He looks at the face of his long term friend and his heart flutters, because he realizes he’s never seen anything more beautiful than Kyugsoo’s warm smile. He tries to swallow but he can’t, there’s something squeezing his throat making it impossible. He tries to speak, opening his mouth but nothing comes out so he just closes it and stares. The eyes that he stares into get big, round and there is a shade of concern written in them.

-          Hey, Kris, are you there? What is it? You blanked out and… - Kyungsoo’s warm voice is cut off by his friend’s lips crushing against his. He doesn’t know what is going on but he surrenders and goes with it. He lays on his back, his arms thrown around Kris’ neck and it feels incredibly right, though it shouldn’t. But why shouldn’t it? He can’t remember. Those lips on his feel too good. A few seconds later he snaps his eyes open. And he remembers. It’s his best friend, what the hell were they doing?  He pushes the taller boy off of him. – No. NO. It didn’t happen. I ah…I gotta go. See you tomorrow. – Kyungsoo runs off into the woods.

-          Wh- what? Kyungsoo, stop… - Kris stares into the space, shocked and overwhelmed. – What did I just do? – he asks himself.

Kris doesn’t get much sleep this night. Many thoughts are going through his head and every single one of them concerns what happened in the woods. He sees those heart shaped lips over and over again, he remembers his friend’s face and asks himself why didn’t he see all this before. Why was he such a douche to not see how he feels about Kyungsoo. Because now he’s certain. All those hours of thinking led him to one conclusion: he is in love, and he’s always been, he just needed that one push to realize it. He also knows that he cannot lead the pack without him. He will not do it. He needs him there. It might seem pathetic, but in love there is nothing unreasonable and humiliating, and admitting that his life choices depend on the one he loves is not something he’s afraid of. But what will he do when Kyungsoo doesn’t want him? He did run away after all… he just has to wait and see.” There are exactly three days to the full moon-the night I becomes an alpha.” – Kris thinks sighing. -“Lucky me”.
