It’s raining outside again. It’s been raining for the whole week and it expressed Minah’s emotions perfectly.

“Minah, come out for dinner!” Her mother called from the kitchen.

Face buried in the pillow, Minah whined and stayed in the same position until her mother called her again.

“Minah! Don’t keep your guests waiting!”

Ah, the guests. The neighbors that had moved in a month ago, those were the guests. They’re a couple with two kids, one boy and one girl. Minah called them, “The Parks.”

Sooner than later, Minah lazily got up and dragged her feet out to the dining room where she saw her parents conversing with the Park parents while the Park siblings were playfully fighting. Everything got silent as the chair Minah pulled out for herself screeched across the wooden floor, all eyes on her.

“Nice to know you’re alive in there.” Minah’s mom said with a smile although Minah knew she wanted to do anything but smile at her.

“Yeah.” Minah replied shortly, quickly sitting down.

The atmosphere died down so in order to save it, Minah’s father brought up the topic of having to deal with teenage girls as daughters and soon enough everyone but Minah was laughing.

“Sojin had become a diva ever since she hit thirteen years!” Mr. Park exclaimed with a laugh while his daughter pouted.

“Minah’s only become a diva this year. Perhaps right before her seventeenth birthday.” Minah’s dad stated with a loving smile to his daughter.

It took all of Minah’s might not to hurry back to her room and hide from the further embarrassment to come.

“A late bloomer, huh?” Mrs. Park chuckled.

“Very late.” Mrs. Bang nodded agreeingly.

“Sojin’s 24 now and she’s still the biggest diva ever. Earlier she asked me for a piggy-back ride”

“Dad!” Sojin burst out in complete embarrassment, cheeks tinged with a hint of pink. Minah studied the girl’s face for a couple moments before her lips curled up at a tiny angle.

Minah subconsciously smiled at Sojin’s cuteness, folding her hands in her lap and fiddling with her fingers.

Once she caught herself, the smile disappeared as soon as it came, her hands found her eating utensils again, and her heart skipped a beat.

“Minah hasn’t asked for one of those since she was a baby.” Minah’s dad stated, “That’s awfully adorable, Sojin.” He smiled, the corner of his eyes crinkling up.

Minah played around with the rice on her plate, an uncomfortable feeling filling her stomach. This always happened when the Parks came over, always. And it always seemed to happen because of Sojin.

Appetite gone, Minah sat back in her chair and pushed her plate away. She could feel Sojin staring at her.

“Done eating already, Minah?” Mrs. Park asked with a hint of worry in her voice.

Minah nodded, “Yeah. I wasn’t that hungry anyways.”

Mrs. Park hummed in understanding before the topic drifted off to how Sojin’s younger brother was doing in high school and then it somehow got focused on Minah’s plan to go to college.

“She’s applied to a few schools already. We’re just waiting to hear some reply back.”

Sojin spoke and Minah’s eyes focused on her, “It’s nerve-wracking getting one of those college letters and not knowing whether it’s an apology letter or an acceptance letter.” Sojin connected eyes with Minah, “I wish you luck in college, Minah.” She smiled and Minah swore she stopped breathing for a good five minutes.

Minah nodded before lowering her head, she could feel her cheeks heating up.

“How cute! She’s blushing.”

“Mom, be quiet.” Minah mumbled, slowly looking up and seeing Sojin’s radiant smile.

It only made her blush more.

It was awkward. Very awkward. Why must Minah’s mother send Sojin and her back to Minah’s room by themselves? Why couldn’t she tell Sojin’s younger brother to come too?

Minah was currently sitting on her bed while Sojin lean on the desk near the door.

Sojin cleared and Minah looked up from her lap, expecting Sojin to say something to start the conversation, but she didn’t. Minah pressed her lips together and nibbled on them. She was never a good person to hold a one on one conversation with.

“So…” Sojin finally spoke.

“Uhm…”

“This is awkward.” Sojin stated before laughing quietly. Minah’s face warmed up as she nodded.

“Yeah, sorry.”

“No need to be sorry. So you’re seventeen?”

“Yeah.” Minah nodded, “I turned seventeen in May.”

“Really? I turned 24 in May.” Sojin replied, walking closer to Minah’s bed and with each step Minah swore she could hear her heart beating louder and louder. Soon enough, Sojin was sitting on her bed too and they were having a full on conversation.

Sojin and Minah got close quickly.

“Did you open it yet?” Sojin asked in excitement as soon as Minah opened her front door, envelope in hand.

Ignoring Sojin’s question, Minah asked in bewilderment, “Did you run here?” Sojin rushed in the house, pushing Minah back and closing the door with her foot. Minah’s breathing stopped as Sojin invaded her personal space, although it wasn’t like she minded.

“Yes, I did run here, now open the envelope!” Sojin ordered, taking hold of Minah’s wrist and pulling it up, showing the envelope to both of their eyes.

“Alright, alright. I will.”

Minah opened the envelope, her heartbeat thumping in her ears but she wasn’t sure whether it was because of the letter or Sojin.

“What does it say? What does it say?” Sojin asked, tiptoeing and getting even closer to Minah.

Minah’s face didn’t look very excited.

“Oh.. I’m sorry.” Sojin’s excitement died down as she thought Minah got declined.

“No..” Minah shook her head, “I got accepted.”

“You did?” Sojin smiled widely before her smile disappeared, “Why do you look so sad?”

“The college is in America.”

“Oh.” Sojin took a step back and Minah could finally breathe normally but for some reason she disliked it.

A smile formed on Sojin’s face, “Well, congratulations anyways, Minah. That’s a really good college and I’m glad you got accepted to it.” But the smile didn’t seem genuine.

Minah frowned, slowly crumpling the paper, “I don’t want to go here though.”

“What are you talking about?” Sojin asked in confusion.

Minah didn’t know how to respond. She couldn’t say, “I don’t want to leave you.” That’d be weird. Too weird.

“It’s too far from my family and I’m not ready for that yet, I just--”

A warm hand cupped Minah’s left cheek, stopping her from speaking, “You’re going to go to the college, Minah.” Sojin stared into the girl’s eyes, tone stern.

“But--”

“No buts.”

“Okay, but--”

“I. Said. No. Buts.”

Minah kept quiet. Sojin’s thumb began to caress Minah’s soft cheek, eyes warm with something Minah couldn’t quite recognize.

“It’s only for a few years, Minah. You’ll come back for vacation so it’ll be fine. You might not get another chance like this from any other college.” Sojin’s voice was soft.

“My family--”

“They’ll understand.”

“But you…” Minah wanted to say badly, but she bit her tongue back.

“Take the offer, Minah.” Sojin’s lips curved upwards and Minah couldn’t take her eyes off of them.

“Alright.” Minah said after a minute or two, eyes finding Sojin’s again. Sojin patted Minah’s cheek twice before she pulled her hand back, feeling a sense of awkwardness while Minah missed her touch.

“Anyways, I gotta head back. I ran over here without telling anyone.” Sojin giggled and waved goodbye to Minah.

The younger girl stood with a cold cheek that missed the warmth of a certain someone’s hand.

Minah laid down on her bed with her eyes closed, feeling the bed dip as Sojin sat on the side.

“You’re leaving soon, aren’t you?”

A short nod.

“How much longer?”

“My flight is in two weeks.”

“I heard you visited it already with your stuff.” Sojin looked around the bedroom, “That explains why everything seems sort of empty here.”

Peeking her eyes open, she got the glimpse of Sojin’s frown as the girl turned her head the other way.

“Yeah.”

The two of them were silent for a moment. Minah watched the other girl closely. Sojin turned but refused to look into Minah’s eyes, “I’m going to miss you.”

Minah was surprised that Sojin even had the guts to say that. They’ve known each other for almost eight months yet they’ve never gotten emotional or affectionate with each other.

Seeing as Minah wasn’t replying, Sojin looked away in shame, “Sorry. That was a weird thing to say.” Her head lowered as her heart felt heavy.

She suddenly stood from the bed, surprising Minah, “Anyways, I have to go.. My brother has friends over the house and I’m afraid they’re going to destroy everything. I hope everyth--”

“I’m gonna miss you too, Sojin.” Minah finally replied. Sojin looked at her with wide-eyes.

“And your brother is mature enough not to let the house burn down so why don’t you just spend the day with me and watch movies?”

“Like always.” Sojin commented and Minah nodded her head, “Like always.”

Somewhere during the next few days, the girls had gotten closer. Closer in both a physical and an emotional way.

Minah’s parents were often out to work now that their vacation days had ended meaning that each and every day Sojin came over they were mostly alone. Most of the time, they’d watch scary movies and eat instant food but the Monday of their last week together it seemed as if they had run out of scary movies to watch.

They lay on Minah’s bed together, staring at the ceiling in silence. Minah’s hands were folded over her stomach before she released them and placed them by her side. Her left hand hit Sojin’s right hand and the girls looked over at the same time.

Heart pounding, Minah pulled her hand back only to have it tugged back into Sojin’s grasp, slender fingers interlocking with her own.

“Are you cold, Minah? Your hand’s freezing.”

“Only a little.” Minah managed to get out despite her harshly beating heart.

“I’ll warm it up for you.” Sojin’s hands enveloped Minah’s smaller one as she breathed hot air onto the girl’s frigid hand.

“You know what I noticed?” Sojin asked, hands still holding onto Minah’s.

“What?” Minah turned her body, silently hoping that Sojin wouldn’t do the same. But of course, Sojin did, their bodies closer than ever.

“You’re gonna be gone before Christmas.” The older girl stated, eyes wandering everywhere but Minah’s eyes, white teeth biting down on her pink lip.

“Yeah…” Minah didn’t know how else to respond. Sojin’s grip on Minah’s hand loosened and Minah’s heart clenched.

“That .”

Minah hummed in agreement, eyes not once leaving Sojin’s face. Sojin made the mistake of locking eyes with Minah.

Minah could see Sojin’s cheeks turn pink and she grinned.

“I thought I was the shy one?” She questioned playfully, squeezing Sojin’s hand in hers. Sojin smiled sheepishly and used her free hand to gently push Minah by the waist, making the other girl giggle.

Sojin’s hand stayed on Minah’s waist, able to touch some exposed skin from her risen tanktop which in result gave Minah goosebumps. Minah couldn’t help but like Sojin’s touch and wanted more of it.

“You know I kind of wished to spend Christmas with you.” Sojin mumbled, cheeks still painted pink.

“Really?” Minah’s eyebrows went up in surprise.

“Well I mean like, my family and your family together on Christmas day.” Sojin quickly said. Minah couldn’t help but feel a bit of disappointment but also mentally scolded herself for thinking Sojin would want to spend Christmas with just her.

“That would’ve been cool. But hey, you could still spend it with my parents.”

Sojin’s thumb began to lightly rub small circles on Minah’s waist and the younger girl couldn’t help but think that Sojin was being very touchy- not that she minds.

“But still.” Sojin mumbled, eyes no longer fixated on Minah’s eyes but rather the girl’s lips, “It’d still be different without you.” Minah could see, feel Sojin leaning in but she also felt the sudden movement of Sojin leaning back as well. She also saw Sojin leaving her bedroom in such a rush you would’ve thought somebody was chasing her. Minah took a deep breath before hurrying after Sojin, who she thankfully caught up with in the hallway.

“Sojin, wait.”

Sojin didn’t wait.

“Stop.”

She didn’t stop.

“Sojin!” Minah took hold of Sojin’s wrist and pull the girl around before leaning up and pecking her on the lips. Minah pulled away quickly.

What surprised her was Sojin quickly leaving through her front door, leaving her alone.

Minah pondered whether it was because Sojin didn’t like her back or Sojin was shy about it every night leading up to her last night. She lay in bed, feeling regretful and empty, not caring that she was freezing and still didn’t pull the blankets over her body.

“There goes eight months of friendship down the drain.” Minah mumbled, sitting up and leaning against her headboard. Her parents were out with Sojin’s.

They had asked Minah if she wanted to go but she disagreed. She wondered if Sojin went.

At that moment, her phone buzzed. Reaching over she read the message from the one and only, Sojin.

“Open your door.”

Minah widened her eyes and hopped off of bed, taking a glance at the clock, it was ten at night.

Without bothering to turn on any lights, Minah rushed out and placed her hand on the door knob, opening the door, she saw Sojin in her pink pajama pants with a tanktop on. It was freezing out.

“Come in.” Minah stepped aside and let the girl in before closing the door. Minah walked back to her bedroom knowing that Sojin would follow. Sojin was quiet even when Minah sat down on her bed. She was quiet even when Minah gazed at her confusingly.

Sojin shook her head, “I.. I don’t even know why I came here.”

“Sit down.” Minah patted the spot next to her and Sojin did as told.

It was quiet again and Minah felt the burden of having to start speaking.

“Listen, if it was about the kiss, I’m sorry. I didn’t know what I was thinking when I did th--” Minah paused midway as a thought occurred to her. What if Sojin already had a boyfriend? What if she had kissed a taken girl? Despite knowing each other for a long time, the girls never talked relationships.

“. I’m sorry if I did that without your permission. I don’t even know if you have a boyfriend or not. I’m such an idiot and--”

“I don’t have a boyfriend.”

Her voice was shaky as well as raspy but it’d been such a long time since Minah heard her voice that it sounded almost angelic.

“And I liked the kiss.” Sojin took everything one step further.

Minah let out a soft sigh, “So what now?” She asked in a whisper. Sojin turned her body sideways and reached up, cupping Minah’s cheek. Minah watched as Sojin her lips before leaning in.

“This.” Sojin whispered and Minah’s eyes fluttered close.

Their lips connected and Minah felt her stomach doing flips as Sojin’s lips began to move against hers. Minah’s hand landed on Sojin’s thigh as their lip locking continued and warmth spread throughout Minah’s body.

Sojin’s free hand gently pushed Minah’s body down to slowly lay on the bed where she straddled the younger girl, lips still gently dancing together.

A satisfied hum vibrated from Minah before Sojin pulled away, chest rising up and down with heavy breaths.

Without warning, Sojin’s lips found Minah’s jawline before kissing her way down to Minah’s collarbone. Minah’s breaths became shorter with each , bite, and kiss Sojin gave her sensitive skin.

“Sojin.” Minah called out mindlessly, hand at the girl’s nape, pulling her closer.

“Hmm?” Sojin hummed, gently nipping at a spot where Minah’s hair would cover completely. Minah turned her neck, giving Sojin better access. Minah closed her eyes as she let Sojin do things nobody has ever done to her.

The December coldness was no longer hitting her. Minah felt hot everywhere. The skin Sojin touched burned with pleasure and the kisses Sojin gave seared with passion.

Each touch and each kiss felt meaningful.

Minah prayed her parents would come home very late.

And they did.

Minah left early that morning without waking Sojin. She kissed Sojin on the forehead, careful not to wake her, then took her leave.

Minah smiled widely and hugged her mother who picked her up from the airport. It’s been two years since they last saw each other in person. A couple tears spilled out before her mother began to drive her home.

“Everyone’s already there at the house. And we also have a guest.” Her face was shining with a wide smile.

“Who is it?” Minah asked in curiosity, “Oh! Is it unnie?” She asked, wondering if her sister had come to visit.

“Nope, it’s someone you’ve never met before.”

“Hmm..” Minah wondered who it’d be. She had a gut feeling it was someone she did not want to meet though.

“Hi, I’m Sojin’s boyfriend.”

Her gut feeling was right.

“Oh? Boyfriend?” Minah’s eyes went wide as she stared at the handsome man who opened her front door.

“Yes, her boyfriend. Here, let me carry that for you.” He smiled, taking Minah’s luggage.

“Thank you.” Minah couldn’t let him see how hurt she was. The three of them walked to the living room where everyone else was seated and Minah almost didn’t recognize Sojin with her red hair. She was hurt enough that Sojin wasn’t the first person to greet her at the door but instead her boyfriend did and now she didn’t seem excited at all because of her presence.

Minah said her greetings to everyone and hugged everyone but Sojin’s hug was the most awkward. Minah pulled away immediately, “I’m gonna go unpack.” She just wanted to be alone.

She took her luggage and rushed off to her room, biting down on her lip. Minah entered her room and closed the door, locking it for the first time ever. Minah let her luggage drop to the ground with a thud while she herself sat on the floor to collect her thoughts.

Sojin. Boyfriend.

Sojin has a boyfriend.

She should’ve expected it, but it still hurt nonetheless.

Someone from outside tried opening the door but failed as it was locked. A knock came two seconds later.

“Who is it?” Minah called out in a weak voice, though she knew who it was.

“It’s me.”

Of course it was her.

Minah reached up and unlocked the door, still on the ground, “It’s unlocked now.” She called out. The door slowly opened and in walked redhead Sojin.

“Hey.”

Minah scoffed. Sojin was obviously hurt by it but at the moment, Minah didn’t care. She was too wound up with her own feelings.

“The thing is I expected you to be in a relationship but I always told myself that you wouldn’t do that to me.”

“But you left me.”

I left you?” Minah asked in disbelief, standing up.

“You-”

“I didn’t leave you, Sojin. I had a flight the next day, you knew that.”

“Did you expect me to wait?” Sojin asked, silencing Minah. The girl took a couple steps backwards before laying down on her bed that contained old memories from a couple years ago.

“Yeah, I did. Sadly.” Minah responded after minutes of silence, “It was a bad idea to expect that of you, sorry.”

“You’re making me feel guilty.”

“Feel whatever you want to feel, Sojin.” Minah closed her eyes, “I’m not the one in charge of your feelings anymore.”

“What does that even mean?” Sojin closed and locked the door before taking large strides to the bed, anger building up.

“It means what you want it to mean.” Minah mumbled.

“You’re being ridiculous.”

“Thanks.”

“Unbelievable.”

Minah snapped as she sat up immediately, “You know what’s unbelievable?” She asked in a harsh tone, “Having your boyfriend be the first one to greet me home after two years of thinking about being back here with you.”

“Having him smile to me while I had to pretend that I didn’t care, that I didn’t feel like crying and that I was happy for him.” Minah’s eyes became glassy.

“Having you not even seem to be enjoying the fact that I’m back here.” Her voice became shaky.

“That’s what’s unbelievable.” The tears began to fall.

Sojin her heel and Minah felt herself breaking down even more.

“Un-ing-believeable.” Minah cursed under her breath as Sojin began to walk to the door, causing her to stop in her tracks.

“What do you want me to do, Minah?” She asked in a heartbroken tone, “We’re both girls.” She whispered, “It’s better this way.”

“Okay. Fine.” Minah wiped away her tears, sniffing, “You know what I want you to do?”

“What?” Sojin turned around, looking Minah in the eyes.

“Stay the hell out of my life from now on.”

Sojin’s eyes immediately showed signs of hurt but Minah was hurt too.

“If it’s better this way, then why bother being in my life?”

“Do you really mean that?” Sojin’s pure voice rang out and it hurt Minah just listening to her. That pure voice belonged to another man who’ll love her now.

Minah didn’t answer because of course she didn’t mean that.

“I said do you really mean that?” Sojin repeated in a harsher tone.

Minah still didn’t answer.

Sojin’s eyebrows furrowed together, “I hope you don’t really mean that.”

“I didn’t.” Minah whispered but Sojin didn’t hear her as she was already out the door.

One day home and Minah already wants to go back to school again.

Minah ripped up the paper in her hand. Marriage invitation. Minah didn’t even know they were engaged. The marriage was planned the week after Minah goes home after getting her diploma. It was like everything was planned just to slowly kill Minah on the inside.

“I’m not going to that .” Minah shook her head, continuing to pack her bags in order to go home.

“I’m leaving again tomorrow to get the rest of my stuff back at the college.” Minah explained as everyone sat together in the living room. Of course, Sojin was there but thankfully her soon-to-be husband was not. The ring on her finger shined brighter than anything Minah’s ever seen and she hated it.

“Oh, honey, don’t you think you should rest first before going? You can spend some time with us.” Her mom asked worriedly.

“No, no. I’d rather get everything done first.”

Suddenly Mr. Park brought up the topic Minah had hoped no one would, “Did you get the invitation?”

“For.. the wedding? Yeah. I did.” Minah asked, noticing Sojin’s surprised expression from her peripheral.

“You plan on going, of course?”

Minah glanced over at Sojin and the two connected eyes. Minah took a deep breath, “I have one extra class that day.”

She could feel the hurt radiating off of Sojin which was ridiculous.

“An extra class? Isn’t school over for you?”

“Well it’s not really a class, it’s something extra all the seniors do for the incoming juniors in college.”

“Oh. That’s too bad. Sojin would’ve wanted you to come.”

“Yeah.. I bet she would.”

Sojin walked in, closing the door behind her, “There’s no class you need to attend, right?”

“Right.”

“Why do I even bother talking to you?” Sojin asked herself.

“Good question because I don’t know either. Didn’t I tell you to get out of my life?”

“You didn’t mean it.”

“You ing sent a marriage invitation to my dorm. Now I mean it.”

“Wait. You still have feelings for me?”

Stupid. That’s what Minah thought at the moment.

Minah didn’t reply but instead she brushed past Sojin and began to unpack her luggage in angry silence. She spoke as she pered one bag, “I’m guessing that means you don’t have any feelings for me then?” Minah called out, taking a stack of shirts and proceeding to hang them up on some hangers.

“Four years, Minah.” Sojin held up four fingers, “It was four years.”

“Yeah, and you didn’t even wait for one.” The younger girl scoffed.

“We wouldn’t get anywhere.”

“Thanks for believing.”

“I’m already 31. You’re only 24.”

“So?”

“Fine.” Sojin said, “Don’t come to my wedding. Don’t have the maturity to hold a regular conversation with me. Don’t even look at me.”

“That’s okay with me.” Minah managed to keep a steady voice.

“You’re--”

“I’m what?” Minah spun on her heels and stared at the girl across the room, “Because I’m a lot of things right now.”

“I’m stupid for ever thinking you and I would be something but--” Minah paused midway and clenched her jaw, “Nevermind.”

“No, keep going.” Sojin’s voice became soft.

“What’s the point? You don’t like me anymore, you have a fiance, you’re almost thirty, I’m hurt, I’m sad, I’m stupid, I’m--”

“You’re not stupid.”

Minah shook her head, now carelessly throwing clothes into her closet, “I’ve waited four years for a girl who I knew was taken since the second year. I think that’s pretty stupid.”

“Look.” Minah began, “I’m not going to make you feel any more guilty than you already are, okay? So. Let’s just forget anything ever happened between us and leave it like that, okay?”

Sojin hesitantly nodded. Minah knew she was going to do that but at the back of her mind she had hoped Sojin would fight for her but she already knew the battle was lost.

Minah gave a weak smile.

“Do you want to help me unpack?”

“You really love him.” Minah stated as she noticed Sojin’s phone background that had once been her and Minah together. It was now of Sojin and her boyfriend.

“I do..” Sojin nodded, taking a look at her background and smiling. Minah looked away in pain, staring out the window as she took a sip of her coffee.

“Have you dated anyone yet?” Sojin asked, stirring her drink with the straw.

“No, I haven’t.”

“Not even once?”

“No, not even once.” Minah shook her head, not looking at Sojin.

“I’ll find someone for you.”

But the thing was, Minah only wanted Sojin.

“You really won’t come to the wedding?” Sojin asked in a soft voice as they sat on the couch together.

“Sorry.” Minah replied, fiddling with her fingers.

Sojin shook her head, “I should be sorry. I shouldn’t have been so inconsiderate of your feelings, you don’t have to go.”

Minah badly wanted to say, “The only time I’d ever go to your wedding is if we’re the two getting married.”

Also known as, “Thanks.”

“If Sojin is happy, so am I.” Minah said to herself before laughing out loud. Though it wasn’t those happy type of laughs, it was more of a pity laugh because she knew that wasn’t true.

“No ing way.” Minah shook her head.

Minah wanted to cry the day of the wedding but nothing came out. No tears, nothing. She was numb.

Drunk.

She got drunk. She drank. Alcohol. She drank some alcohol. And by some, I mean a few bottles. Whole bottles.

Minah had texted Sojin. She knew that she texted her the next morning  when she woke up but she didn’t remember what the text had said. Rushing to her phone, Minah mentally prayed she didn’t say anything stupid.

Thankfully, the only thing in the text was three characters. Three characters that meant alot to Minah but probably not so much to Sojin.
