Lunchtime Introductions

Those With Power

Classes had passed by relatively fast.

Saya found that she had all of them with Jongin and Sehun, much to the two males' enjoyment.

The two boys had taken to her rather quickly, chatting up a storm about anything and everything.  They confirmed that she had indeed managed to piss off the queenka on her first day of school, and they had told her a couple of upperclassmen to be wary of – as well as those who were friendly and safe to approach.

“Kyungsoo is harmless unless you annoy him,” Jongin informed her during their break between their first two classes.

“He has a mean headlock though,” Sehun added in with a shudder, making Saya wonder if he was speaking from experience.  “The guys he hangs out with are pretty cool also, although you would probably end up punching Baekhyun.”

“Yixing – he’s a third year – is really nice too,” Jongin continued.

“Oh, but be careful around the guys he hangs out with.  Minseok is pretty chill, but Lu Han and Kris can be a bit overly friendly sometimes, if you know what I mean,” Sehun casually warned, ruffling his dyed-white hair.

“Taeyeon hangs out around them a lot, though, so I doubt you’ll be associating with them much," Jongin smirked.

His smirk quickly turned into a chuckle when Saya flicked him, faintly blushing at his allusion to her temper slip earlier.

Both boys broke into laughter as they continued to bad mouth their upperclassmen and pick on a fuming Saya.

And like that, her morning classes passed in a blur.

“Saya! Let’s eat lunch together!” Jongin called as he linked arms with the smaller girl.

“Umm,” Saya glanced around nervously, taking in the jealous glares she was getting from the girls nearby, “I don’t know if that’s such a good idea…”

“Great! Let’s go then,” Sehun chimed in, slinging his arm over her shoulders as he cut her off, completely ignoring her protests.

They’re trying to get me killed, that has to be the reason, Saya mentally grumbled at the two boys who were clearly planning to drag her along whether she wanted to or not.

“Fine,” she sighed, shrugging off both boys to finish collecting her things.

While she was putting the last few of her books into her bag, Saya noticed that there was still a student seated towards the back.

Saya had noticed him earlier, his dark gaze, tall stature, and handsome features all being rather eye-catching.  She had also noted that he had chosen to sit in the back, away from all the other students, his face set in a brooding expression.  Now, though, he was fidgeting in his seat, looking unsure about what to do for lunch.

It didn’t take Saya long to come to the conclusion that he – like her – was new to the Seoul Int. High school system.  He wasn’t like Jongin or Sehun who had matriculated in from the middle school.  That meant he probably didn’t have anyone to sit or hang out with for lunch.

No one should have to sit alone.

With that thought, Saya made up her mind to invite the boy to join her for lunch.  She didn’t really care that Sehun and Jongin had asked her first.  If they had a problem sitting with her and this boy then they could go sit with someone else for all she cared.

“Hi.”

The boy jumped slightly at the sound of her voice.  His eyes were wide and somewhat nervous as he took in the sight of Saya standing in front of his desk.

“Hi,” he answered back, his response carrying a small accent.

Saya gave him a friendly smile.  “I was wondering if you’d like to have lunch with me,” she paused and looked back to gesture towards the two boys who were now waiting for her by the door, “well, us, actually.”

“U-um,” he stuttered, his eyes falling back to his hands that were tracing patterns on the desktop.

“Your name is Zitao, right?” Saya asked, her voice softening.

He nodded.  “Yes.  B-but you can c-call me Tao.”

She smiled.  “I’m Lee Saya, I’m new here also, and I’d be really happy if you would come sit with us for lunch.”  She paused.  “And I’d also be really happy if we could be friends.”

Tao’s eyes widened as Saya gave him a heart stopping smile while holding out her hand to him.

“Saya~ come on~” Sehun whined from the door.  “Food~”

Saya rolled her eyes before calling back, “Just give me a sec!”

She turned back to Tao.  “Well?”

His lips curled into a cute smile that had Saya’s cheeks warming up before grabbing her hand.  “Okay," he nodded, "Friends.”

Saya’s smile widened and she stepped back to give Tao space to get his things together.

When he was ready to go he turned to her and they both walked over to an antsy Sehun and Jongin.

“Can we go eat now?” Jongin asked, annoyance leaking into his voice.

“Yes,” Saya slapped his arm earning a satisfying ‘ow’ from the tall boy.  “And be nice.”

Jongin pouted but complied; not before punching Sehun in the arm for having laughed at him though.

When they walked into the cafeteria all eyes were suddenly on them.  It really didn’t help that Saya was a new face in the school hanging out with the new cutie Tao, and the very attractive Sehun and Jongin.

Saya could tell, though, that the majority of the stares and whispers were a result of the vicious glares coming from Taeyeon and her crew.  It didn’t take long for the rest of the students present to put two-and-two together and come to the conclusion that Saya was the rumored first year they had been hearing about all morning.

As they stood there, trying to scope out seats, Saya could hear all the not-so-quiet whispers.

“That’s her.”

“What’s she doing with our Sehun and Jongin?!”

“Already flirting with guys.”

“.”

“She’s cute.”

“Nice figure.”

“It’s pretty impressive that she stood up to Taeyeon like that.”

The comments ranged from insulting to impressed.  Saya was barely listening though.  She was focusing all her attention on keeping her emotions in check.

Her anger at becoming a target because of a brat like Taeyeon made her blood boil.  Literally.  She felt her body temperature rise ever so slightly, a warning that she had to get back in control before she accidentally caught fire in public.

I’ll have to do some training when I get home to burn off all this excess energy, she sighed, already feeling tired at the thought of the lecture she was going to get from her dad when he found out that she was so close to losing control on her first day.

I REALLY shouldn’t be bottling up my emotions like this…

Jongin leaned closer to her.  “Hey, don’t listen to any of them.”

His voice was soft, and when Saya looked up she was met with a pair of concerned eyes.

He must’ve thought that she was concerned by what the students around them were saying, and the fact that he was seemingly worried over her, despite the fact that they had only recently met, caused a soft smile to appear on her lips.

His concern touched her enough that she didn’t even mind that his proximity would only end up spinning more rumors.

“Thank you.  Don’t worry though, I’m fine.”

She turned away to look for somewhere to sit, so she missed the light blush that had spread across his cheeks.

Saya remained oblivious, though, and turned to Sehun to ask where they should sit when she didn’t find a place.

“Hmm we could sit over the- ”

“Yah!  Sehun-ah!  Over here!” a loud voice called from a table over by one of the windows.

Sehun laughed.  “Well, looks like Baekhyun already saved us seats.”

Saya remembered Jongin and Sehun mentioning the boy’s name earlier.  She hadn’t been all too interested then, but now she was rather curious about what type of person would so casually yell across a cafeteria like that.

A very interesting one, that's for sure.

Getting closer to the table Saya noted that it was empty save for four guys, all older, and all…

Hot.

“Wow.”

She hadn’t spoken very loud but the boys standing next to her still managed to hear.

“Seriously?” Jongin pouted, causing a few girls nearby to giggle.  “You react like that to them but not us?”

“That’s not very fair,” Sehun chimed in with an equally potent puppy dog expression.

Saya couldn’t help the blush that flowed freely to her cheeks and ears.  She didn’t get flustered easily, but then again she had never been in a situation like this where she had the attention of such attractive guys.

The cherry on top was when she heard Tao chuckle from where he was walking behind her.

She whirled around to give him a seriously-you-too? look.  He only shrugged and after a, “You look cute when you blush,” he went back to laughing.

“Ughh seriously guys?” Saya whined, stomping her feet slightly in frustration.

All three broke out laughing, to which Saya responded by hitting them all solidly on the arm.

Kyungsoo looked up from the book he was reading when he heard Sehun and Jongin’s laughter approaching their table.

He noted they were walking over with the new girl everyone had been talking about, and a boy that was a bit taller than Sehun sporting styled ashy-brown hair and a rather frightening gaze.

Too loud, he thought with a shake of his head as he watched the younger boys tease the new girl.

He watched as her face visibly reddened from something Jongin had said before the boys, including the new one, all burst out laughing again.

And then she punched them.

Hard.

Kyungsoo ended up coughing, having almost choked on his own spit when he started to laugh at how the smaller girl had handled the idiot giants around her.

“So feisty~” Jongdae chuckled from next to him, eying the girl who was now pouting and ignoring the apologies coming from all three boys.

“This oughta be interesting,” Chanyeol laughed.

“She’s cute,” was Baekhyun’s input as he sent said girl a lopsided smile and a small wave.

“I’d be careful if were you, Baek.  You might end up getting more than you bargained for if you try to mess with her,” Jongdae playfully warned his friend, a mischievous smile lighting up his face.

Baekhyun let out a light laugh.  “We’ll see.  Hi!”

He spoke the last bit louder, directing it at Saya who had just gotten to the table.

“Hi,” she replied, quickly sizing up the loud blonde that had greeted her.

“I’m Baekhyun,” he smiled, his canines poking out in a way that Saya found cute despite his overtly flirtatious tone.

Do all the guys here just automatically try to hit on you?  Or is it just the good-looking ones, Saya wondered to herself.

“Saya,” she said, taking the seat that was offered to her next to an upperclassman with big round eyes and very pretty lips.

Baekhyun’s smile widened, his eyes turning into crescents.  “Saya, huh? A pretty name to go with a pretty girl.”

“Ugh, dude, just stop.  I’m trying to eat here and it’s a little difficult with you being all greasy,” one of the other boys -- a boy with high cheekbones, a well defined jaw, and lips that naturally curved up at the ends -- complained, his voice equally loud.

“Shut up Jongdae! Just because you’re jealous of my gam- Ow!”

There was a loud bang, like the sound of someone’s knee connecting with the underside of the table.

“What the hell was that for you little pri- OW!”

Another bang, this time followed by Baekhyun lowering his head to the table, quietly grumbling and whimpering in pain.

Saya observed the events with wide eyes, trying to figure out what was going on.  She was further confused when the tall boy with a babyish face sitting next to Baekhyun broke out in loud laughter, going so far as to slap his own knee.

“Serves you right!”

“Shut up Chanyeol!” Baekhyun hissed, still doubled over in pain.  “And you!”

Baekhyun pointed an accusatory finger at Jongdae.

“Screw you! You didn’t have to kick me twice!”

Jongdae widened his eyes and grabbed his chest in mock insult, “Wha- why I never- I’ll have you know that I only kicked you once.”

Baekhyun narrowed his eyes.  “Then who…”

“You were being annoying,” the boy with wide eyes –who Saya had been informed by Sehun was called Kyungsoo – spoke up, nonchalantly flipping through his book.

At this, both Jongdae and Chanyeol burst into laughter again while Baekhyun shot them glares before dejectedly going back to his food.

It wasn’t long before Sehun and Jongin joined in on the teasing, earning complaints of “I’m older than you punks!” and “Stop laughing you brats! I’m your hyung!” from a pouting Baekhyun.  Even Tao ended up joining in on the fun.

Saya smiled and rolled her eyes, finding all the energy at their table to be rather enjoyable.  It was nice, not having to think about anything else, everyone just having fun.

“Sorry about Baekhyun.”

Saya looked to her side to see Kyungsoo leaning on his propped up arm, looking at her with a hint of amusement in his eyes.

She couldn’t help but think that his deep voice contrasted in a very appealing way with his youthful looks, a lot like Chanyeol’s did.

She didn't notice she had gotten lost in her thoughts until he called her name.

“Saya?”

“Hmm? Oh, sorry, I was spacing out.”

I seem to be doing a lot of that lately.

Kyungsoo chuckled.  “I had asked you how your first day was going so far.  You know, besides your run-in with the schools Queen ‘B’.”

Saya narrowed her eyes and smirked, catching on to the underlying insult towards the queenka.  “So far so good I guess.  The classes are average, and the teachers seem okay, the students,” she paused, glancing at the boys around them that were currently flicking bits of rice at each other, “the students are definitely something.”

“Hah, yeah, something.”  He looked at his friends who were in the middle of creating forts with their books all while they continued to launch food at each other.  “That’s one way to put it.”

Saya laughed.  The way Kyungsoo shook his head at their behavior, grumbling about how childish they were acting, reminded her of a mother scolding her children.

At least, that’s what I imagine it would be like.

Everything was going fine – the boys had calmed down and were now laughing over childhood stories that they were telling Saya, making her feel more at home with them – when Saya sensed someone approaching their table.  Or to be more specific, approaching her.

She felt the body heat before she felt the tap on her shoulder, so she was already mentally preparing herself to confront whomever it was that had come over.

The first thing that caught her eye was the light pink hair.

Pink? Who dyes their hair pink? she thought.

As her eyes met his, though, she realized that she was looking at a familiar face.  It would be pretty hard to forget a face that looked like that, after all.

Round doe-like eyes, a perfectly shaped nose, fair skin, and a youthful face.  Getting a better look at his features, Saya decided that the boy was way more attractive up close.

And he seemed to know it too.

He smirked.  “Like what you see?”

Saya’s brows instantly furrowed into a scowl.  Well that kind of ruins the image.

“No,” she replied, her voice not wavering in the slightest.

The boy’s smirk faltered slightly, although he kept his cool and easily played it off.

“Really?  Then why were you staring?”

Seriously, such a waste of a sweet voice and good looks.

Her eyes narrowed.  “I wasn’t.”

Saya’s tone dropped a little despite her efforts to keep it light and unaffected.

Her threatening tone didn’t go unnoticed, as the boys at her table had gone silent, fidgeting nervously in their seats, unsure of what to do in this situation.

Saya was radiating hostility at this point, memories from this morning’s embarrassment flooding back thanks to the arrival of the pink haired boy.

The intruder seemed to pick up on this as well, considering he took a subconscious step back to put some distance between himself and Saya.

His eyebrows pulled together in a frown.  “No need to get so scary.”

Saya bristled at his dismissive, and somewhat insulting, tone.  She wasn’t one to react so harshly just because someone flirted with her, but something about this boy really pissed her off – and the fact that he was waving off his own behavior and earlier comments wasn’t helping.

“You were the one who started it.  You didn’t have to come over here.”  She was barely controlling her voice at this point.  Her naturally fiery nature getting the best of her.

“And here I was, thinking I was doing something nice for an underclassman by coming over to introduce myself,” he scoffed, running a hand through his hair.

“Well, don’t you think highly of yourself?” Saya said, matching his tone.

The boy scowled at her, and Saya couldn’t help but blush when he suddenly leaned in closer to her face.  It really shouldn’t be allowed for someone to be that handsome.

Or maybe 'pretty' would be a better word.

Despite his proximity, she refused to back down though.

“Hmm,” he hummed, his breath ghosting over her face, causing an involuntary shiver to run down her spine, “Such a waste of a pretty face.”

Saya gaped at him as he leaned back, disbelief and anger slowly clouding her mind.  He had just used the words she had thought about him on her.

This little...

“A true shame,” he said with shake of his head in mock disappointment.

Saya clenched her fists, nails digging into her palms in an attempt to clear her head before she did something extremely stupid, like say, torch the smug in front of her.

“ you,” she managed to ground out, her body temperature rising and eyes flashing dangerously.

The boy didn’t seem to notice, or care, as he simply gave her another insufferable smirk before turning around to walk back to his table.  His table where, Saya noted, the tall blonde and short brunette who were with him in the morning were also sitting.  Oh, and then there was also Taeyeon, who was looking especially pleased as she watched the scene unfold.

Of course, he would be ing friends with that .

“Oh, by the way,” the boy snapped his fingers and turned, as if he had forgotten something.

Something like my fist in his stupid face.

He gave her a cheeky smile that made a few girls nearby swoon. “My name’s Lu Han.  It’s a pleasure to meet you princess.
