Always A First

Hey guys, sorry for not posting up the story when I said I would, but I don't want to give excuses so I’ll just say this I'm so sorry! Changing the story to be more Krisber focused is harder than I thought. So I decided to post the original version first then, post the other as I type it up in a chaptered fic. A bit about the story it was for an assignment, and for it I decided to write in a way so that it jumps from important scenario to important scenario. I can't remember the name at that style at the moment though. Anyway I hope it's not confusing and I hope you enjoy this story!

Just one last heads up! BTS, Vixx, and Nuest members make appearances in the story and they're all important characters. Like I said the original isn't Krisber centered. Also look forward to mentions SHINee's Jinki, Got7's Mark, SNSD's Taeyeon and Yuri, The Tasty Twins, and many more! Please excuse any mistakes!

Also heads up! BTS's Taehyung has been genderbent for reasons...

Amber had lived near the sea all of her life so that it seemed like every memory she could remember was painted with green and blue hues of the oceans and the golden tones of a bright sun that seemed to always shine down on the small port city she called home. It was rare the day the city was without sunlight and even rarer a day without the salty sea wind that pulled boats onto the docks and sent them away with a reassuring push. The salty breeze was always busy making sure goods were delivered and that tourist were brought in by the dozen.

But now the docks were filled with large ships and the port town was filled with sailors from all over the Kingdom. The sailors had been welcomed into the city with bright music and deafening cheers. War was hardly a time for celebration but everyone was optimistic about winning. The soldiers were all young and strong and ready to defend Cardend and their ally the frozen Kingdom of Norwich from the ruthless Abingdon Army that seemed to be dead bent on taking over all of its neighboring Kingdoms.

They had come out of nowhere and attacked the fierce Kingdom of Draycott and had actually managed to take control of it in only two weeks. The world had been shocked and to that day no one knew what had happened to the Queen or the Princess. Her disappearance had caused distress amongst the other royals especially with the Prince of Norwich, Jinki who wasted no time declaring war on the Twin Princes of Abingdon. And Mark the Prince of Cardend, her home Kingdom, instantly proclaimed his loyalty to Jinki whom he declared to be like a brother. It was only a matter of time until both Kingdoms had made preparations to send forces to Draycott in attempt to take it back and hopefully find the Princess still alive and well.

Prince Jinki had spoken to both Navies with words so carefully crafted and spoken with a firmness that had made even Amber’s blood boil with pride and excitement. Success was guaranteed and she like everyone else believed him. After listening to his speech she almost ran out and joined the Sacred Cross as a Nurse. Her adventurous soul had demanded she be a part of history but her father had tugged her back in and scolded her for being so reckless. “That Prince! I swear he could convince a blind man to buy a photobook. Tsk no wonder all of Norwich’s armies are as large as they are!”

The memory of the crowds lining the streets as the sailors walked through a parade was still fresh in her mind. They had all looked so serious and strong that Amber had been too scared to hand a flower to the passing sailors as the other girls had been. If it wasn’t for her elder sister Victoria she probably would’ve kept the flower, but her sister had all but stuck her hand out for her just in time for a tall sailor to take it from her. His hair was short but she could still make out the blonde locks from underneath his hat that let her know he wasn’t just any sailor but a Petty Officer. The whole exchange had only taken a matter of seconds but she felt his fingers graze her own as she handed him the flower. She could still remember his intense brown eyes that had been so cold at first but had softened for a fraction of a second while he moved to tuck the white carnation into his uniform pocket.

Her sister and her friends had excitedly shaken her, all of them taking turns announcing how jealous they were that such a handsome sailor had taken her flower. Suzy, her best friend had sighed deeply and pressed a hand to her chest. “He even looked back at you Am! If you don’t end up married I’m suing every romance author for false advertisement!” Amber couldn’t even scold her for being such a hopeless romantic like she usually would. She was far too busy scolding herself for not noticing his backwards glance.

It had only been a few hours since they had left the small port city, with all its comforts and festivities. Now that they were on their way Kris could practically feel the tension and excitement that hovered around the sailors and filled the ships. His own squad was itching for a chance to get out on the field and do something. They were young and naïve and Prince Jinki was too convincing in the way he spoke, which made a pretty bad combination because they were all restless to prove themselves better than anyone else.

Restless to die in glory.

Kris wasn’t as excited as they were. He had a squad to take care of; a group of men only a few years younger than him who looked to him as if he had all the answers. And he had to pretend like he did.

Walking along the deck with his arms crossed behind his back Kris found himself staring back in the direction of Cardend, his home kingdom. He liked to believe if he concentrated enough he could still make out the small figures waving goodbye to the ships, cheering them on, wishing them luck and victory. And if concentrated even more he could see a pair of golden amber eyes that pulled his attention like the shores pulled in the ocean. It had taken him a fraction of a second but he recognized her as the girl who had handed him the carnation during the parade.

His eyes didn’t leave hers for a second. She wasn’t cheering like the crowd around her was, instead her eyes seemed to be full of worry. And maybe it sounded a little bit crazy but he hoped she was worried for him.

“Huh, I didn’t take you for a sap.”

Kris sighed and carefully closed the thick book that had been sitting on his lap. “I didn’t realize it was considered sappy to read The Book.” He replied while moving to put The Book into one of the drawers by his berth.

A bright grin formed on his best friend’s face and Kris just knew he was never going to live it down. “That’s because it isn’t. I was referring to the wilted flower you pressed in it. I didn’t know you had a girl.” The other sailor let himself sit on the other’s bed and dramatically brought a hand up to his heart. “I thought we were friends Kris!” To which Kris rolled his eyes and stood up. “Stop being so dramatic Chanyeol. I don’t have a girl.”

“Ssshh do you hear that?”

“Hear wha-”

“Ssssshhhh!!...Listen!” he scolded bringing a hand up to cup his left ear “It’s the sound of my heart breaking from your lies!” Kris didn’t know whether to laugh or to punch the playful giant in the gut for making him think something was actually going on. In the end he did neither and settled for pinching the bridge of his nose. How he and Chanyeol got to be best friends was a mystery to him.

Kris thought it probably happened sometime during basic training when they were constantly paired up for exercises because of their similar built and skill. They became known as the twin towers, but they were only similar in physical appearance, everything else was completely different. Chanyeol was a happy, playful child trapped in a twenty-six year old man’s body, and Kris had the soul of a man well in his fifties. But Chanyeol could be serious, he could turn solemn and be the intimidating man he was supposed to be.

Kris was lost in his thoughts for a while but bright cheers and the sound of Chanyeol’s earth trembling laughter brought him back. Before he knew it Chanyeol’s laugh turned sarcastic and bitter. “They’re so naïve. They have one foot in the grave and they’re celebrating a victory they might not even see.”

X

This wasn’t how it was supposed to be. People, his friends, weren’t actually supposed to die. That wasn’t what Prince Jinki had promised. He had said victory would be quick but it wasn’t. Four months into the war had totally destroyed the joy and excitement they had felt when they had first sailed off toward Draycott. His squad leader, the playful half of the twin towers, had tried to get them to understand that they weren’t going on some sort of field trip. But they had been too young, too excited to see the world and far too blind to see the realities of war.

“Leo! Focus!” scolded his leader his eyes focused in front of him leaving Leo to wonder how exactly he knew Leo was getting lost in his own world. He nodded without thinking and adjusted his grip on his gun.

Draycott was so different from Cardend, and a complete world apart from Norwich his home kingdom. Where his home was always frozen, snow falling even in the summer, Draycott was a desert kingdom. Outside of the main cities was nothing but a seemingly endless sea of sand. It had been hard getting adjusted to the kingdom and to that day he still wasn’t completely used to the dry bitter breeze that blew only in the worst of times.

“Leo!” he felt someone hiss into his ear and elbow him in the side. Ravi, his closest friend and probably the only reason he had survived that long. “Come on.” The other urged him moving to crouch down in front of him. At least they weren’t in the desert, they had managed to take control of Draycott’s largest building, a casino that had at one point been run by the previous Queen Taeyeon after she had rejected the crown and handed over the thrown to her younger sister, the current Queen, Yuri.

But then being in the city was worse than being in the desert. At least in the desert their enemy had nowhere to hide, but inside the city there was millions of places once could crawl into. And that was exactly what the Abingdon Army had started to do once it became apparent that they weren’t unstoppable. They would creep and crawl throughout the whole city, walking camps up with explosions and fires. Everyone was always on edge, always expecting the worst.

“Leo! Goddammit stay focused! Chanyeol said he heard something focus.” Ravi scolded him once more but made no move to leave his side. Looking around he noticed that Chanyeol and another scout had gone ahead of them and that Chanyeol was gesturing for one of them to run towards them. “You go first.” The other boy ordered and Leo didn’t think twice about listening to him. “Be careful.” He whispered and ignored the bright grin that took over the other’s face. “I always am. Now get the out of here before Chanyeol slaughters us.”

And so he did, crouching low and running in between and behind over turned vehicles, making sure to stay out of sight. He would’ve executed it perfectly if not for the fact that he crashed rather harshly into the side of a trashcan, effectively knocking it over and sending bottles rolling in every direction.

Leo could feel the blood draining from his face and his stomach sinking as one bottle seemed to roll on forever until it finally shattered against the side walk. For a moment he could’ve sworn time froze and all sound ceased, the only thing he could hear was the echo of his heart beat in his ears.

He didn’t have time to panic, time to think before he could hear the sounds of shots being fired and bullets cutting through the air. His body on autopilot, he dropped down and crawled behind a flipped car. Somewhere distantly he could hear Chanyeol’s thunder-god like voice booming out orders of retreat and then suddenly he couldn’t hear it anymore.

He didn’t know what to do, where to shoot or where to run. He had no idea where the enemy was shooting from or even how many of them there were. The next thing he could see were feet standing on the other side of the vehicle. Were that close? If they were, there was no way he was going to get away. Was he going to die there? Home had always seemed so far to Leo before, but he had always hoped to go back.

He heard the other solider start to walk and he clutched his gun to him ready to at least take one other person with him. At least for Chanyeol, the kind happy virus that had always protected his squad with everything he had, and this time with his life.

He had to do it for Ravi too.

One less soldier meant one less person that could kill his friend. He’d been so focused on following the shoes and the footsteps that he didn’t notice anyone was standing behind him until he heard the sound of a gunshot, and then another. He blinked expecting some sort of mind blowing pain but it never came.

He hadn’t realized he had closed his eyes until he found himself opening them and looking around just in time to see two Abingdon soldiers fall around him. And before him was Ravi grinning with his gun resting happily on his shoulder.

Ravi was the only reason he survived that long.

And then another shot rang and suddenly Ravi wasn’t smiling anymore.

“No.”

X

Baekho couldn’t believe how much blood there was on his hands. No literally of course but figuratively. He’d killed so many people since he had been sent out to fight personally by Prince Daeryong, the crazy Prince of Abingdon. His parents had been so proud! Their son, their only son had been chosen by the Prince himself to be his personal guard. And Baekho had been okay with it. Daeryong was nothing if not psychotic but after years by his side he had learned how to deal with the blood thirsty Prince.

He had been there the day Daeryong had looked at his twin brother and proclaimed with a grin “What do you say we give our dear Taehyung a visit? I’m sure she’d just love to see us.” And that was it. The last eight months of war and death all caused by a spur of the moment decision by a bitter soul.

The rest of the world might not have known why Abingdon chose to attack Draycott but Baekho did. He knew everything about his prince even things he much rather not.

The Prince had fallen in love with the one person, the only living being who would ever reject him. And part of Baekho thought the Prince knew that she wouldn’t have him, and maybe that’s why he wanted her so much. It came as no surprise to Baekho that the Princess put a stop to his advances before they could even properly begin. He knew because Soryong, the saner of the two Princes had told him Taehyung was promised to Jinki the day she was born. But the Princess had been nothing if not wild and rebellious of other people’s plans, again not a surprise seeing as she was the Princess of Draycott. Or the ‘Queen of Thieves’ as Soryong had so affectionately called her.

As it turned out the arranged marriage between the two hadn’t been necessary because despite all of Taehyung’s complaints she still met Prince Jinki and promptly fell in love with his playful persona. The one that only she could see.

Daeryong had been furious of course, how could someone like Jinki take Taehyung from him? He proclaimed he would take his revenge, and Baekho supposed he did.

Not four months after the war started Daeryong had been fuming for there was still no sign of the Princess. “You go, and you bring her to me. Or don’t bother coming back at all!” And just like that Baekho was in charge of the war, the actual war, not the plotting and tactics but actually leading soldiers into battle. He was good but the men didn’t really trust him at first. Not until he was given credit for taking the life of the Great Park Chanyeol.

He hadn’t actually killed him, his first kill had been a random soldier who had killed his two companions. He would’ve killed the other boy who had sat there in shock but he heard the sounds of oncoming boots and left before there was a chance he could get captured. It wasn’t his victory, but Baekho was going to use it to his advantage.

X

In the end it worked, he had made it as far as he could climb in the military hierarchy without actually crossing onto the line of royalty. But sitting alone in a room with two others, a gun pressed to his head, he couldn’t help but wonder if it had been worth it.

“Princess Taehyung, and ah yes, the infamous J-hope, or shall I call you by your real name, Hoseok? Glad to see you’re both alive and well.” He spoke refusing to show them as so much of a flicker of emotion. “Wish the same could be said for you. But don’t worry I’ll be taking care of that soon.” The Princess snapped, her eyes lit up with fury.

“Do you honestly believe killing me will do anything?” Baekho asked, crossing his hands on the table before him.

The gun to his forehead was pressed more firmly against it and he watched as J-Hope grinned at him, clearly pleased with how the Princess was handling the situation. “You might think it won’t but it will. You’re the real leader here Baekho and your soldiers know that. They know these douche nozzle Princes don’t give a rat’s about them, and once you’re gone they’ll have no leader, no reason to fight.”

She was right of course, he was the true leader, without him his mean were lost. With a sigh he nodded “What do you want from me?”

“Surrender your forces. Without them Daeryong has nothing.”

“What do I get out of it?”

“What?”

“If I say yes, then you or your wonderful Prince of Norwich will put me on trial with the Federation of United Kingdoms. And I’ll probably be hung in some gallows or worse killed off by a firing squad like some common criminal.”

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying if you want me to surrender than offer me something that will make that worth it.” Taehyung’s eyes hardened and she cocked the gun fully prepared to pull the trigger but J-hope rested his hand on hers and shook his head at her before drawing his attention to Baekho. “What do you want?”

“My men are innocent. They’re just soldiers following orders from a Prince like they’re supposed to. No prisoners, they get to go home to their families just like every other soldier.”

X

Amber grinned happily as she ran through the streets hoping to meet up with her friends at the dock where they were supposed to welcome back the soldiers. Everywhere she went bright music played and there were deafening cheers pouring out from all the windows of the port city.

“Am! Over here! Look!”

She heard Suzy’s voice before she actually saw her best friend and before she knew it she was being pulled through the crowd to where her sister and their friends stood excitedly waiting to greet the soldiers with bright flowers and cheers of their own. “Keep your eyes peeled for General Handsome!” the excited girl exclaimed while doing her best to look through the crowds at the sailors.

Amber couldn’t help but laugh and shake her head at her friend’s nickname for the sailor who had accepted her flower. For the last ten months the girl had been coming up with all sorts of scenarios, all of which ended with Amber running off with that sailor.

Before they knew it though enough time had passed so that the docks were clearing up and there was only a few people left. Amber felt her heart breaking as it had never occurred to her that he wouldn’t have made it back alive.

“Amber?” Victoria called out to her when she saw how dejected the short haired girl had started to look. “I’m okay Vic…I’m…I’m…I’m gonna go.” Without waiting for another second she spun on her heel and ran.

Ran straight into a broad chest and a warm embrace. She looked up and froze as her eyes met the same cold brown eyes that filled her dreams since the first time she saw them. His eyes softened the moment they met hers. He gave her a light smile and that was the only warning she got before he was pressing his lips onto hers.

It caught her off guard so she just stood there for a moment letting his kiss say everything he couldn’t put into words.

Not wanting to spend the next weeks scolding herself for not returning the kiss, she wrapped her arms around his neck and brought him in close.

When he finally pulled away he spoke to her for the first time. “Hey, I’m Kris Wu.” She grinned brightly at him before replying “Amber Liu.”
