Chapter 13
Of The Arts and Education (HIATUS)*Really short update but it's better than nothing. Just been very busy lately. I'll be back soon :)
“Lynnette. Great! I’m so glad I caught you before you left,” Seunghyun says, quietly exiting his room and closing the door behind him as to not wake up anyone else in the building. He tiptoes to me because I guess the walls must be a bit thin. I’ve never had a conversation at five thirty in the morning before so I wouldn’t know. “What are you doing after work today?” he asks me, not giving me a chance to ask him what he is doing up so early.
“Probably coming back home, grading some papers. Why?”
“Some of the students called me last night. They want you to come to class today. Would you mind?”
“You have class today?”
“I don’t usually but we decided to have an extra rehearsal since the show is coming up soon.”
“Oh. Okay! Sure. I mean, I don’t have anything else to do so why not?” I say with a smile. Yay-an opportunity for me to see him interact with children. Like that won’t give me an emotional heart attack or something.
“Great! Thank you so much Lynnette. The kids will be glad that you came. Shall I meet you at the school later and walk with you?” It’s an innocent question. Innocent enough. If he asked me a week ago I would have thought nothing of it but now it’s a question that leaves me with a million fantasy situations rushing through my mind. “Lynnette?”
“Yeah! Yeah sure! Please. That would be great,” I say, forcing a smile while trying to pretend that I wasn’t just daydreaming.
“Okay, see you later then. I’m going back to bed,” he says with a chuckle.
“See you!”
. . .
May 15th. It’s today that makes doing what I do all the more worth it. No, I’m not greedy, but when each student in your class gives you a small chocolate bar, a carnation, or even a handwritten card expressing their thanks to you to the point that you need a bag to carry everything, you tend to feel really good about what you do.
Today is Teacher’s Day in Korea. Typically, going into work every morning is fun for me. Sure, waking up isn’t fun at all and most of the time I ask myself why I do what I do however, once I get to school and begin my lesson all of those thoughts go away. I’ve never had more fun than I do now. I kind of feel as if I should be the one giving them gifts.
I finish my day and wait outside the school with my bag of gifts with a smile on my face until I see Seunghyun walking up the busy street. “Hi! How was school?” I ask him as I walk down the steps and meet him on the sidewalk.
“Good.” He looks down at my bag. “I think you may have had a better day,” he says as he reaches over his shoulder and pulls a pink carnation out from his book bag and hands it to me. “Happy Teacher’s Day.”
“Seunghyun!” I squeal, my face probably beaming. “What-?”
“Happy Teacher’s Day!” he says again, more excitedly. “Come on! Let’s go. The kids are excited to see you.”
With this, he takes my bag from me and we proceed to walk to the theatre together. I keep the carnation pressed firmly against my nose blocking my smile because I don’t want him to see how happy he has made me with the simple gesture.
“Can you breathe?” he asks me while looking down at me with a knowing grin. His teeth practically sparkle with a smug sense of accomplishment. I bump into him and laugh quietly in response, refusin
