Ephemeral

August 6th, 2013

Sunlight pierces through my dreams as I start my dizzying descent into reality. I open my eyes to the familiar surroundings of my room. There is an envelope sitting beside me with two words neatly printed upon it. Anterograde Amnesia. I dismiss it as I rush to start my daily routine.
As I walk, I get lost in my thoughts again and bump into a man. He smells of smoke and sentiment.
“I’m sorry.”
He doesn’t look surprised.
“That’s ok.” He hesitates, and then asks, “Excuse me, do you happen to know the date?”
I think. Yesterday was the 22nd so today must be the –
“The 23rd.”
He smiles wistfully. “Thank you.”
I look into his eyes for the first time and they captivate me. They remind me of someone. Someone important. It stirs me to ask.
“Have we met before?”
He pauses before shaking his head.
“No, sorry.”
“Oh… You just seem very familiar.”
I start to turn away when he catches my arm.
“What do you want to be when you grow up?”
