Ephemeral

October 12th, 2011

“What do you want to be when you grow up?”
He sighed.
“I don’t know. What about you?”
I thought for a while. I didn’t know what my answer would be, but something inside me stirred. I blurted out –
“Happy.”
He smiled.
“But happiness is only a state of mind. You can be happy whenever you want. You don’t have to wait until you’ve grown up.”
“But when is grown up? Aren’t we always growing up? Do we ever really fully grow up?”
He pondered the questions as I carried on.
“I feel like I’m grown up, but still young. Like I’m stuck in time, yet time trudges along. The whole world is moving on, but I’m still here. Everyone seems to know what they’re doing and they’re on their path. But I’m just lost in life, wandering aimlessly.”
He was silent.
“You can’t get lost if you don’t know where you’re going.”
