Sudden Serenade

“Ah!  Woohyun stop!”  Dok Mi screamed.  Woohyun had dipped his finger in a spoonful of tomato sauce and finger-painted Dok Mi’s face.  “Seriously!  Now we can’t use that spoon!”

“Oh hush; who eats spaghetti with a spoon?” Woohyun retorted.  Dok Mi’s eyebrows were pinched together in annoyance as she continued stirring the spaghetti.  Naturally, he reached over and poked between her eyebrows without thinking to clear his finger off.

“Hey!  Nam Woohyun!”  She yelled.  Woohyun couldn’t tell if she was genuinely angry or not.  She let go of the stirrer and started slapping Woohyun on the chest, pushing him backwards.  “Stop putting food on my face!  Why would you—“ she paused.  He looked at her as if he was a lost puppy.  “What’s wrong?”

Woohyun laughed and wiped his finger off on a paper towel.  When he turned back to Dok Mi, she had begun to mirror his previous facial expression and looked at him in confusion.  He took a deep breath and decided to do something outrageous.

Just as she began to grab the paper towel to wipe her forehead off, Woohyun slapped her hand away and threw the paper towel on the ground.

“Why would you—“ She began to protest.  Her train of thought was cut off when Woohyun cupped her face in his hands.  Her eyes widened and she looked anywhere but at him.  She could sense him smiling, then, all of a sudden…

He awkwardly but gently kissed her forehead where the pasta was.  A chill zapped through her entire body and she momentarily lost sight.  All she could sense was that Woohyun was taunting her.  He moved her out of the way and attended to the pasta.

“I’ll finish this,” he said and shooed her away.  She nodded robotically and turned to see if Minah had watched.  Minah and Myungsoo had both stopped chopping vegetables and their mouths were hanging agape.  Dok Mi stumbled out of the kitchen and made her way to the boys who were sitting on the porch.  She found Sungjong and hurried over to him, for some reason.  There weren’t any seats left, but she easily plopped down onto the ground in front of him.

“What’s wrong?”  Sungjong asked with a knowing smile.  He watched Dok Mi grab her hair and start panting and he patted her elbow in amusement.  “I guess things are going well.”

“I don’t like it,” Dok Mi lied.  She didn’t worry about it, however; Sungjong could see right through her and lying was almost futile.

“This spaghetti is delicious,” Sunggyu complimented.  “You two did a great job.”

Woohyun and Dok Mi sat on different sides of the table and were not directly across from each other.  However, they both snuck glances at one another.  Sungjong grinned.

“I think it was mostly Woohyun’s doing,” Sungjong chirped.  “Dok Mi came out before dinner was close to being ready.”  Dok Mi sent Sungjong an evil glare and he couldn’t help but wink at her.  Woohyun, who was sitting beside of him, elbowed him in the stomach gently.

“No; it was half and half,” Woohyun said.  He glanced at Dok Mi to make sure she wasn’t embarrassed and continued eating his food.

“You make a good team, then,” Hoya innocently stated.  Both Woohyun and Dok Mi began to slurp up their noodles nervously and Myungsoo and Minah grinned at each other.

“I wasn’t sure they could do it.  Dok Mi got so flustered about half way through,” Myungsoo mumbled.  Woohyun kicked him from underneath the table and Dok Mi continued to duck her head lower into her food.  Sungjong, pleased with the teasing, decided to bring it to an end.

“Let’s finish up eating so we can start the campfire songs,” Sungjong whined.  Everyone agreed and finished up eating as quickly as possible.  They threw away their foam dishes and put the silverware in the sink for the maknae to clean later.

Having noticed the awkward atmosphere between Woohyun and Dok Mi, Dongwoo decided to make seating arrangements.  He had Hoya stall them as he brought everyone else over to sit.  He couldn’t help but feel a little guilty when he saw the look of horror mixed with joy in Dok Mi’s eyes, but he knew it was for the best.  She recollected herself and sat down; Woohyun followed right after her.

They all sang songs until their targeted pair had settled down and were on speaking terms again.  Dok Mi gradually began accepting Woohyun’s flirtatiousness and  Sungyeol grinned in excitement.

“And now, for the final act of the evening!  We shall have a sea-shell hunting competition!” He announced.  “The couple with the prettiest shells win!  1-2-3 go!”  He shouted.  Everyone dispersed and Woohyun and Dok Mi sat, dumbfounded.  They both got up and started walking off, unaware of the 7 eyes that were secretly watching them.

Woohyun found a shell and sighed.

“Do you think this one is pretty enough?”  He asked.  Dok Mi examined it and shrugged her shoulders.

“It’s the best thing we’ve found so far.  But don’t lose hope; we just started!”  She cheered.  She began skipping down the beach and Woohyun admired her cuteness from the distance as he walked behind her.  She bent down, grabbed a shell and showed it to him.  “It’s a conk shell!  And it isn’t broken!”

“Lucky,” Woohyun mumbled.  She laughed and gently punched his shoulder.

“We’re both lucky.  We’re a team, remember?”  She asked cheerfully.  Woohyun noticed that as the breeze picked up, she stayed closer to him.  He then realized that she was cold and was trying to get heat off of him.

“If you’re cold just say so,” he playfully chided.  Dok Mi shook her head and grabbed her arms.

“Nope,” she protested.  He groaned and wrapped an arm around her shoulders anyways.

“Or don’t say it.  Whatever.  But I’m not letting you stay cold,” he gently admitted.  She gulped, nodded, and looked away.  He felt so warm, and she wanted to be in a full out hug with him, but she was too embarrassed to asked.  He, too, wanted to pull her in closer, but he didn’t know how to advance so he disregarded it.

“When are they gonna kiss,” Dongwoo whined.  He and the others were hiding behind a ramp that led to the street.  “If it keeps going like this, it’ll never happen.”

“Patience,” Sungjong hissed.  “Do you know how hard it is for both of them?  Neither want to have feelings for the other, but both do!”

“It’s been thirty minutes.  Don’t you think we should head back now?”  Woohyun asked.  He was getting worried about Dok Mi; she looked like she was about to pass out from tiredness.

“Let’s just…  Sit on the beach,” she yawned.  She fell into the sand and grinned when she looked at the moon.  “It’s so pretty.”

“It is,” Woohyun agreed.  “But you look really, really sleepy.  Don’t you want to get back to the cottage?”

“Yes, I am tired,” she yawned.  She didn’t have much fight in her and she didn’t resist when Woohyun gave her his shoulder to lean on.  He rested his head on hers, and although he couldn’t hear it, his band mates were fanboying.

“Want a piggy back ride back?”  Woohyun asked.  He felt Dok Mi nod softly into his shoulder and he sighed.  He was tired, too.  However, Dok Mi was so peaceful when she was sleepy that Woohyun didn’t want to disturb her.  He pulled her up and managed to get her on his shoulders and began walking back.  The Infinite members groaned quietly, because they were expecting a kiss, and went to the street so they could run home without Woohyun noticing them.

The cottage was in visible range when Dok Mi was finally sleeping.  Woohyun had sung to her, talked to her, and hummed for her the entire way just so he could get her to rest.  He was a little dismayed that she was so scared of him, but he was content to know that he had enough of her trust to carry her to safety.  When he got back to the cottage, everyone was sitting quietly in the parlor.  They silently watched Woohyun carry Dok Mi to her bedroom and they smiled from ear to ear.

“They might not have kissed, but this is quite something,” Sunggyu admitted.  Everyone agreed and decided that they, too, would go to bed.

Minah waited outside of the room so she wouldn’t interrupt Woohyun from tucking her best friend in.  She managed to peak in, however, and was pleased with what she saw.

“Goodnight, Dok Mi,” Woohyun whispered.  He brushed the hair out of her face, kissed her forehead, then, turned to leave.  He saw Minah but ignored her; the whole world might as well know he liked Dok Mi now.
