Warning: Character death, mood whiplash.

I stayed with the patient through the night, when he was at his worst. He had lost blood, but he was stable and there was no serious injury. Still, he was in a state of shock and when he woke up he started calling a name.

I had been through his belongings while he slept so I knew that his name was Moon, but I didn’t know who it was he was calling.

I tried to calm him down. I had been told not to tell him anything about the crash, that the knowledge would traumatise him and hurt his recovery. I told him he was safe and that he should rest.

“Wait!” he said, strangled panic in his voice. “Where is he?”

I told him that I was Kim Taeheon, medic, and that the doctor had told me to wait with him. I told him I didn’t know anything.

He repeated the name. I guessed it must have been another passenger. A little while later I was able to confirm this.

The patient became quiet from then on, but he did not sleep. He spoke again.

“He’s dead, isn’t he?”

His half open eyes were fixed on me, reading every part of my expression. I couldn’t lie to him; if I did he would be able to tell.

“The plane crashed. You were the only survivor.”

His eyes closed and I didn’t see them open again.
