Reminiscence

As Jongdae slowly buttoned up his black suit, the red alarm clock on the brown low side table beeped, notifying that it was already 9 o’clock in the morning. While keeping his eyes on the mirror, he reached out towards the clock and pressed the snooze button.

It was the usual quiet morning in the neighbourhood. After neatly fixing his neck tie, Jongdae reached up towards the top of the closet and grabbed the bouquet of white roses that was placed there.

With the roses in one hand, he walked out of his room and headed towards the wooden door where he wore his black shoes. He opened the brown wooden door with a twist of the doorknob and went outside, heading towards the place where he could meet her. A small smile crept onto his face in remembrance of her.

It has been 3 years since he met her. She had left a really big impact on Jongdae’s crazy life. He had never thought he could find any other kind of love after he had lost his parents in the tragic car accident. She was there when he needed her and she has always been a great company for him.

He could not just forget her laughs and smiles. As he walked on the pavement, he recalled back all the memories with her since he first met her.

He realized that he had yet to move on…

27th OCTOBER 2011

The silence of the library filled the calm atmosphere around him. Jongdae is not the kind of person who liked quiet things and anything similar to it, but he was there because of that one specific person who had attracted his attention.

He hugged his books tighter around his chest as he caught sight of what he would call, ‘his angel from heaven’. The smile on his face grew bigger and bigger as he continued watching his ‘angel’ from afar. He couldn’t believe that he was doing this.

It took him all the courage that he could muster for this one moment. He slowly approached her and politely asked, ‘Is this seat empty?’ There was no answer from her. All Jongdae could think of was what was he going to do after she answered. After a few seconds, there was still no answer.

He then slowly tapped her shoulder and asked again. With a nod of her head, Jongdae immediately sat down on the chair beside her.

He opened up the book that he had brought to the library and pretended to read it, when in fact, he was stealing glances to the girl beside. Oh, the joy of having a crush on someone.

Upon getting tired of pretending to read, Jongdae decided to start a conversation with his ‘angel’. He took out a small sticky note pad from his pocket and wrote down words to start the conversation. He then handed it to her.

‘Hi. :) I’m Kim Jongdae. What’s your name?’

A few seconds later, he received a pink sticky note, ‘Hello. My name is Kim Hye Sun. Nice to meet you Jongdae. ^^’. He couldn’t help but smile gleefully at the positive response from his ‘angel’ who had a really beautiful name, Kim Hye Sun; Intelligent and pure. It really fits the description of an angel to him.

He received another pink sticky note from her. ‘By the way, your book is upside down.’ Jongdae instantly flushed red in embarrassment. They exchanged glances and tried to contain their laughter.

They continued to exchange sticky notes until there were no sticky notes left. A wide smile spread across Jongdae’s face as he walked out of the library and headed towards his room. He couldn’t believe that within seconds, they had become good friends.

From that day, Hye Sun had filled a really big part in his empty heart.

~R~

Two weeks passed and Jongdae became close friends with Hye Sun. Every night they would message each other and every day, there would be a sticky note stuck on each of their lockers. Their friendship was considered the most precious for Jongdae and he didn’t want to lose it.

The door swung open to reveal a really tired-looking boy with bun-like cheeks. Jongdae lifted his head to turn his attention to the direction of the door from his study desk. It was his best friend, Kim Minseok.

Kim Minseok has been Jongdae’s best friend since they were still in diapers. He has always been there for Jongdae, especially after the tragic death of his parents.

Jongdae immediately jumped out of his chair and rushed towards Minseok with an excited expression plastered on his face.

“Just wait for a minute Jongdae,” Minseok stopped him from saying anything first, “I just came back from the airport and I am dead tired right now. Just let me sit first.” He heaved his luggage into his closet and fell onto the soft bouncy bed. Releasing a heavy long sigh, Minseok shifted his eyes towards Jongdae as a sign for him to start talking about anything.

Jongdae sat on the wooden floor next to Minseok’s bed and put his arms and chin onto the bed to face Minseok.

“Do you know the girl that I said I had a crush on?” Jongdae started. Minseok slowly nodded his head and braced himself for more endless stories of Jongdae’s ‘angel’. “Well… We are now really close friends! I am so happy! Hye Sun is so-“

“Wait. Hye Sun?” Minseok asked as he cut off Jongdae.

“Yeah, Hye Sun.” Jongdae said and continued, “Isn’t her name pretty too? It means intelligent and pure, just like an angel!”

Minseok tapped his chin. Hye Sun. Why does that name sound so familiar?

Jongdae continued to babble, “I just don’t understand why she is so quiet.” A bulb lit up inside Minseok’s mind.

“I think I know Hye Sun,” Minseok said and Jongdae looked at him, “Yeah. Kim Hye Sun. She always sits in the front row in the course. Because she cannot talk, she has to have a friend with her in courses to help her in some things she doesn’t know.”

Jongdae was struck. “She can’t talk?” He asked as he furrowed his eyebrows. Before Minseok could answer, Jongdae hurried out of the room.

Jongdae ran as fast as his legs could go. He had to find Hye Sun.

There, sitting alone in the campus library, Hye Sun was reading a book. Jongdae went towards her direction. Hye Sun had already realized his presence and waved her hand as a greeting. Jongdae exchanged a small smile back and sat on the opposite side of the table.

‘Hye Sun-ah, why didn’t you tell me?’ Jongdae scribbled onto the sticky note and passed it to Hye Sun.

Hye Sun’s expression immediately turned sad after she read it. Never had she thought that Jongdae would know about it. She her head to meet Jongdae’s worried eyes. After a few seconds, Hye Sun slowly stood up and mouthed ‘I’m sorry’ before leaving a dumbfounded Jongdae in the library.

It had been two weeks since Hye Sun had been avoiding Jongdae. Whenever he would approach her, she would pretend to be busy with other stuff. After a week of relentless pursuit, Jongdae had stopped chasing after her.

As Hye Sun’s birthday was coming soon , which would be on the 27th of November, Jongdae decided to stop chasing after Hye Sun to continue his secret surprise that he had planned since the very first interaction between them, with an addition of something new.

27th NOVEMBER 2011

At about 4 in the afternoon, after Hye Sun’s lecture had ended, Hye Sun received a light blue letter from her fellow colleague, Kim Minseok. She furrowed her brows in confusion at the sudden letter.

“Just follow the directions in it,” was the only thing he said to her before heading back towards his dorm at the opposite direction.

As she tilted her head in confusion, she carefully opened the letter to see what was inside.

Dear Hye Sun,

You have been elected to be one of the most special person in a treasure hunt. Do follow all the clues given at the specific places to finish the game.

J.

Hye Sun was more confused after reading the letter. Somehow, she had a familiar feeling of who sent it. She turned the letter to see if there was anything else; ‘Moo’s Ice Cream’ was the only thing written on it.

Upon figuring out what the words meant, she instantly headed out to ‘Moo’s Ice Cream’ shop as that was the only ice cream shop that she was the most familiar with.

After less than 10 minutes, Hye Sun arrived at the shop. She stood in front of the glass doors and tried to find anyone familiar in the full of colorful polka-dots shop. One of the staffs who recognized Hye Sun as a regular customer and as a close friend ushered her into the shop and offered her to sit at one of the tables that had Hye Sun’s name on it.

Her every single favourite ice cream was served in front of her as she sat down on the pink stool. There was chocolate, vanilla and chocolate chip flavoured ice cream.

Before the staff that was serving her left, she softly grabbed his arm. He turned back and asked, “Is everything okay, Hye Sun?”

Her hands moved gracefully in sign language, ‘what’s happening, Baekhyun?’ A hand was placed on her head gently as Baekhyun smiled sweetly at how innocent his half sister looked right now.

“You’ll soon know after this at about sunset today,” He said, “Just go with the flow of game. Oh, And happy birthday, Hye Sun.” He clarified, then went back to continue his work, serving other customers in the shop.

Hye Sun turned her attention back towards the served ice cream in front of her. Her stomach began to rumble as she realized that she hasn’t eaten yet. Soon enough, every bowl of ice cream was finished.

She lifted the bowls into one another to help save some work for her brother. She noticed that a light blue letter was placed under one of the bowls. She picked it up and opened it.

Did you enjoy your meal, Hye Sun? I hope you did. I ordered all your favourite ice cream since I know that you had class all day and didn’t have any time to stop and have a break. Have a good meal at your half brother’s shop!

Now, back to the game. Head towards the park where you loved to play the old swing tire there :).

~R~

The tire swing looked the same as it was 10 years ago. It had been a while since she last played on the swing. She thought that it was long gone, but it was there. And she knew only one person who had the specific information of the tire swing.

As she walked closer, she noticed something on the tire. It was a small fluffy white teddy bear on it. The words ‘Kim Hye Sun’ were stitched onto it with blue thread. Underneath it was the same blue letter that she had received throughout the hunt.

Tada! It’s your old swing tire! I finally found it after searching for it high and low. I hope you like the teddy bear. Hurry on, it’s almost Sunset. Try and find me at the bridge here. I’ll be waiting.

By now, Hye Sun could guess who the sender of all the letters was. Fluttering feelings filled her heart as she thought of his sweet actions. All that she was worried of was that was she ready to face him after her disability was found out. Would he still accept her after this?

~R~

The clock struck 5 and Hye Sun was seen heading towards the bridge at the park. The Sun could be seen going down into the horizon. She paused for a second.

There, on the white brick bridge, was the person who started the hunt, Kim Jongdae. He wore a very suave black suit, his hair styled up, and the shining orange light from the coming Sunset adding to the perfection.

Hye Sun mustered her courage and slowly moved towards Jongdae. She stopped as the gap between them was about one meter.

Jongdae took three steps forward towards Hye Sun and just couldn’t keep his eyes off of Hye Sun. She looked beautiful, even with her simple brown winter coat and red scarf. He gazed tenderly into her eyes and gave a soft loving smile. A bouquet of beautiful white roses appeared as he took his hand from behind him and he gave it to her.

With shaky hands, Hye Sun slowly accepted the roses and smiled a little as she could not hide her joy. As she returned her Jongdae, she saw him motioning her hands in a familiar pattern.

‘Happy birthday, Kim Hye Sun.’ Jongdae was using sign language.

He took another step forward.

“Happy birthday, Kim Hye Sun. Did you enjoy the short hunt I made?” Jongdae asked slowly. Hye Sun nodded once, biting her lip to contain the smile that was trying to grow on her face.

‘You learned sign language just for this?’ Hye Sun gestured.

“No,” Jongdae replied. Hye Sun’s face lowered for a moment. “I learned this because of you.” Jongdae continued and bit his lip.

“Hye Sun ah. You have been a very special person to me ever since before we first met. I used to think that you were just a passing crush in my life. But as time passed and since the day you avoided me, I began to feel a feeling of emptiness in me. I missed you. It took me a second for me to realize that I… I… love you. I fell for you, Kim Hye Sun. This crazy stupid guy fell for you.”

Jongdae stopped for a moment as he noticed the tears welling in Hye Sun’s round eyes. He cupped her cheeks and felt a rush of panic in him.

“Are you okay, Hye Sun? I’m so sorry. I-”As he continued to talk, a small slender finger hushed him. He looked at Hye Sun.

With a tear streaming down her cheek, she mouthed slowly, ‘I love you too, you idiot.’ She gave him a small sweet smile and wrapped her arms around him. She lifted her head to look at Jongdae.

Jongdae slowly ducked his head and inched closer to her lips. He couldn’t help but smile at the joy of being with his ‘angel’. He closed his eyes to savor this moment of happiness in his memory.

Sparks flew as their lips touched gently. No other words could be described at how in love he was with her. He felt like the happiest man on Earth.

They slowly parted to catch their breath as they felt drops of small water falling. They looked up and falling from the pinkish twilight clouds was the first snow of the year. A snowflake slowly descended between them as they turned back to each other.

“Make a wish.” Jongdae softly said and slowly moved in. Before they lips met again, Jongdae asked, “Would you be my girlfriend?” Hye Sun closed the gap as Jongdae knew the answer and took that as a yes.
