Description

This is the story of your mother and I;

Your mother is humble, sweet and smart.

Your mother is terrifying, intimidating and witty.

Your mother is the best thing that has ever happened to me.

Like a favourite book, she is filled with unexpected qualities that I never thought I'd love. Our fates and destinies have twisted up so much that our lives are in such havoc, but through it all, your mother is still the one that I love. We've grown and loved each other through it all. Your mother is mine, forever and always.

Foreword

The tides have changed again, the wind blew strongly in his direction. The sounds of the waves crashing into the shore were calming, he takes his slippers off and digs his toes into the sand as he watches his wife and kids play in the water. His wife waves at him as she smiles widely, such a loving smile from such a loving person, his heart warms when he sees her scoop up their sons and daughter in her arms that were physically small but apparently big when it came to holding their children. What a peaceful life he's led so far. He smiles.

"Honey! I'm going to walk over there for a bit, okay?" he shouts.

His wife nods and gives him a thumbs up before laughing loudly at something their son had said. The sand under his toes was warm and soft, his footprints left dents on it. In the distance he sees a teenage girl sitting on a red bench, scribbling something into a small book with crumpled pieces of paper around her. He is happy to see the youth these days so interested in books and writing because he was one to preach about the greatness of sotry-telling, being a professor in a university and all. The amber glowing from the sunset gives a strong aura to all writers out there, he sighs as he focuses on the sun that seemed as if it was slowly submerging itself in the sea.

"Well, this marks the end of today." he whispers to himself.

Suddenly, something catches his eye, it was glinting, possibly a plastic bag. He grits his teeth, he couldn't stand the thought of pollution, he stomps towards the plastic bag and picks it up only to realise that it had something inside. He holds the bag with the tip of his fingers and studies it closely, it was transparent but it had something red and bulky inside. He flips it over and sees that it was a notebook with a Hello Kitty picture on the front. He frowns.

"A book?" he thought.

It was unbelievably heavy and big for a notebook. His interest piques and he takes the book out of the wet plastic bag. Thankfully, the notebook was wrapped in another cling plastic bag so it wasn't wet at all. He lokos closely and sees that there was something engraved on the back.

All the things I never got to tell you.

His fingers traced the engraving covered in cling wrap and so many questions start popping in his head. The engraving seemed to have been done with a blunt pencil and it by the looks of it, it was done by a male. But why would such masculine handwriting be on the back of a Hello Kitty notebook, of all things? He turns to look at the young girl with the small notebook on the red bench, but she wasn't there anymore. Could it have been hers? No, the girl was holding onto a black notebook and she couldn't have possibly thrown it into the sea without him noticing it, he was right infront of her.

"Sweetheart, I think we should head back before it get's dark!" he hears his wife's bright voice from behind him.

He turns and holds up the packaged book up, showing it to her wordlessly. Her eyebrows quirked up as she pressed her lips into a hard line. He knew what she was thinking, his wife had a very interesting mind. She was always interested in the supernatural and horror films were her number one picks during their movie dates. Her dream was to see a ghost but so far, she hasn't succeeded. So, naturally, when someone with such an interest sees something abnormal washed up ashore in their neighbourhood beach, they would want to have to every last bit of that something in their posession. Her eyes were already glinting with excitement and he smiles before ruffling her hair.

"Are we going to bring that home?" she asks, exhilarated.

He nods and she squeals. She asks if she could hold it and he nods again. She grabs it from him and runs away as he slowly went to gather their children. He sighs, knowing that it was going to be a sleepless night for the both of them tonight. When they got home, his wife left the, thankfully, sealed book on the coffee table by the side of her their bed. They washed the kids up together and put them to sleep quickly.

"Let's go, let's go!" the wife cheers softly.

He laughs as he takes her hand and follows her into their bedroom. They showered and changed into their pyjamas before curling up in bed together. She had her back against his chest and his head was resting on top of hers, his arms were stretched out as he slowly unwrapped the transparent cling wrap. When he feels the texture of the notebook with his fingers, the hairs on the back of his neck stood straight up. It did have a supernatural feel about it. His wife looks closely at the notebook and reaches out to touch it as well. He feels her flinch in his arms as well. The notebook delivered something, not physically, but it was something electric, almost magical. He gulps as he opens the book slowly, knowing that his wife was feeling as nervous as he was. Suddenly, a piece of paper falls out and his wife catches it quickly.

"A note, a note, read it babe." he says.

His wife opens the note and sees that it's slightly yellowed and the handwriting was the same from the engraving on the back, but it was all in Korean. Both of them frowned at the same time.

"You can read this right? You're half Korean." he says.

"Yeah, but I don't really understand the dialect." she answers.

"Come on, try!"

She nods slowly as her fingers traced the words gently, it was like she was scared that the letters were going to fall out of the paper and all the words would scatter everywhere. He hears her clear .

Hello, my dear children,

I have given up. I cannot do this anymore, my heart aches. I am sending this book off into the sea, where it will find it's way to you, slowly but surely. I don't think any of you will recognise me anymore, I don't think any of you remember anymore. I know, I don't exist even in your dreams. But all of you exist in mine and I miss all of you so so so much. Now that I am old and withering, I am not strong enough to continue searching. I am sorry, but I hope all of you don't take it as a form of giving up, I am still trying my best.

I am tired, I am so tired. My bones are rickety and my heart is weak. I am so tired.

I am setting this book free, along with my wish of reuniting with you, my dear children. Please, I beg of you, please come find me, even if I am already dead and my flesh has decomposed. Even if it takes that long, please come and find me. I am so sad to do this, but I don't have the energy and the strength from my younger and more vigourous days to continue. My tears and this pen I am writing with bear witness to what I am feeling right now. I miss all of you so much.

I don't know how to end this letter... I never thought this day would come, this day where I realise I am no longer fit enough to go on with this life-long search. I am crying so much more. I miss all of you so much.

I hope this book falls into the right hands, I still haven't lost hope despite my worsening health.

Please... Please, don't ever forget me...

Your father,

Woo Jiho

JUNE 2044

The both of them stay quiet for a long time.

"Well?" the wife asks.

"Well, are we the right hands for this book?" the husband answers.

"I don't know, I honestly am not sure about this..."

"It came all the way from Korea and it's ended up with us, what do you think of that?"

"I think it's magical."

"Me too."

"So, we keep it? We read on?"

"Yes, yes definately. We are the hands that received this book, we can't possibly throw it back into the sea."

"Okay, this will be good for me to improve on my Korean," she laughs softly.

"Yes it will." he chuckles as he opens the first page of the Hello Kitty notebook.
