Underworld
Description
I've been thinking this baby up since a few weeks ago, and hopefully I get to actually complete it soon! It's a fic inspired by VIXX's VOODOO music video, a sequel of sorts to what happens after the boys manage to escape from the evil witch lady's clutches. It has a (Greek mythology!) twist, of course: it's set in the Underworld, and Hongbin is its new king! If you haven't noticed, its plot is heavily borrowed from the myth of Hades and Persephone. c:
So yes, here goes nothing!
Much too young and much too beautiful to remain trapped in such a dismal place such as this. Away from everything she knows and loves, all she seeks is her freedom, but the charms of the mysterious Underworld may prove too hard to resist--and not to mention the handsome, but lonely lord who rules it.
It's difficult not to fear him. Stern with the rules of the realm he controls, the Shadow King rarely drops a hint of joy or happiness. Stricken by a painful past, he holds secrets only the closest of his comrades know of. One day, he decides he cannot rule alone and takes an unsuspecting girl from the upperworld, in hopes he could win her over to be his queen.
Joyous, warm, and always smiling, Sanghyuk is a fierce and loyal friend to his lord, the Shadow King. He waits on the queen-to-be and hopes to help her adjust to the dreariness of the Underworld.
A modern day Charon, Taekwoon serves as the ferryman of the Shadow Realm, escorting the dead into the Underworld. He doesn't speak much, but shows deep care for the king, despite being suspicious of the girl he's abruptly taken.
Sanghyuk says he was once a happy person, until he was forcefully dragged into the Shadow Realm by its former queen. Hakyeon serves the Underworld as the messenger, the middle ground between it and the upperworld. He is sarcastic and dry most of the time, but like Taekwoon, he cares much for the king and his well-being.
Before Hongbin ruled, he'd overthrown the former queen of the realm. Hers is a story kept vitally secret in the Underworld, never to be spoken of unless needed.
Foreword
"Please," a deep, soothing voice murmured. "Please. Remember."
And that was when your eyes flew open to what probably was the biggest shock of your entire life.
You don't quite remember how you've gotten there.
All you know is that you're lying awake in a dark, but majestic room built with the finest gems, decked with polished obsidian furnishings. The more closely you observed, you begin to notice hints of ivory accessories hanging neatly all around you, before you take sight of the brilliant crystal chandelier that lit the suite's high ceilings.
You run your hands through the red velvet blankets on the bed--unlike any sort of cloth you've ever felt before.
Was it all a dream? A hallucination?
This wasn't your room, nor were these luxuries your things. What exactly had been going on?
As if the questions floating in your mind were about to be answered, a knock sounded on the doors. You push yourself farther back until pressed onto the bed's headboard, the covers held to your chin and twisted into your hands.
The doors slowly open, only to reveal a tall young man in a poorly done-up suit. He grins as he holds a tray in his hands. While the boy walks toward you, you involuntarily flinch backward. He notices this and chuckles.
"Don't worry," he says calmly. His voice, though deep, was not the same as the one you'd heard earlier. "I come in peace. And with food."
You crane your neck at the smell of the food he's brought--freshly baked bread, cheese, and poached eggs. You see some fruit on the side as well.
The boy smiles and walks toward the small coffee table beside your bed. He places the tray of food on it and bows before turning away from you and strolling to the doors once again.
"W-Where am I?" you blurt, afraid and confused at everything that was happening. You definitely weren't used to being treated like royalty and this most definitely did not seem like a place on the very world you lived in. "And who are you? Is this just dream?"
The smile does not disappear from the boy's face, but he sighs.
"My name is Sanghyuk. But you can call me Hyuk, if you like," he answers. "I am to wait on you, my lady, as the master has instructed me to do so."
"Wait, wait, my lady?"
But Hyuk ignores this and answers your first question.
"You are in the Realm of Shadows, my lady. But humans most commonly call it the Underworld," he tells you. The smile from his lips fade a bit, and almost regretfully, he continues. "And I am very sorry, but this is not a dream."
